Question
Compare and contrast FDDI and CDDI. (5 Marks)
FDDI
FDDI stands for Fiber Distributed Data Interface that specifies a 100 Mbps, high-performance fiber
optic token ring using the fiber-optic transmission medium.
Advantages of FDDI
FDDI offers high security as it is difficult to eavesdrop on fiber optic link.
Fiber optic cables are used and as such they are not susceptible to Electromagnetic
Interference (EMI).
Fiber optic cables transmit signals over greater distances of about 200 Kms.
FDDI uses multiple tokens to improve network speed.
It is possible to provide priority to the workstations connected in the chain. Hence based on
the requirement some stations are bypassed to provide faster service to the rest.
FDDI can isolate faulty nodes with use of wiring concentrators for instantaneous re-routing.
Wiring concentrators function as centralized cabling connection devices for workstations.
Disadvantages of FDDI
FDDI is complex and hence would require a great deal of expertise during installation and
maintenance
FDDI is quite costly as the fiber optic cables, adapters and concentrators are very expensive.
CDDI
CDDI stands for Copper Distributed Data Interface which is an implementation of fiber distributed
data interface (FDDI) networking through the use of cabling by using unshielded twisted pair cables
(UTP) made of copper.
CDDI uses the same protocols and constructs as FDDI but uses copper twisted-pair wire as the
medium for transmission instead of fiber optic cables.
Disadvantages of CDDI
