In this lesson you will read a topic of English as a global language, its

roles and functions in our modern life. You will also learn basic grammar
points to understand English texts including parts of speech (Nouns,
Verbs, Adjectives, and Adverbs), word formation using affixes (-ment,
-ion, -cation, -ity, etc.), noun phrases, sentence components and basic
sentence structure.
Task 3
Read the following reading passage carefully.
The Power of English Language

Without the powerful language, English, connecting nations all over the world
would have been something impossible. Communication is very crucial in any field,
whether it is business, medicine, transport, technology, trade or marketing. English is
the language globally accepted and known by all. The role of English language in
globalizing people all over the world cannot be just expressed in words; the influence
of this commanding language is quite vast and diverse to define. If you consider
business, diplomacy, or politics, there should be proper gelling between nations.
Deep understanding is very much important in any field. Without proper
communication it is not possible in whichever way it may be.
The language you speak does play a big role in conveying and popularizing
your skills and requirements. Around 380 million consider English as the first
language, two-third of them prefer it as the second. In addition, billions are in the
learning process and many are exposed to this unflinching language. Various
predictions reveal that by 2050, half the world population will be proficient in English

A. Sentence Structure
Sentence structure is related to the components of a sentence:
[ Subject(S) Verb (V) Complement (C) / Object (O) Adverb (A) ]

Example 1:

Example 2:

Note: Objects come after transitive verbs, while complements come after linking verbs
Examples of linking verbs: be (am, is, are, was, were, being, been), become, seem, feel,
look, appear, etc.

Task 4
Find the components (S, V, C, O, A) of the following sentences. Put / to divide
the sentences into their components. Number 1 has been done for you as an
example.

B. Phrase formation: Noun Phrases
A noun phrase is a group of words that functions as a noun. In a sentence, it can
be the subject, object, complement, or object of a preposition. It has a head word
in the form of Noun and it is modified by other words.
Example:
1. Communication is very crucial in any field.
Any field is a noun phrase. The head word is field. It functions as the object
of preposition in.
2. English is the language globally accepted and known by all.
Look at the underlined noun phrase. What is the head word? (language)
What does it function in the sentence? (complement)

C. Word formation
Words can be of many kinds. The kinds of words are commonly referred to as
parts of speech. Parts of speech include Noun (kata benda), Verb (kata kerja),
Adjective (kata sifat), and Adverb (kata keterangan).
The following text contains many nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Read
this as an example.
Students should be able to communicate in English. They should be
communicative. They express their ideas communicatively. Their
communication helps them in the learning process.

The word communicate is a verb. This word can be added with suffix -ion to form
the Noun (communication); with -ive to form the Adjective (communicative), and the
Adjective can be added with suffix -ly to form the Adverb (communicatively).
