Vertical living is an innovative vision

for the future of our metropolises. The
units of vertical living must have the
potential to bring the inhabitants clos-
er together. Design intends to blend
in nature into the apartment. Break-
ing the volume into different blocks to
take advantage of south-west winds.
Using indirect sunlight from north-
ern side. To create shading for rec-
reational area using building volume.
Creating common terrace on each
floor. Double heights, Balconies & ter-
races to break the volume. Inculcat-
ing green spaces within the building.

Le Cheile is a residence designed for a joint

family in theurban area of Ernakulam. The
house is designed with an affinity to tropical
modernism. The oriention along the tradi-
tional direction of pray gives the maximum
utilisation of prevailing winds.

The open plan concept has brought in mul-

tifunctional spaces as well as integrated
landscapes as a part of built space. The sol-
id void relationship has created a major el-
ement contributing to the functionality and
aesthetics.

A boutique is a space where dreams about clothing gets trans-
lated into reality. Vast varie ty of patterns, textures, materials &
colours be comes the part of boutique everyday. It is important
to create a spacewhere workers & the clients becomes con-
nected to exchange their design ideas. The space must have the
potential to welcome any shades of colours to co-exist with it.

MAPPING REPORT
INTRODUCTION

As a part of Professional skill enhancement, mapping of Mattanchery based

on different parameters was done on 20th July 2022 by a group of ten stu-
dent architects.

LIGHTING
- The lighting parameter was found to be brightly lit at most of the areas.
- Most of the areas have many lamp posts at about 7m distance.
- There are a few spots with just enough lighting.
RECOMMENDATIONS
- There is more than enough lighting in the area.
- The areas with ‘enough’ lighting could use some extra lighting.

OPENNESS
- parameter was found to be mostly open.
- Most of the main roads are straight and have a good 360o view.
RECOMMENDATIONS
- Curved mirrors can be installed at junctions.

VISIBILITY
- The main streets have a number of shops hence it is visible
- Areas adjacent to Gujarati street are more visible
- The less visible areas are mostly the narrow lanes
- Majority of the areas are visible

PEOPLE
- A number of shops and street vendors can be found in Mattancherry, as a
result most of the places have a minimum number of people through out
- That being the case places are either crowded or with a minimum number of
people
- Due to the presence of people we feel secured but crowding of people may
cause discomfort

SECURITY
- Most of the areas lack security guards or Police station nearby.
RECOMMENDATIONS
- The survey shows lack of security in many parts of Mattancherry, so it is vital
to increase availability of securities in that area.
- Increase police patrolling in this area and take measures to improve women

18 MAPPING | Report |2022

WALK PATH
- Most areas have proper and easy walk paths
- Ensures free walking
- Congested walk path in many areas
- The size of the walk paths are comparatively less across the main
road
RECOMMENDATIONS
-There is a need to the building and the maintenance 0f proper
walk paths in the city to reduce accidents and increase easy acess
to all citizens
- Must construct walk paths with proper proportions.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
- Most of the areas have transportation facilities within 5 to 8
minutes walk
- Transportation facilities like private buses, autos are available
- 14% of the roads don’t have any transportation facilities within 10
minutes walk
RECOMMENDATIONS
- More bus stops and auto stands can be added
- Easily accessible cycle stations can be provided

GENDER USAGE
- Most of the area is occupied by mixed gender people.
RECOMMENDATIONS
- Certain measures can be provided to maintain balance of all
genders.
- So that everyone can access streets equally

SAFETY
- Safety audits indicate that most of the locations audited were felt
to be safe i.e. women claimed they felt comfortable in these areas
even after dark.
- Another locations were found to be Acceptable i.e. they felt safe
but they would prefer to take better routes if possible.
- At small portions, women felt uncomfortable and would avoid
these routes.

HAZARD
-Some areas were dumped with waste.
-There were less collapsing structures in surveyed area.
-There were transformers, electric poles etc. that obstructed pe-
destrian access.
3D PRINTING WORKSHOP REPORT
INTRODUCTION

As a part of Professional skill enhancement, a session on ‘An introduction to 3D printing’ was comducted on 24th August 2022. The
one day workshop was curated by Ar. Liya Sunny Anthraper.

Rhinoceros is a commercial 3D computer graphics and computer-aided design (CAD) application software. Grasshopper is a visual
programming language and environment that runs within the Rhinoceros 3D computer-aided design (CAD) application. Different
tools related to the software was introduced to the students. Pufferfish, a plugin was also introduced. The culmination of one day
workshop was by 3D printing one of the model designed by the students.

3D printing, also called additive manufacturing, is a process that produces objects by adding material in layers that correspond to
successive cross-sections of a 3D model. Plastics and metal alloys are the most commonly used materials for 3D printing,

Ar. Liya did a presentation about Digital architecture and robotic fabrication The presentation included her thesis work as well as
other works that she learned from ETH Zurich. Her main focus is on advancing the construction techniques and materials.
