Evidence Based Medicine-Rolfe's Reflective Model What?
Evidence Based Medicine-Rolfe's Reflective Model What?
What?
Evidence based medicine can be defined as using the best evidence in making decisions about
the care of individual patients. (Masic et al 2008) Evidence based medicine combines the best
available research data with clinical experience, patient values, and other factors. The objective
of EBM is to apply high-quality clinical research more frequently when making healthcare
decisions. EBM demands the clinician to develop new skills, such as effective literature searches
and the use of explicit criteria of evidence when assessing the clinical literature.
So what?
Every day, medical knowledge advances to the point that previously held beliefs quickly become
outdated and keeping up with this boom of scientific knowledge seems unattainable. EBM
advises you to focus your reading on topics relating to your patient’s particular problems. A
more effective strategy to stay up to date with the literature is to develop clinical queries and
then explore current databases. Therefore, you are using the literature to benefit both the patient
while also expanding your own base of knowledge. Ultimately, as a health care professional you
should be able to possess the ability to locate data from scientific research that is relevant to your
patient. Then, you must understand the studies and be able to evaluate them. There are going to
be many studies relevant to your patient but you must be able to differentiate between a good and
bad quality study. Finally, you must use those findings to guide you with your patient decision-
making. It is always important to consider the patient’s personal needs, their goals and values
when making any decision to do with your patient.
What next?
From learning about evidence based medicine I now know how important it is to always put your
patient first. As a physiotherapy student I am often urged to treat and care patients with evidence
based practices. I am now eager to be aware and up to date on any research or procedures being
done in my area of expertise. In working in healthcare I know there will always be continuous
research being done to improve our system however, to be able to provide a service of best
practice I must be aware of an article's limitations, to properly evaluate it critically, and to select
a treatment that is suitable for my patient. I also now know that not only should I just take the
research into account but the patient’s individual case should be prioritized. Ultimately my own
experience, my professional opinion and my patient’s rights, views and goals will help me for
my future decision making in practice.
