02 - Slide 3. Overview of RAMI 4.0 - r7

The document provides an overview of the Reference Architecture Model for Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0). It discusses the need for reference architectures when building complex systems. It then explains what Industry 4.0 is, what is driving it, and some of the founding members in Germany working on platforms for Industry 4.0. The RAMI 4.0 architecture is presented, showing how it is structured along different layers and hierarchy levels based on standards like ISA-95 and ISA-88. Examples are given of how it can be used to integrate processes and increase productivity across the supply chain. Assets that could be connected in Industry 4.0 solutions are also discussed.

What is “Industrie 4.0” ?

The Industrie 4.0 Platform (2013) Steering Committee define :

The term Industrie 4.0 stands for the fourth industrial

revolution, a new level of organizing and controlling the
entire value chain across product lifecycles.

This cycle focuses on increasingly personalized customer

wishes and extends from the concept to the order,
development, production, and shipping of a product
to the end customer and ultimately to its recycling,
including all associated services.

What is driving Industrie 4.0 ?

• Originates from a project in the high-tech strategy of the German

government, which promotes the computerization of manufacturing

• In October 2012 the Working Group on Industry 4.0 presented a set

of Industry 4.0 implementation recommendations to the German
federal government

• The Platform Industrie 4.0 was officially announced at the Hanover

Fair 2013. The platform is steered and led by the Federal Minister for
Economic Affairs and Energy, Germany

Productivity along the Value Stream
A “type” becomes “instance” when design and prototyping have been completed and the actual
product is being manufactured, it has to go through its own life cycle within the value streams.
