LETTERS TO ABBA JOURNALING PROMPTS
We can get a little caught up in doing the things God wants us to do. We evangelize, show
love to others, serve in the church, and all of those activities. We do all of these and forget
to love the one who sent us. So today, talk to him about ways He wants you to love him.
Here’s an example:
Dear ____ How are you? How full is your love tank today? Full, half, or empty? How do you
feel about the love I’ve been giving you.
Go on to talk to him about it.
Prompt 2
I’m scared
On this journey with Abba, I used to feel like it was taboo to be afraid. And I was so ashamed
to talk about my fears; until one day I wrote all of them I could remember in my journal. And
after reading them out loud, I could see how they had solutions. I believe that a problem
once written is a problem half solved, lol.
So the thing is, I was so afraid of God’s idea of time. I had just realized that a thousand days
to me is just one day to him. I read stories of how He would wait until his own time to show
up for people. So I said serving him means I can suffer forever. But after writing, I began to
remember how He had shown up for others. How when His time comes, it’s so beautiful. I
began to counter my fears with the word.
Dear ____ on this journey with you, I’ve found myself afraid of ...
Prompt 3
Come out of hiding
Sometimes, certain things make us feel unsafe and stop us from experiencing Abba fully. So
we hide. We don’t know how to come out. We feel ashamed to voice it out. But this is a safe
space where you can come out. I don’t know if this happens to you, but sometimes my
thoughts don’t form fully until I put them down in words. Sit with your thoughts and write
them down. You’ll see that there are things in hiding. Ps. You can play one of my favourite
songs, Come out of hiding by Steffany Gretzinger
It’s really okay to apologize to Abba. Yes, He has made the provision for forgiveness. On the
cross, all your sins were forgiven. But God is your father. When you go out of His will, go
back to Him knowing that He loves you. He will always welcome you with open arms. He
loves the repentant heart. I don’t know where that doctrine came from that you don’t need
to repent. It keeps you from truly seeing Abba as your father and the one who can save you.
Dear __ I am sorry this happened ____ (talk about it) But I believe you’ve made provisions for
me. I receive my forgiveness. I receive grace not to stand in sin again.
Prompt 5
I’m in awe
You know, sometimes we forget Abba and how wonderful He is. We lose the wonder. He
becomes so basic to us, and we are not in awe anymore. Today we are going back in awe.
Look for a song that speaks to the awe of God. Play it, sing along and write words of awe to
him.
Song suggestions: Wonder by Bethel Music and Amanda Cook
Prompt 6
Tear it down
Prompt 7
A baby
What’s one thing you used to enjoy doing with God or something you loved about God
when you were younger that you no more do. How did it make you feel back then? This is so
important because logic and adulting rob us of that childhood joy we enjoyed.
One day I was worshipping, and I felt this strong push to stand up and dance. Not just any
kind of dance, but the contemporary/ballet type. In Nigeria, we call it Kingdom Dance,
hahaha. I did that for hours, and I felt so connected to God. It hit me that I used to do that a
lot when I was a child, but as I grew older, I felt so foolish doing them, so I stopped. I missed
out on an activity that was such a big part of my life. That day I sat and started talking to
Abba to remind me of all the things I did as a child that brought us together. I wanted to be a
child again.
Prompt 8
The stop
Why did you stop? And be very honest with yourself. It doesn’t stop at remembering the
things you did. Know why you stopped so that you can address that with Abba.
Prompt 9
Trusting God.
Would you say you trust God? As you read that, what was the first thing that came to mind.
One thing I’ve realized is that there are certain areas we trust God so easily. Let’s talk to
Abba about it today. Tell him the areas you’ve realized that trusting him came easy and why
that is the case.
Prompt 10
Not trusting God
In what areas has it been difficult for you to trust God. Based on our life exposure and
circumstances, we all experience different trust deficits. Like me, there was a time in my life
that I couldn’t give out my clothes because I felt they wouldn’t come back. I didn’t even
realize it until one day I took some time to think about it. Why was it so difficult to give it
away? It was because I didn’t trust that God was able to provide the funds for me to get
more clothes. Other areas of my life like my academics, health, etc. I trusted God with
everything. I would lay hands on the sick, and trust with all of my heart that His word is final
and healing would happen. And this is what I was exposed to. I wasn’t exposed to that
abundance from God, so I just couldn’t wrap my mind around it. Now the thing is, if you
don’t intentionally ask him to show you, it can go very unnoticed. Today, navigate the areas
you don’t trust.
Prompt 11
His word
What are some promises God has made concerning them? Those things that are so difficult
to lay at His feet completely, what has He said about them in the scriptures? This is
important because as believers, the word is our weapon to fight these battles. It’s God’s
word that eliminates it all. Even till now, I’m constantly reading the scriptures that speak of
His abundance and His capacity to provide for me. Because I want to have His word in my
heart always to counter the lies of the enemy. I want to build my capacity to understand that
Abba is my father, and He can provide. We fight with His words. Trust issues in our lives are
pointers to areas where we’ve not claimed God’s intention for us. Claim His intention for
you.
Prompt 12
Searching
Now, this may be difficult for a lot of you. It’s easy to go on our journeys and not thoroughly
search our own hearts to know the mindsets, thoughts, patterns, behaviors, etc that have led
us in the wrong direction. A regular heart check is important. Today, you are asking Abba to
search your heart and show you any evil way. And if there is, He should help you take it
away.
Prompt 13
His hands
This was a prayer I prayed a while ago that was so scary. Because I knew that it could mean
anything could go. Anything! I asked him to show me what I have involved in that his hand
wasn’t there. I wanted to know so I could go. Even if it was the most glamourous thing, if he
had moved from it, I wanted to move too. So I prayed, and I began to just pour my heart out
on that topic. And he did show me. It was painful, yet beautiful.
Prompt 14
Strength from The Psalms
Read Psalm 29 and contemplate the strength of the Lord. Read as many translations as you
can. This Psalm boasts of the strength of the Lord. And you know the most beautiful thing?
The Psalm ends with a comforting word that This Big and Powerful Lord will give you
strength. How does that make you feel? To know that is where your strength comes from.
Prompt 15
Intercession
Talk to Abba about people you want to pray for and tell him why you want to pray for them.
Tell him how you feel about them and why this is a big deal. And as you do this, write with
the consciousness that you are going to be praying His will over them and not merely your
desires.
Prompt 16
He has the answers
Today, admit to Abba something that has confused you. You can’t grow with God without
being honest. He’s not looking for instant perfection on your part. He loves processes and
wants to meet you where you are.
Prompt 17
Express
Today, don’t try to follow a prompt or anything; just express yourself. Let Abba lead you.
You’ve got this!
Prompt 18
Torn
This is for you if you feel torn. When you get to this point, something is pulling you apart
that you need to identify. And remember, you are not on this journey alone. Ask Abba to tell
you what is pulling you apart. He may reply to you immediately, it may take days or weeks.
But do your part, pour it all out, and ask for His help. Tell Him how you feel about being
pulled apart and you need this help to deal with it.
Prompt 19
Fear
In what areas of my life am I afraid? Why am I afraid, and what does your word say about it?
Sometime in March 2021, I realized that I was afraid to rest in God.
I didn’t realize this until I journaled one day and asked God what area of my life fear was
ruling. And I asked myself this question. And realized that I was afraid to rest. I was afraid
that the world would leave me. And I would become stale while I’m busy resting. But then I
had to go search scriptures, what does God say about rest, what is in it for me. And now all I
want to do all the days of my life is rest in God.
Prompt 20
The mirror
Today you are writing to yourself. Who do you see in the mirror? Describe yourself and look
up to who God has made you. Meditate on as many scriptures as you can find. Answer in
your journal genuinely if who you saw in the mirror is the same person God sees. Sit on this
one for a while.
Prompt 21
Love letter
Think about all the roles God has played in your life and write a love letter to him. Ps.
Nothing beats Him sending His son to die for you, just saying. So if you can’t think of
anything that’s one of the greatest things anyone can ever do for you.
Prompt 22
Silly giggles
Tell Abba the silliest thing that has happened to you recently and have a good laugh with
him. Logic and the idea of coming “perfect” keep us away from experiencing fatherhood with
Abba. One day I was giving Abba this very sweet gist and laughing out loud. If anyone had
seen me, they probably would have called me mad for laughing with my book. They don’t
know anything!
Prompt 23
Smiles
Talk to Abba about something that made you smile recently and why it made you smile. He’s
very interested in things like that too.
Prompt 24
Remembering
Remembering is key, but we forget. Today is thanksgiving. Write about all the times Abba
has shown His hand in your life. All those moments when you knew that it could have only
been God. Count your miracles today. And take note of this letter. You will come back to it
when you can’t remember how good your father has been. Yes, this happens. It’s a strategy
from the devil. But we are ready for him now right?
Prompt 25
It slaps different
We learn every day, and some things stick longer than others. In our Gen Z Lingua, it slaps
differently. And it’s important to write and explore these things. Why was it so profound to
you? what made you come to the realization? Explore it more. Today, tell Abba something
you learned recently
Prompt 26
Can He count on me?
I was reading Genesis 18:17-19 sometime in June. God was so sure of something about
Abraham. That no matter what, God knew that Abraham will raise his children and household
after God. And this led me to ask, “what is that thing that God can beat His chest for and say
I know Tonye will do this?” This led me to explore areas I needed to work on. God wants
men He can trust. So ask yourself that question. What can God be so sure of when it comes
to you. It’s like an onion question. As you answer, you go into more layers.
Prompt 27
The sender
It’s easy to be involved in activities that seemingly make you think you are having a
relationship with God. But deep down you know it’s all just activity and semantics. Most
times it’s difficult to admit this. We don’t even realize it ourselves until maybe the Holy Spirit
brings it to our attention or you do a deep and honest evaluation to figure it all out. For me,
it was a lot of service. Until it hit me that I was so focused on the task from the one who
sent me and not the sender. For you, it could be anything. It could be corporate prayers, etc.
Today explore this and truly ask yourself what has replaced intimacy. Ask Abba to show you.
Prompt 28
What’s next Papa?
What’s next Papa? Now, this is something that must go into your journal. We didn’t make
ourselves, Abba did. And He has plans and purposes for us. This question is one that I ask at
every new turn in my life. May it never be said that I took a left turn when He wanted me to
turn right. And yes! It’s a reality you can live in. where you are so in tune with Abba that He’s
involved in all your decision. And you will achieve this by knowing Him, fellowshipping with
Him, and praying much in the Spirit. So as you write this in your journal, don’t let it stop
there. Get to know Him. My Pastor would say “think God.”
Prompt 29
Teach me
What do you want to teach me? With the help of the Holy Spirit, Abba is always willing to
teach us things. He is our father, oh. You know how our earthly fathers enjoy teachable
moments where they get to pour their wisdom into you; He enjoys that too. He has called
some into the office of teachers, that’s great, and we are forever thankful for that. But
there’s also a place where the Holy Spirit brings light to things for you. Today simply ask.
Prompt 30
Q&A
Ask Him a question. As direct as it can be. Not cutting corners, ask Him that question that
has been burning in your heart. Simply put it down in your journal. And train yourself to
pause for answers.
Prompt 31
Lamentations
Today we lament. Sometimes I struggle to complain. You know that feeling when you’ve
been taught to confess the scriptures and all of that. So I used to feel bad for complaining to
God. But once in a while, it’s okay to just pour out all your heart. Tell him where it’s pinching
you.
Prompt 32
Go over
Today, simply go over all that you’ve written. And write as it comes to your heart. Prompts
are good, but on some days, write from the heart.
Prompt 33
His Love
When was the last time you felt God’s love? The moment when it felt like the love of God
was so overwhelming, and you were in awe. If you haven’t, talk to him about it. God loves
you so much, and He wants you to constantly operate in His love.
Prompt 34
Around me
Today, look around you and describe all that’s in your line of sight and heart. All that you see,
the emotions you are feeling, and the impression it’s laying in your heart. So I keep this
journal where I write things I’m thankful for every day. One morning, I pulled out my journal,
and nothing came to mind. I wasn’t thankful for anything. That day I told myself that I would
not leave that spot until I found something I was thankful for. So I looked around and
immediately I started to see things. I was thankful for my thriving plant that had looked like it
wouldn't survive. I was thankful for my sister who gave me a Tv and more. I think that day
was my longest journal entry! It was over 4 pages. So look around you and allow your spirit
to write through you.
Prompt 35
Thanksgiving
Since we are on this topic, what are you thankful for today?
Prompt 36
The idol
When you hear that word, what comes to mind? Let me guess, a painting or sculpture in one
shrine somewhere. I blame Nollywood, lol. Truth is anything that can satisfy you more than
God becomes an idol in your life. I think you should explore this today. Any idols you need to
identify?
Prompt 37
Update
How’s everything been lately? Don’t you think Abba deserves a life update? I think He does.
Prompt 38
Desires
What are the desires of your heart? Yes, Abba knows all that you need and will give them to
you according to His time and plan. But there’s nothing wrong in talking about the things you
desire and just having that long conversation. Imagine you sitting on your dad’s bed and
telling him how much you need that new phone. I want you to get comfortable talking to
Abba about just everything!
Prompt 39
Big feelings
I used to think Abba was there for the peaceful and positive feelings. You can never show or
display anger towards Him. Bruh! When my uncle died a couple of years ago, I was so angry
at God. Why would you let the sweetest and most supportive uncle I have die? Like why???
That time, I was battling with the hurt from the death and also the anger that I couldn’t go to
God with it. I was talking to my mum, and she mentioned how she had gone to God to deal
with her anger towards everything and that God had opened her eyes to a couple of things
that have brought some level of comfort. And in my head, I was like "oh, you can tell Him
you're angry? You can share big feelings?" That was such a huge relief. Now, I don't even
waste time taking my feelings to Him. And one thing about Abba is that He's a good father.
He'll never leave you with those big feelings. Talk to Him about it today.
Prompt 40
Me
Have you ever taken out time to appreciate the gifts and talents that Abba has given you?
And please don’t even think for a second that you don’t have any. Because you have so
much! Do you know who created you? ABBA! The master creator. The best of the best.
Today take out time and write to Him about all that He blessed you with and give Him
thanks.
