Management Science

The document contains a quiz with multiple choice and problem solving questions related to linear programming concepts. Problem 1 provides data on two products and three production departments, and asks to formulate the linear program, find the optimal solution graphically, and calculate related values. Problem 2 modifies the data, reducing resources and profit, and asks similar questions. The optimal solution to Problem 1 is to produce 150 units of Product X and 500 of Product Y, for total profit of $7,400. The optimal solution to Problem 2 with reduced resources is 150 units of Product X and 500 of Product Y, for total profit of $3,700.

Part III: Problem
Problem 1:
There are two types of products that Seven-Evelyn would produce: Product X and Product Y. In
producing the product, there are 3 departments involved: packaging, sewing and finishing. In terms of
resources, each department has respectively 200, 1,800 and 600 hours available. The time required for the
production of the product and the corresponding profit contribution are provided below:
Product X:
Sewing -------- 3
Packaging -------- 1/2
Finishing -------- 2/3
Price/Unit -------- 20
Profit Contribution – 16
Product Y:
Sewing -------- 2
Packaging -------- 1/4
Finishing -------- 1
Price/Unit -------- 30
Profit Contribution – 10
Under the assumption that the entity wants to maximize total profit contribution, you are required to answer
the following questions:
a. What is the linear programing model for this problem?
b. Find the optimal solution using the graphical solution procedure. How many products of each type
should Seven-Evelyn produce?
c. Based from the above question, determine the total profit contribution.
d. How many hours of production time will be scheduled in each department?
e. What is the slack time in each department?
Problem 1 - Answer:
A. Max 16X + 10Y
s.t.,
3X+2Y ≤ 1,800 - sewing
½X + ¼Y ≤ 200 - Packaging
2/3X + 1Y ≤ 600 - Finishing
X, Y ≥ 0

0 100 200 300 400 500 600 700 800 900 1000

Sewing
Packaging
Finishing
2/3X + 1Y ≤ 600 – Finishing
½X + ¼Y ≤ 200 – Packaging
2/3X – 2/3X + 1Y = 600 – 2/3X
Y = 600 – 2/3X
Substitute the value of Y to the 2 nd equation

1/2X + 1/4Y = 200

1/2X + ¼ (600 – 2/3X) = 200

1/2X + 150 – 1/6X = 200

3/6X-1/6X = 200 – 150

2/6X = 50

X = 50 * 6/2

X = 150

Substitute the value of X to the 2nd equation

1/2X + 1/4Y = 200

½(150) + 1/4Y = 200

75 + 1/4Y = 200

1/4Y = 200 – 75

1/4Y = 125

Y = 125 * 4/1

Y = 500

C.
Total Profit Contribution:
16X+10Y
16(150) + 10 (500)
2,400 + 5,000 = 7,400

.D.
3X+2Y ≤ 1,800 – sewing
3(150) + 2(500)
450 + 1,000 = 1,450
½X + ¼Y ≤ 200 – Packaging
1/2X + 1/4Y
½(150) + ¼(500)
75 + 125 = 200
2/3X + 1Y ≤ 600 - Finishing
2/3(150) + 1(500)
100 + 500 = 600

Packaging 200 200 0
Sewing 1,800 1,450 350
Finishing 600 600 0
Problem 2:
Based from the given data in the 1st problem, assuming the economic situation worsen and the entity
opted to reduce the number of employees which resulted to a half reduction of the resources (time available)
from all departments, also the entity invested machineries which consequently reduces the production hours into
half. Due to the aforementioned changes, the profit contribution of both products is affected: Product X- from
16 to 8; Product Y- from 10 to 5.
Assuming the entity opted to maximize total profit contribution, answer the required questions below:

Problem 2 – Answer:
A. Max 8x + 5y
St.
1.5X+1Y ≤ 900 - sewing
1/4X + 1/8Y ≤ 100 - Packaging
1/3X + 1/2Y ≤ 300 – Finishing
X, Y ≥ 0
B.
Sewing
Packaging
Finishing

1/3X + 1/2Y ≤ 300 – Finishing

1/4X + 1/8Y ≤ 100 – Packaging

1/3X – 1/3X + 1/2Y = 300 – 1/3X

1/2Y = 300 – 1/3X
2/1 * 1/2Y = 300 * 2/1 – 1/3X * 2/1
Y = 600 – 2/3X
Substitute the value of Y to the other equation
1/4X + 1/8Y ≤ 100
1/4X + 1/8 (600 – 2/3X) = 100
1/4X + 75 – 1/12X = 100
1/6X = 25
X = 150
Substitute the value of X to find the value of Y:
1/4X + 1/8Y ≤ 100
1/4 (150) + 1/8Y = 100
37.5 + 1/8Y = 100
1/8Y = 100 – 37.5
1/8Y = 62.5
8/1 * 1/8 Y = 62.5 * 8/1
Y = 500
C. 8X + 5Y
8(150) + 5(500)
1,200 + 2,500 = 3,700

D.
1.5X+1Y ≤ 900 – sewing
1.5(150) + 1(500) = 725 hours

1/4X + 1/8Y ≤ 100 – Packaging

1/4 (150) + 1/8(500) = 100

1/3X + 1/2Y ≤ 300 – Finishing

1/3(150) + 1/2 (500) = 300
