Each Life Raft Must Contain A Few Items
1. Survival kit that is equipped with items such as pure water, sea water desalination kit, first
aid kit, survival booklet, police whistle, raft repair kit, raft knife, bucket for bailing water,
signalling mirrors, another means of inflation and an illumination device.
2. Sea Anchor
3. Radar reflector
4. A canopy for protection from weather extremities
5. Approved Survivor locator light
6. Approved Visual signalling device
Inspection of the raft would be in accordance with the relevant maintenance practices. The raft
would be inflated by its regular means and would be checked for any rips, tears or any physical
evidence that would cause deflation. The life raft would also be checked for an expiration date. The
inflation gas cylinder would be inspected to ensure that it has sufficient gas as well as the physical
condition of the gas cylinder would be checked for any dents or leaks. The canopy would also be
checked to ensure that it has all the relevant parts necessary for usage and the condition of the
canopy would also be noted, looking for any damages, rips, or tears. The contents of the survival kit
would be inspected for any items that contain expirations dates. If any items are found that are close
to the expiration dates, the items would be replaced with new items. The items within the survival
kit that do not have expiration dates would be also inspected to insure it is in good working
condition. All other devices that are related to the raft would be inspected and checked with the
relevant checks in accordance with the maintenance procedures. The raft would be deflated and
repacked and placed in its respective place within the aircraft.
Maintenance Checks
The maintenance manual for the hoist from the manufacturer would be consulted and conformed to
for any checks and maintenance that needs to be done to the hoist. The hooks on the hoist would be
inspected for any dirt or other foreign debris that can contribute to corrosion and it would be
cleaned. It will also be inspected for any visible wear. The cable would be inspected for any fraying
or cable breakage that may have taken place. The drum would also be inspected for any wear from
the cable being wound and unwound. If it is an electric hoist, the motor would be inspected to
ensure that is it free from dust and debris that may hamper its cooling. Inspect the electrical
connections to ensure it is in good condition and that no wires are exposed. Ensure that the
alignment of the cable on the drum is as should be and that there are no crossings that would
hamper the movement when it is used next. Inspect the cable cutter to ensure it is in good
condition. If inspection is to be done on a hydraulically operated hoist, the hydraulic motor would be
inspected for any signs of leaking hydraulic fluid. All hydraulic lines would also be inspected for any
dents, kinks or leaks.
Ensure that the hook and cable moves up and down when instructed by the control unit for the
hoist. When extending and retracting the hoist with the controls, ensure that there is proper
alignment of cables and that the drum rotates freely. Attach different weights to the hook and
ensure that the winding mechanism wounds the cable evenly and smoothly each time. Ensure that
both the primary and back-up controls work as expected. Ensure that the speed of the cable being
wound operates at its approximate range of operation. Ensure that when the system is enabled that
the indicator in the cockpit shows that. Ensure that the control panels in the cargo area can change
the speed that the hoist operates using the thumbwheel. There is a cable payout display that shows
the length of the extended hoist, ensure that the readings are correct. There is also an indicator in
the cockpit which indicates if the motor becomes hot, ensure that that indicator light does not come
on and if it does, follow the procedure in the manual for checking the motor.
Test the hoist by controlling it to be moved up and down and ensure that the hydraulic gauge for the
hoist remains at a constant pressure or within the acceptable range.
