10 CALIBRATION BLOCKS
As reference calibration block, the V1 or V2 calibration blocks shall be used as given in Figure
1 and 2.
For establishing sensitivities, a basic calibration block in accordance with DNV OS-F101
Appendix D, B 300 series (as given in figure 3) shall be used. Basic calibration block shall be
made from the project specific mate rial.

11 CALIBRATION AND SENSITIVITY SETTINGS

The time base shall be calibrated using the V1 or the V2 calibration block.

Prior to the start of the examination the horizontal and vertical linearity of the equipment shall

be checked in accordance with BS 4331 . Probes will be assessed daily.

11.1- Sensitivity and Range Corrections:

General: Setting of range and sensitivity shall be carried out prior to each testing in accordance
with this International Standard and EN 583-2, taking the influence oftemperature into account.
The temperature difference during range and sensitivity setting and during the test shall be
within ±15 oC .
11.2- Test range & sensitivity shall be verified prior to each examination and reconfirmed
at the following stages:
At least every 4hrs during testing

Any change in equipment

Any change in the test parameters

Where changes in the equivalent settings are suspected

At the end of each inspection

12 EXAMINATION

12.1 LAMINATION CHECKS

The sensitivity shall be set by placing the probe on a defect free area of the material and
adjusting the 2nd back wall echo to 75 % (+/- 5%) of full screen height.

12.2 WELD INSPECTION:

12.2.1- Parent Metal Scan:

Prior to the examination of the weld the parent metal either side of the weld, where
accessible, shall be examined using 0° compressional waves over a distance of 100 mm from
the bevel. This test is to locate any laminar type defects in the parent metal, which will interfere
with or restrict the subsequent weld examination .
The parent metal scan sensitivity shall set at 2nd Back Wall Echo (BWE) to Full Screen
Height (FSH) .
Scan coverage shall include the entire area of parent material that will undergo a shear
wave interrogation . That extent is equal to the ~ or full skip distance plus ~ the weld

Petrofac
Procedure For Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Document No: A-QAC-PRO-730-38939
Revision B

cap width plus 10mm heat affected zone.

The skip distances are calculated for the shallowest angle probe to be used and the

choice of % or full skip is dependent on whether access for scanning is from one side, or from

both sides of the plate.

Skip distance can be calculated as shown and be used to confirm the extent of parent

metal scanning required .

12.2.2- Weld Metal Scans:

The sensitivity shall be set du ring the construction of the distance amplitude correction curve
(DAC).
Distance amplitude correction curves shall be constructed using the cal ibration ho les in the
applicable basic calibration block and shall be set up as follows :
The block width shall be a minimum 40mm and the length sufficient to obtain full skip. Minimum
3 echoes shall be used for every DAC. As shown in Figure 4 , the sound path from point A to
reflector shall not be less than 0,6 N where N is the near field length of the probe.

The echo height from position A shall be maximized and the gain control regulated so that the
echo height is 75% (+/- 5%) of full screen height. This gain setting is ca lied the primary gain
and shall be recorded. Without altering this gain setting, the maximized echo height from points
Band C shall be plotted on the screen.
The reference curve is now to be drawn as a smooth line through the three points. Curves
being respectively 20% and 50% of the reference curve shall also be constructed.

12.3 SIMULATION
When the sensitivity has been established, this sensitivity may be correlated to the drilled hole

in the V1 or V2 block, plus any applicable transfer correction .

During the operation on site the V1 or V2 block will be utilized to confirm the operational

sensitivity if necessary.

12.4 RE-CALIBRATION
At the end of the examination, or every four hours, or change of operator, and whenever a
malfunction of the equipment is suspected, calibration must be checked. Re-calibration shall
also be done if any part of equipment is changed or replaced or equipment switched on-off.
If a point on the DAC has increased more than 2 dB of its amplitude, ail recorded indications
since the last check shall be re-examined with the corrected calibration. If a point on the DAC
has decreased more than 2 dB of its amplitude , ail examination covered since the last
calibration shall be Re-examined with the corrected calibration .
ln addition to this, a daily control shall be done in the following way . Indication set at 80% FSH
then decrease the amplitude -12 dB with the dB control. Obtained indication limits 16-24% of
FSH. If indication is outside the Iimits, the instrument shall be removed from use. This shall be
logged daily by operator.

12.5 THICKNESS MEASUREMENTS

As reference, the V1 or V2 calibration blocks shall be used (reference is made to Figure 1 &

2).

The time base shall be calibrated to enable a minimum of five back wall echoes from the

sarnple to be displayed . For better accuracy, calibration and wall thickness readings will be

between the first and fifth back wall echoes.

12.6 SURFACE CONDITION

The contact surface of the material shall be free of any weld spatter or other substance, which
might impede the transmission of ultrasound to the material.

12.7 Transfer correction

The primary gain shall be corrected for difference in surface character and attenuation between
the reference block and the actual pipe by means of the double probe technique. Two identical
angle probes, facing each other one skip distance apart as shown in figure 5 shall be used.
The primary gain shall be corrected accordingly and then become the corrected primary gain.
The gain correction necessitated by such difference shall be at most 6 dB.

12.8 INSPECTION OF WELDS

The welds shall be examined in such a manner that the entire weld volume is scanned. Where
100 % weld examination is required, the method of scanning for transverse defects is given in
figure 6.
The scanning sensitivity is the corrected primary reference level (DAC+any applicable transfer
correction) + 6 dB, discontinuities however, shall be evaluated using the corrected primary
reference level.

12.9 EXECUTION

12.9.1 Scanning speed

The rate of probe movement for examination shall not exceed 100 mm/sec.

12.9.2 Overlap
Each pass of the probe shall overlap a minimum of 15% of the transducer (piezo electric
element) dimension perpendicular to the direction of the scan .

12.9.3 DEFECT SIZING AND ACCEPTABILITY

Defects will be sized for dimensional evaluation using the 6 dB drop or maximum amplitude
methods.
