The Philippines is an archipelago, thus in each town/ region there are various beliefs and traditions
that are passed on and until now these traditions are practiced and remembered until now. Folk
songs mirrored the rich culture of Filipinos.

What is It

Let’s Learn
Vocal music is a genre performed by one or more singers with or without instrumental
accompaniment where singing provides the main focus. It features sung words called lyrics.
Folk song it is also known an indigenous or traditional music, which uses simple melodies. It
shows a specific topic that has a short and simple theme that conveys the people’s emotions, thoughts
and ideas.
Folk song reflect the everyday activities of the people that focus on love, work, nature and
children.

Folk songs are also traditionally passed on orally. Most Philippine folk songs have Spanish
and other Western influences. The people created melodic chants and indigenous instruments
based on the materials available where they lived.
The folk songs of Luzon Lowlands are performed in his/her native language such as Ilocano,
Pangasinense, Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bicolano and others. What are the characteristics of folk
songs?

• Originally passed down orally to the family and to the other members of the community.
• Learned through rote.
• Sung in his/ her own dialect.
• Begins in one key and ends in the same key
• Composers and lyricists are usually unknown.
• Mood can be sentimental, playful and humorous.
• Concepts are based on nature of people’s work, tradition, culture
• Short and simple
• Either in duple meter 2, triple meter 3, or quadruple meter 4
