ICT - COMPUTER SYSTEM SERVICING

Learning Competencies (Essential Competencies)

LO1. Plan and prepare for tasks to be undertaken (TLE_IACSS9-12UHT-IIIa-17)

Objectives

A. Content Standard: The learners demonstrate an understanding of the use of

hand tools and equipment for computer systems servicing.

B. Performance Standard: The learners shall be able to use hand tools and

equipment for computer systems servicing.

C. Learning Objectives:

1. Identify tasks to be undertaken properly.

2. Identify hand tools according to the task.
3. Select appropriate hand tools according to the task.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

PROPER TOOL SELECTION

A tool is a hand-held device that aids us in accomplishing a task. It can be regarded

as an extension of the human hand hence increasing speed and accuracy. Tools can be

classified according to their uses or functions.

Preparing for the task to be undertaken includes proper tool selection.

1. How do you select the best tool for the job? First, know and understand in detail the

scope of work to be accomplished. Second, plan for the scope taking into account the

sequence of tasks.
2. Selecting the best tool for each task requires training in the proper use of the tools,

field experience in their safe use, and following the manufacturer’s guidance and

instructions for that specific tool.

3. When obtaining the tool, all the associated tooling and consumable parts, as

recommended by the manufacturer must be included. In addition, related

consumable parts must also be selected and used according to their manufacturer’s

instructions.

Safe Use of tools

Once selected, use the tool for the purpose for which it was designed. Not all tools

come with detailed instructions, but there are those that do spell out the safety Do’s and Don’ts

for your safety. If there are set-up/use options, operator judgment must always be based on

what is the safest way to use the tool. Skilled use of tools and software makes the job less

difficult and ensures that tasks are performed properly and safely.

Environmental Safety and Health Program requires the following:

1. Use the right tool for the job.

2. All tools must be kept in good condition with regular maintenance.

3. Each tool should be examined before use. If you notice damaged or defective tools, do not

use it anymore.

4. Tools must be operated according to manufacturer’s instructions.

5. Use the right protective equipment for the tool and activity.

HARDWARE TOOLS

As mentioned earlier, tools can be classified according to their uses or functions and repair is a

good example. It is very important for you as a future computer technician, to know that for
every job there is the right tool. Make sure that you are familiar with the correct use of each tool

and that the correct tool is used for the current task. In line with this, you also need to have a

complete set of tools designed for a particular purpose known as toolkit.

Hardware tools are grouped into these four (4) categories namely: Electro-Static Discharge

(ESD) tools, Hand tools, Cleaning tools and Diagnostic tools.

Electro-Static Discharge Tools

Electro-Static Discharge is the sudden flow of electricity between two electrically charged

objects caused by friction on carpets, tile flooring, clothing, hair, fabric,

and etc. There are two ESD tools: the anti-static wrist strap and the anti-static mat.

The anti-static wrist strap protects the computer equipment when grounded to a computer

chassis. It prevents ESD from damaging the computer equipment. On the other hand, we use

the anti-static mat to stand on or place hardware on to prevent

static electricity from building up.

Hand Tools

Most tools we use in computer repair and assembly are small hand tools. They are part of a

computer repair toolkit. It offers a selection of different hand tools which are supplied in a tool

box or a tool bag. Some common hand tools and their uses are:
Philips head screwdriver
• used to loosen or tighten crosshead screws.

Flat head screwdriver

• used to loosen or tighten slotted screws.

Torx screwdriver
• used to loosen or tighten screws that have a star-like
depression on the top, a feature that is mainly found
on laptop.

Hex driver
• sometimes called a nut driver, is used to tighten nuts
in the same way that a screwdriver tightens screws.

Needle-nose plier
• used to hold small parts.

Wire cutter
• used to strip and cut wires.

Tweezers
• used to manipulate small parts.

Parts Retriever
• used to retrieve parts from location that are too small
for your hand to fit.

Flashlight
• used to light up areas that you cannot see well.
Crimping tool
• used to conjoin two pieces of metal by deforming one
or both of them in a way that causes them to hold
each other. The result of the tool's work is called
a crimp.

Cleaning Tools

Having the appropriate cleaning tools is essential when maintaining and repairing computers.

Using the appropriate cleaning tools helps ensure that computer components are not damaged

during cleaning. Cleaning tools include the following:

Lint-free cloth
• used to clean different computer components without
scratching or leaving debris.

Compressed air
• used to blow away dust and debris from different
computer parts without touching the components.

Cable ties
• used to bundle cables neatly inside and outside of a
computer.

Parts organizer
• used to hold screw, jumpers, fasteners and other
small parts and prevents them from getting mixed
together.
Diagnostic Tools

Diagnostic tools are used to test and diagnose equipment. Diagnostic tools include the

following:
Multimeter / Multitester
• is a device that can take many types of measurements.
It tests the integrity of circuits and the quality of
electricity in computer components. It has 2 types:
analog and digital.

Loop-back adapter
• used to test the functionality of computer ports.

Network Cable Tester

• or LAN tester, is a device designed to measure and test

existing LAN connection.
