Chapter 3 Activities

The document contains four worksheets related to calculus concepts: 1) Rates of change problems involving finding velocities and average rates of change given position, cost, and revenue functions. 2) Related rates problems involving finding derivative relationships and rates of change given information about two varying quantities. 3) Curve sketching problems requiring analyzing the critical points and intervals of increasing/decreasing/concavity for polynomial functions. 4) Optimization problems involving finding dimensions that maximize a quantity like printed area or light let in, given certain constraints. Students are encouraged to show multiple solutions.

3.1 RATES OF CHANGE PROBLEMS

DIRECTION: Solve the following rates of change problems. Students are

encouraged to show different solutions to the problem aside from the standard
solution.

1. S(t) = 5t2 + 3t −10 describes the position of an object in meters after t

seconds. Find the velocity of the object after three seconds.

2. Suppose total cost in dollars from the production of x printers is given

by Cx   0.0001x  0.005x  28x  3000

3 2

Find the average rate of change of total cost when production

changes
(a) from 100 to 300 printers.
(b) from 300 to 600 printers.
(c) Interpret the results from parts (a) and (b).

3. If the total revenue function for a blender is Rx   36 x  0.01x where

2

x is the number of units sold, what is the average rate of change in

revenue R(x) as x increases from10 to 20 units?

4. Pose a rates of change problem and show different solutions

completely and provide illustrations.

3.2 RELATED RATES

DIRECTION: Solve the following related rates problems. Students are encouraged
to show different solutions to the problem aside from the standard solution.
A. Determine what is being required in the following using the given
properties:

dy dx
1. Given x  4 y  16 and
2 2
 2, find when x  4.
dt dt

dy dx   
2. Given 2 sin x  4 cos y  3 and  3, find at  ,  .
dt dt 6 3

B. Solve each problem:

1. A 25-foot ladder is leaning against a wall. The bottom of the ladder

is being pulled away from the wall at a rate of 3 feet per second. How
fast is the top of the ladder moving at the instant the bottom of the
ladder is 15 feet away from the wall? At the same instant, what is
the rate of change of the area between the ground, the wall, and the
ladder?
2. A cylindrical fountain is filled with juice. The can has a 10 cm
radius. How fast does the height of the juice in the can drop when
the drink is being drained at 5 cm3/sec?

C. Pose a related rates problem and show different solutions completely

and provide illustrations.

3.3 CURVE SKETCHING

DIRECTION: Answer as required. Show complete solutions.

A. Sketch the graph of the following functions by first finding the
following:

a. the relative extrema of f;

b. the intervals of which f is increasing;
c. the intervals of which f is decreasing;
d. the point/s of inflection of the graph;
e. where the graph is concave upward;
f. and where the graph is concave downward.
Summarize your answers using a table.

f x  
1 4 1 3
1.) x  x  x2  1
4 3
x2
2.) f x  
x 1

B. Pose a polynomial function of odd degree and sketch the graph of the
function applying the first and second derivative test for relative
extrema.

3.4 OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS

DIRECTION: Solve the following optimization problems and show different

solutions as possible.
1.) A printer needs to make a poster that will have a total area of 200 in2
and will have 1 in margins on the sides, a 2 in margin on the top and
a 1.5 in margin on the bottom. What dimensions of the poster will give
the largest printed area?

2.) A window is being built and the bottom is a rectangle and the top is a
semicircle. If there is 12 m of framing materials what must the
dimensions of the window be to let in the most light?
3.) A man launches his boat from point A on a bank of a straight river, 3
km wide, and wants to reach point B, 8 km downstream on the
opposite bank, as quickly as possible. He could proceed in any of
three ways:
1. Row his boat directly across the river to point C and then run to B;
2. Row directly to B; or
3. Row to some point D between C and B and then run to B.
If he can row 6 km/h and run 8 km/h, where should he land to reach
B as soon as possible?
