Open Ended Lab Assignment

This document provides instructions for an open-ended lab assignment for a Civil Engineering Materials course. Students are asked to conduct research at building material stores to obtain rates and characteristics of materials like sand, cement, and bricks. They must analyze this data to determine the appropriate concrete-to-brick (C/B) ratio for a two-story building project. Students must generate a technical report with their conclusions and recommendations on whether the materials should be used. They will complete the assignment as a group and be evaluated on literature review, methodology, data analysis, conclusions, procedural skills, safety procedures, equipment use, and attitude during the experiment.

National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences, Lahore Campus

Course Name: Civil Engineering Materials Lab Course Code: VL-1001

Program: BS(Civil Engineering) Semester: Fall 2022
Assigning date 04/10/2022 Total Marks: 20
Submission Date: 20/11/2022 Weight 20 %
Exam Type: Open Ended Lab Assignment

Instruction/Notes:  Please perform literature review to get understanding of specifications and

procedure to find the solution.
 Final submission should be in form of a Technical report.
 No submission will be accepted after due date.

Problem Statement:

Assume that you are hired as an Engineer by the client. The client wants to construct a two two-story
building and right now he is at the rate analysis stage. The client asks the suggestion about the type of
construction (i.e Brick masonry, or concrete masonry in the context of C/B ratio. You are required to go at
different sale stores and ask about the rate and characteristics of different construction materials i.e., sand,
cement, and bricks for the construction building, which is going to be constructed. Being an Engineer you
are required to validate those characteristics and analyze of C/B ratio. To obtain good marks, you need to
follow the standard procedure and given instructions.
In addition, generate a report (Technical report), containing your conclusions and recommendations that
whether this material should be used or not, the recorded interview of the sale manager is required.
The details of the OEL are mentioned as follows:

1. A list of group members has been provided.

2. During the psychomotor and affective skills evaluation of the OEL, the groups are required to perform the
experiments. The experiments will be performed as a group and all members of the group have to work
together as a team to complete the task within the specified time frame.

3. It is totally up to the members of the group, how they plan and select their experiments and how they
divide their work among themselves. Be very careful while selecting data because the group members will
have to defend it with technical reasoning, in their viva as well as in the OEL report.

4. A format/template of the OEL report has been provided.
