What did you learn? Why? Websites, apps and other online resources did you use?

* American Sign Language (ASL) * went through host of websites & YouTube videos
* main source of learning was “Learn ASL in 31 days”; felt
* wanted to learn a new language this was most structured
* different, interesting and can help people with * referenced other videos & websites with useful &
disabilities in a practical way practical everyday phrases

* with given time-frame => possible to at least make

some headway in two weeks.

Time spent? Family support you in your learning?

15-20 minutes a day for 2 weeks * enjoyed this project because family could participate

Tried to do 2 videos a day, each approx.. 5 minutes * researched various websites together to see which
ones were better to use
* took some pictures/videos of the learning process
* learnt some of the sign language together & we
conversed in ASL; they would also help each other when
the other got the sign wrong
Hurdles faced and how you overcame them (1) Hurdles faced and how you overcame them (3)
* finding guidelines or instructions that sets out how to * sometimes there are a few different ways of saying the
systematically learn ASL e.g. which words/phrases to same thing
learn first, do you learn the alphabet first etc.
=> looked at other references & chose more commonly
=> end up deciding to structure the learning ourselves; used one
took practical learning approach and learnt useful
phrases and used website that I felt was structured in the
most systematic way NOW I WILL SHOW YOU A QUICK VIDEO OF ME
LEARNING ASL ONLINE

Hurdles faced and how you overcame them (2) Afterwords

* most sites/videos DIDN’T have sound! Although I know * Overall, I enjoyed the whole learning process, from
ASL is for deaf people, but I had expected that there initiation to the end
would be verbal instructions along with the video to tell
* couldn’t learn the WHOLE complete ASL and know it
you how to place your fingers, hands etc as they were
fluently, given the limited time & difficulty, but I felt I made
shown; also the actions were all done very quickly/no
some progress
pauses; hard to follow
* although it was a bit tricky, but it was easier than I had
=> ended up taking notes/log of some of the signs;
envisioned at the beginning
reviewed it/played back a few times; whole learning
process took longer than anticipated * I feel satisfied that I learnt something new and useful
