4. Describe the advance organizers, specifically on how the words are related to each
other.
The advance organizer used in the figure above is a graphic organizer. Hierarchy map
type of graphic organizer. The words are completely organize because it shows on the
figure above how they are related to each other and each topic leads to another new
information and there still have connection to the previous topic just like in the first line
that connects to the first boxes. And for the second and third line that connects to the
second and third boxes, the words related to each other because it shows on the figure
above what is asked in the box and it clearly shows there the answer in the following
boxes.
1. Why was the advance organizer presented before the discussion of the topic?.
It presented before the discussion of the topic because, You will find it easier to
connect new information with what you already know about the topic, and you can readily see
how the concepts in a certain topic are related to each other.
Advance organizers help the students in understanding the new information about the topic.
Also it helps to link the new learning to the existing scheme. As such, advance organizers
facilitate learning by helping to organize and strengthen the cognitive structure
• Story map - used to identify the different elements such as characters, character
plots, themes, techniques, etc. in a book students are reading. It’s a useful tool that
teachers can integrate into the lesson to improve students’ comprehension.
• Biography graphic organizer - a tool that assists with understanding a character from
a novel, autobiography or movie or a historical figure more in-depth. It brings
attention to various important factors about a person’s life.
• KWL chart - used for gathering information from student’s prior knowledge or
experience. This 3 column chart captures the before (what the reader already knows),
during (what the reader wants to learn) and after (what the reader learned) stages of
reading.
• Learning map - visually depict the key takeaways – skills, ideas, knowledge – students
should get from a lesson. It usually provides a high-level view of the lesson/ unit/
course that is to be studied and the connection between its different components.
Students can also use learning maps in the classroom for note-taking.
• Analogy graphic organizer - uses analogy to help students identify similarities and
differences between a new topic and a topic that they are already familiar with. •
Vocabulary graphic organizer - used to assess the vocabulary knowledge of students.
You can create graphic organizers including various elements to help students
learn new words, and learn antonyms and synonyms.
• Cause and effect graphic organizer - shows the causes and effects of an event. The
cause is the reason why something has happened, and effect is the result of what has
happened. Visualization helps clearly understand the different cause and effect
relationships.
• Mind map - a tool that helps capture the free flow of thought and is widely used for
brainstorming around topics. Additionally, it can also be used to organize and group
information about a topic.
Ausubel’s subsumption theory, focuses on how the individual or a learner absorbs new
information by tying it to existing concepts and ideas that they have already acquired. They
learn more when it connects the ideas and information that needed to their previous
experience. For him, it’s easy to catch up the new information of the topic when it uses a
material from verbal/ textual presentations like advance organizers that serves as a learning
tools.
2. Choose a topic related to your field of specialization, obtain a material such as a
book chapter about this topic and advance organizer about it.

Skimming
• Skimming – is done by looking over the new material to gain a basic overview.
• Graphic organizer – visuals to set up or outline the new information. This may include
pictographs, descriptive patterns, concept patterns, concept maps
From the Module on Ausubel’s theory, we realized that advance organizers that
presented before the discussion are really important. Because, it will find easier to
connect new information with what you already know about the topic, and it can
readily see how the concepts in a certain topic are related to each other. We also
realize that this advance organizers help the students in understanding the new
information about the topic. Also it helps to link the new learning to the existing
scheme. As such, advance organizers facilitate learning by helping to organize and
strengthen the cognitive structure. We appreciate the importance of this theory
especially to us as a student. And we learned the four types of advance graphic
organizers and their uses. Also the knowledge of Ausubel’s theory is hierarchically
organized. And through the use of a graphic organizers, a visual means one’s can be
able to processed any information or ideas in an easy manner.
