Leonardo da Vinci

Who exactly is Leonardo da Vinci: Leonardo da Vinci (April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519) was an
Italian Renaissance painter and polymath who achieved legendary fame and iconic status
within his own lifetime. His renown primarily rests upon his brilliant achievements as a
painter, the Mona Lisa, and the Last Supper.
Early Life:
Birth and Name - Da Vinci was born on 14 or 15 April 1452 in the town of Vinci, which was
situated in the lower valley of the Arno river in the territory of the Medici-ruled Republic of Florence.
Leonardo’s parents were not married. His father, Ser Piero, was a wealthy Florentine lawyer and
his mother, Caterina, was a young peasant girl. He spent his early years with his mother but then
lived in the household of his father, grandparents, and uncle. His father went on to marry four
times! Considering that Leonardo did not have a surname, since da Vinci simply means "of Vinci."
So theoretically his name would be Leonardo of Vinci.

Early Years - Leonardo obviously had an amazing mind but believe it or not he never went to
school! Instead, he was taught reading, writing and math’s at home.

Verrocchio's Workshop - In the mid-1460s, when Leonardo was 14 years old, his family moved to
Florence, where he became a studio boy in the workshop of Verrocchio, who, at his time, was the
leading Florentine sculptor and painter. By the age of 17, Leonardo became an apprentice and
remained in training for seven years. Other famous painters who apprenticed in the workshop or
associated it include Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, Perugino, and Lorenzo di Credi. Leonardo was
introduced to both modern training and a wide range of technical skills, such as chemistry,
drafting, metallurgy, plaster casting, metalworking, leatherworking, woodwork, and mechanics, as
well as artistic skills of sculpting, painting, drawing, and modeling.

Career:

First piece of art - In 1478 Da Vinci received one of his first independent commissions to paint an
altarpiece for the Chapel of St. Bernard. In 1481 Leonardo received a commission from the monks
of San Donato in Scopeto for The Adoration of the Magi. Both, initial commissions were abandoned
by an artist without finishing it when he went to offer his services to Duke of Milan Ludovico Sforza.
Da Vinci worked in Milan from 1482 to 1499, where he was commissioned to paint the Virgin of the
Rocks for the Confraternity of the Immaculate Conception and The Last Supper for the monastery of
Santa Maria Delle Grazie. On behalf of Sforza, Leonardo traveled to Hungary, where King Matthias
Corvinus, commissioned him to paint a Madonna.

Late Years - In 1519 Leonardo died at Clos Luce at the age of 67. One of the most popular theories
regarding the cause of his death is a stroke. Vasari describes that Leonardo lamented on his
deathbed, full of repentance that he had offended against God by failing to practice his art as he
should have. Vasari also states that on his last day, Leonardo sent for the priest to make his
confession and to receive the Holy Sacrament.

Three Most Famous art pieces - Mona Lisa (c. 1503–19), Last Supper (c. 1495–98), Self Portrait
(c. 1490/1515–16)
