Background of the University

Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU) was first established in 1993
as Nazareth Technical College (NTC), offering degree and diploma level ed-
ucation in technology fields. Later, the institution was renamed as Nazareth
College of Technical Teacher Education (NCTTE), a self-explanatory label that
describes what the institution used to train back then: candidates who would
become technical teachers for TVET colleges/Schools across the country.

Currently, ASTU is setting up a Research Park, in collaboration with stakeholders

and other concerned bodies: one of a kind in the Ethiopian context. The uni-
versity is also venturing out to the wider community and is currently engaged

I. Introduction

The school of Civil Engineering and Architecture has diverse programs coherent
with the Ethiopia’s long-term plan towards developing its water resources and civil
infrastructures in a sustainable way. Expansion of new constructions in developing
countries like ours is vital. Highways, roads, buildings, stadiums and related infrastruc-
tures will boost economy of the country in general. Besides, Ethiopia has a water
resources potential of about 163 billion cubic meters. Considering water availability
and land suitability, the country has about 7.5 million hectares of irrigation poten-
tial. However, these resources are not adequately developed to support socio-eco-
nomic development of the nation. Moreover, frequent floods and droughts have
become serious water-related problems in the country. Therefore, the develop-
ment of civil and water resources engineering related programs must be a cen-
tral element of the country’s strategy to improve the quality of life of the people.

School of Civil Engineering and Architecture

School of Civil Engineering and Architecture is important to provide the

needs of engineers trained to plan, design, construct, operate and main-
tain civil works, water work schemes for the development of the coun-
try. Furthermore, graduated professionals of the school can able to exam-
ine the opportunities and challenges associated with the planning, project
formulation, sustainability and environmental impact assessment of any projects.

Public lecture on the topic: “Smart City Development: Experience from

Korean Smart City Development” delivered at ASTU

The department of Technology and Innovation Management under the School of

Humanities and Social Sciences in collaboration with the Vice President for Research
and Technology Transfer arranged a public lecture offered by a renowned Korean
Professor. Prof. Junseok Hwang is an information scientist at Seoul National University,
in the Department of Technology Management, Economics, and Policy. Through his
work, Prof. Hwang seeks to build a worldwide platform and partnership for substantial
value generation of ICT for the cause of humanity. He was involved in leading global
ICT trends and policy analyses through education, research works, and publications.
Recently, he has authored new book series, Digitalogy, proclaiming the new digital
philosophy of this era. Apart from contributing to the SNU College of Engineering,
Prof. Hwang has led the International IT Policy Program (ITPP) at SNU with the dedi-
cated mission of educating international IT policy specialists from around the globe.

The attendants of the public lecture were ASTU academic staff, attendants
from Gada special economic zone authority and attendants from the Adama
smart city development office, and postgraduate students of the Technology
and Innovation Management Program. Professor Hwang has paid special atten-
tion to his philosophy that there is no smart city without smart citizenship. He also
suggested that appropriate and inclusive policy should be designed whenev-
er there is a need for developing a smart city in Adama/Gada special econom-
ic zone authority. Professor Hwang underscored that a smart city starts with smart
citizenship, rationality, morality, and a basic level of humanity. People who have
committed their future to a given city are smart citizens. University professors
are considered real professors if they practice their knowledge into the future.

The university must always be one generation ahead to be a model and

a guardian of freedom. The university needs to instil the spirit of learn-
ing in the citizens. Thus professors and those who have acquired the skills
and knowledge are the infrastructures of the future; they are the frontiers

EDC-ETHIOPIA’s engagement to instil Entrepreneurial mind-set among un-
dergraduate students, organized at University level. More so, making a bam-
boo bike was the second business idea brought by the team in the same year.

After graduating on December, 2020, the team set up a start-up company named
“BammGo” to proceed in producing bamboo bikes. Finding working premises
and capital were the main challenges that they faced. The first problem was re-
solved by the provision of a workshop space by ASTU’s Centre of Excellence for
Entrepreneurship, and financial resources were secured from family & few grants.
Currently, at BammGo 5 bamboo bikes are produced within 15 days. However,
producing 20 eco-friendly bikes per day is the future plan of the startup business.
