Mini Research in Math

The student surveyed 10 classmates on their daily cell phone usage. They found that the 1st quartile spent 12 hours on phones, while the 5th decile spent 14 hours. The student personally spent 13 hours and ranked at the 30th percentile. The conclusion recommends reducing screen time to prevent health issues from excessive usage.

MINI

RESEARCH
IN MATH
(UNGROUPED DATA)
Number of Hours Spent Using Cell Phone
TITLE
I. INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS A CELL PHONE?
A cell phone is a wireless handheld device that allows users to
make and receive calls. While the earliest generation of mobile phones
could only make and receive calls, today’s mobile phones do a lot more,
accommodating web browsers, games, cameras, video players and
navigational systems. Also, while mobile phones used to be mainly
known as “cell phones” or cellular phones, today’s mobile phones are
more commonly called “smartphones” because of all of the extra voice
and data services that they offer.

People use cell phones for a lot of reasons. The most common
reasons of them are texting, calling, social media apps, taking selfies,
reading news, online shopping, online banking, playing games and
watching videos online.

Cell phones have a lot of good effects in our lives. They make
communication easier and faster. People can talk anywhere, anytime
even if they are on the other side of the planet with the use of cell
phones and internet connection. Cell phones can be substitute to things
like music player, cameras, newspaper, television and a lot more.
However, too much use of cell phones can harm us in a lot of ways. It is
reported, that people who talk on the phone for several hours a day are
50% more likely to develop brain cancer. The reason for this is the radio
waves produced by mobile phones. They may cause headaches,
decreased attention, shortness of temper, sleep disorders and depression,
mostly among teenagers. Radio waves are not the only reason for such
symptoms. It is the sad reality, that nowadays many people, especially
youth, experience lack of human contact, and they try to compensate it
by mobile-phone communication, which is not an adequate substitute for
personal intercourse.
II. PURPOSE
The purpose of this mini research is to see how many hours of
screen time a Grade 10 student has with their cell phones. As we all
know, excessive screen time can cause some health related problems.
And because of this pandemic, classes are held online using gadgets.
This makes students like me use gadgets more than before.

III. METHODS
The data is gathered from a class of Grade 10 students from
Cabancalan National High School and some online platforms. 10
students are chosen by the researcher to respond to the question “How
many hours do you spend using cell phones on a daily basis?” The data
is gathered by using online chatting from a social media app called
Messenger. Using the data I’ve gathered, I calculated the 1st Quartile, 5th
Decile and my own percentile rank.

IV. RESULTS
The researcher asked the selected students on how many hours
they spend using their cell phones on a daily basis.

Name of the Respondents Number of Hours Spent Using

Cell Phones
Victoria 11 Hours
Samantha 12 Hours
Joanna 12 Hours
Christine Ann 13 Hours
Mae 14 Hours
Sandara 14 Hours
Nikki 16 Hours
Louis 19 Hours
Renalyn 19 Hours
Darwen 19 Hours
SOLVING THE QUARTILE, DECILE AND MY OWN
PERCENTILE RANK
a. Solving the 1st Quartile:
Given: n = 10; k = 1
𝑘(𝑛 + 1)
𝑄𝑘 = 4
1(10 + 1)
𝑄1 =
4
11
𝑄1 =
4
𝑄1 = 2.75th
𝑄1 = 12 Hours

b. Solving the 5th Decile:

Given: n = 10; k = 5
𝑘(𝑛 + 1)
𝐷𝑘 = 10
5(10 + 1)
𝐷5 =
10
55
𝐷5 =
10
𝐷5 = 5.5  5th
𝐷5 = 14 Hours

c. Solving my own Percentile rank:

Given: n = 10; x = 13
Number of values below 13 = 3
𝑛𝑜. 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒𝑠 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑤 𝑥
𝑃𝑅 𝑜𝑓 𝑥 = × 100
𝑛
3
𝑃𝑅 𝑜𝑓 13 = × 100
10
𝑃𝑅 𝑜𝑓 13 = 30th Percentile
V. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION
Therefore, the 1st Quartile or 25% of the students spend less than
or exactly 12 hours of using cell phones while 75% of the students spend
more than 12 hours of using their cell phones. The 5th Decile or 50% of
the students spend less than or exactly 14 hours of using cell phones
while 50% of the students spend more than 14 hours of using their cell
phones. Lastly, I ranked 30th in the percentile ranking with 13 hours of
using my cell phone.

Based on the results of my research, most of my classmates spend

an excessive amount of hours using their cell phones. It is recommended
that they lessen the use of their cell phones to prevent the harmful
effects of excessive use of gadgets and screen time. Instead of playing
video games, browsing the social media applications and watching
videos for hours, I would recommend doing some exercise or active
recreational activities to keep them physically healthy and fit.
