2 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes
As a best-practice, do not save user-created files (templates, configuration
files, model files, and so forth) in the Program Files area. Instead, use the
user-specific folders for storing files.
If the program fails to function as expected, run the program as an
Administrator (right-click the icon, and choose Run as Administrator) to
work around the issue.
Setting up the Internet Explorer web
browser client
Note: You can disregard this procedure if you are using Internet Explorer 9
(or later version), and the Use High Performance Trends (HPT) option is
enabled in the User Preferences page of Aspen Production Control Web
Server. (The option is enabled by default in the V8.7 release.)
Log onto the current machine as a user with Administrator rights. Then
perform the following procedures to set up the Internet Explorer web browser
client for accessing the Aspen Production Control Web Server site:
In Internet Explorer, temporarily lower the security level of the Local
intranet zone to "Low". Then access the Aspen Production Control Web
Server site and add it to the Local Intranet Zone.
After you are logged onto the Aspen Production Control Web Server,
download, complete the following step to install the Aspen plotting
components (a one-time procedure):
o Access the Plots view in Aspen Production Control Web Server while
you are logged onto the current machine as an Administrator.
As a result, you are prompted to accept the AspenTech plotting
components for downloading and automatic installation on the client
machine.
After successfully downloading and installing the plotting components,
return the security level of the Local intranet zone back to "Medium-low
(default)."
Special Considerations for
Windows Server 2008 and
Windows Server 2012
On Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or Windows Server 2012 R2, you will need
to run some programs using elevated privileges (that is, Run As
Administrator).
If the program fails to function as expected, run the program as Administrator
(right-click the icon, and choose Run as Administrator) to work around the
issue.

Controller), and Aspen IQmanage (in Aspen Inferential Qualities).
Install Database Configuration procedure for Aspen Watch or Aspen RTO
Watch.
When downloading the Aspen Web.21 plot controls from Aspen Production
Control Web Server (on an Internet Explorer client machine).
The following programs are configured to Run as Administrator automatically,
and they prompt the user for permission to continue when launching:
Aspen APC Manage.
Configure Online Server utility for Aspen Process Controller.
Installing AMS Advanced
Process Control Products
The following items describe installing for the first time or upgrading to the
V8.7 versions.
The AMS Advanced Process Control software is distributed on aspenONE
DVD 2, which is delivered as part of the aspenONE release.
Important: See the next section, "Aspen Manufacturing and Supply
Chain - Two DVDs."
The aspenONE release requires Software License Manager (SLM) V8.5, or
later, to perform installation and run-time license checking. AMS Advanced
Process Control products will not run without the proper license keys
installed on an SLM server.
Do not attempt to install Aspen Nonlinear Controller (online server), Aspen
DMCplus Controller (online server), or Aspen IQ (online server) software
on the Aspen Watch Server or Aspen RTO Watch Server computer.
AspenTech recommends that Aspen Watch or Aspen RTO Watch be
installed on a separate, dedicated server. Typically, a dedicated computer
should also be used to run Aspen Production Control Web Server software.
However, if computer resources allow, then running Aspen Production
Control Web Server and APC Online applications on the same computer is
acceptable. For more information regarding typical computer
configurations for AMS Advanced Process Control software see Appendix B
of the Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control Installation
Guide.
There are several dependencies between the Online software products,
and additional integration between the AMS Information Management
components and Watch Server and Web Server products. When installing
or upgrading AMS Advanced Process Control products, you must also
install the associated dependent products. For a list of all AMS Advanced
Process Control product dependencies, see Appendix A of the Aspen
Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control Installation Guide.

Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain –
Two DVDs
There are two versions of the Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD to
support the different licensing models used by AspenTech. The two DVDs are
labeled Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2T and Aspen
Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2.
Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2T
DVD 2T contains the media that supports the aspenONE Licensing Model
token-based system. Under this licensing model, customers are entitled to
install and run all of AspenTech's Manufacturing and Supply Chain products as
long as they have purchased sufficient tokens. To install software purchased
under this commercial agreement, use the DVD labeled Aspen Manufacturing
and Supply Chain DVD 2T. Software installed from this DVD requires run-time
token-based license keys.
Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2
DVD 2 contains the media that supports perpetual and pre-aspenONE
Licensing Model token-based systems. If you have perpetual license
agreements or token-based license agreements by product (pre-July 2009),
you should use the DVD labeled Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD
2.
aspenONE Licensing Model
The aspenONE Licensing Model is a flexible token-based approach to software
licensing. This unique and innovative commercial model makes it easier for
customers to use software when and where they need it. Customers have
access to all current and future AspenTech products with just one contract.
Upgrading to the aspenONE Licensing Model for
Manufacturing and Supply Chain V8.7
If you have recently purchased a new aspenONE Licensing Model agreement,
or if you have superseded an old license agreement with an aspenONE
Licensing Model token-based license agreement for aspenONE Manufacturing
and Supply Chain, you will receive a new token-based license file for V8.7,
and you should use the Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2T.
During installation of any product in Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain,
you will get a message indicating that the newly installed software will use
the token-based license key. Accepting the warning message enables you to
install the software.
Note: The Aspen Manufacturing and Supply Chain DVD 2T only works with
an updated token-based license file for aspenONE Manufacturing and Supply
Chain. If you do not have the updated token-based license file, please

New Features
The following new-features are introduced in Aspen Manufacturing Suite
(AMS) Advanced Process Control V8.7.
Aspen Process Controller and
Aspen DMCplus
Aspen DMC3 platform added for greatest
level of applications maintainability
Each new project created in Aspen Process Controller Builder or Aspen
DMCplus Model must now be selected as either an Aspen DMC3 project or a
legacy APC or DMCplus project. The Aspen DMC3 project produces
applications that are marked as "DMC3."
The DMC3 mark ( ) ensures the greatest level of application
maintainability during the lifetime of the application. (Legacy APC or DMCplus
applications can also be converted to DMC3.)
Aspen DMC3 applications have the complete set of adaptive process control
technologies available at all times, thus allowing continuous, low-cost
application maintenance, rather than intrusive project-based reworking of the
controller.
The features of Aspen DMC3 are designed to keep the controller operating at
high performance throughout the different stages of operation of the physical
process. This includes stages leading up to or coming out of a plant
turnaround, process changes, and adapting to new disturbances not originally
seen during commissioning. Aspen DMC3 applications provide an emphasis on
automated maintainability and robust control.
Shared features and differences between Aspen DMC3 applications and legacy
APC / DMCplus applications are summarized in the following table.
Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes 7
Aspen APC /
Aspen DMC3 Aspen DMCplus
Multiple model types
DMCplus (FIR), State-Space (MIMO), and
Nonlinear (MISO) model types are
available for Aspen Process Controller
applications.
Only the FIR model type is used in Aspen
DMC3 applications.
Controller applications
SmartStep applications
NOTE: In Aspen DMC3 applications, at
least one test group must be defined
before the application can be deployed to
an online server
Calibrate mode
Calibrate mode is always available for
Aspen DMC3 applications.
For APC / DMCplus applications, Calibrate
mode is conditionally available, based on
site license agreements.
Composite applications
Aspen Watch performance monitoring
In Aspen DMC3 applications, Aspen
Watch performance monitoring is always
enabled.
For APC / DMCplus applications, enabling
for Aspen Watch is conditionally
available, based on site license
agreements.
Adaptive Modeling

Robust control
In Aspen DMC3 applications, Robust
Control is available, both offline and
online, for controllers originating from
Aspen Process Controller Builder.
For APC / DMCplus applications,
Robustness Factor is available only
offline, in Simulation, for evaluation
purposes.
8 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes
Robust Control compensates for model
mismatch and other errors
The Robustness Factor, introduced in V8.7 for DMC3 applications, is a tuning
parameter designed to increase the closed-loop controller robustness. This
feature improves the performance of the controller when facing significant
model uncertainties, such as model errors, unmeasured disturbances and
near collinearity in the model.
As the Robustness Factor is increased, the engine increases the economic
optimization relaxation tolerance and / or CV active constraint violation
tolerance. These two tolerances are used in the steady-state target
calculation to produce a more stable steady state target over time. The new
steady state target is kept unchanged or as close as possible to the steady
state target calculated in the previous run cycle.
Also, if near collinearity exists in the model gain matrices and the steady-
state target calculation tries to make a weak direction movement, the active
constraints of the relevant CVs may be temporarily relaxed to avoid the weak
direction movement. The active constraint relaxation will first be applied on
the CV with lower priority. If a weak direction movement persists, the
relaxation will be applied to the remaining CVs.
The user sets the behavior using the Robustness Factor, a normalized number
between 0 and 1. A value of zero turns the feature off, while a value close to
zero provides modest tolerances and, therefore, less deviation from the true
steady state optimum. As the number approaches 1, the controller will tend
to eliminate all weak direction moves and forgo the economic optimization;
instead, it will only move the current target in response to constraint
violations.
Offline, the Robustness Factor can be used for evaluation purposes in both
Aspen DMCplus Simulate and Aspen Process Controller Builder for all
applications. Online, however, Robust Control is available only for DMC3
applications built and deployed using Aspen Process Controller Builder.
Aspen Process Controller
Improvements in workflow for Aspen
Process Controller Builder
The following workflow improvements are in Aspen Process Controller Builder:
A new Model Update Workflow is available from the master model view
in the Case Editor dialog box. (To access it, click the Update Workflow
toolbar button in the master model view.)
Each screen in the Model Update Workflow is part of a guided process
for updating the master model of an FIR (DMCplus) model identification
project. Updating is based on datasets and variables, case model
identifications, and collinearity repairs that you select.
Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes 9
The most common use of the Model Update Workflow is to update a
model with new data, while respecting previously-entered model structure
information.
In the main model view of the Case Editor dialog box, a Constraints tab
is added to enable defining gain constraints for the master model.
Furthermore in the Constraints tab, there are toolbar buttons, Send to
Cases and Receive from Cases, that enable you to transfer gain
constraints that you have defined in either the master model or case
models.
If you have the Auto check box selected in the master model, which
causes the results of case model identifications to be transferred
automatically to the master model, there is a Preferences tab option to
prevent overwriting of master model gain constraints by case model(s)
gain constraints.
Toolbar buttons, in the Models tab of the Case Editor, are available for
quickly adding gain constraints of zero (0), one (1), or negative one (-1)
to selected model variable pairs. Optionally, these toolbar buttons are also
available in the master model view.
A new Datasets tab, added on the left side of the Case Editor dialog
box, enables you to manage datasets that are in the APC Workspace
window, without having to leave the Case Editor.
A cases folder view is added to the Case Editor dialog box. The view is
displayed when you select a folder containing one or more model
identification cases. The view is dedicated to all of the case models and
imported models that are grouped into the selected folder.
The view includes a Compare Models tree with check boxes for selecting
which case trial models to plot. After you select case trial models, the
Models plotting area displays a matrix of step response plots that are
overlaid for comparison. You can include master model curves in the
matrix, for comparison, and you can access plots of trial model predictions
in a separate View Predictions dialog box.
New toolbar buttons are added to nearly all views in the Case Editor
dialog box to reduce screen clutter, provide easier access to special
operations, and improve usability.
Previously, in the Case Editor dialog box, the Parameters tab was the
default view displayed after you created or selected a model identification
case. To improve usability and reduce screen clutter, the functions
previously conducted in the Parameters tab are now separated into two
tabs:
o The Variables tab - This tab is displayed by default when you create a
new case. Use the Variables tab to designate which dataset and
vectors you want used for model identification in the current case.
o The Parameters tab - This tab enables configuring one or multiple
model identification trials, with each trial consisting of a set of
parameters for defining how a model identification should occur for the
current case. The trials are organized into two list-tables according to
the two main algorithms used for model identification: Subspace
Trials or FIR Trials.
A Calculate Typical Moves dialog box, dedicated to calculating typical
moves for a case model or master model, is available from the Case
10 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes
Editor. Right-click anywhere in the model step response plots, and from
the right-click, shortcut menu, select Calculate Typical Moves...
For each selected model input variable, you can update the typical move
value based on a vector you select from any dataset that is in the
Dataset column of the APC Workspace.
From the Predictions tab of the Case Editor, you can now add
replacement slices to a dataset that is used for model identification. A
replacement slice adds a slice region in which measurement values are
replaced with comparable prediction values. Unless specified otherwise, a
bias and slope are added to the measurement curve so that the
replacement does not cause a jump in the value at the beginning and
ending boundaries of the slice.
In the Create Parallel Group dialog box, which is displayed from the
Collinearity Analysis dialog box, there is a new Optimize feature. It
manipulates gains in order to repair collinearities in the parallel group. The
gain revisions resulting from Optimize are kept as close as possible to the
original gains, as displayed before you use Optimize.
The feature for importing Aspen DMCplus vector files, via the Import
Vectors dialog box is more flexible. You can choose to place the imported
vectors in a new or existing dataset that you specify, or you can place
them in a dataset that you are currently viewing in the Dataset window.
The Dataset window, for viewing vectors in a single dataset, has
improvements and added features:
o Buttons are added for managing calculated vectors in a dataset. They
enable you to import and export calculated vectors, and refresh
calculated vector results in the current dataset.
o Toolbar buttons make slice functions more accessible. A button is
provided for adding a bad data slice, adding an interpolated data slice,
and editing all data slices in the current dataset.
Aspen Production Control Web
Server
Added flexibility for language locale
selections and numeric formatting
The Language selections available in the User Preferences page of Aspen
Production Control Web Server now include locale regions, each one identified
by a specific Locale ID. They provide added flexibility for how dates and
numbers are formatted for a particular language.
Previously, 10 main language options were available—each providing only one
formatting method. Now, if you select "Custom" as the Language preference
and enter a Locale Id, you have 58 options.
Two example Locale IDs—each showing the language, locale region, date
formatting, and decimal separator—are as follows:
Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes 11
fr-FR: French (France) fr-CH: French (Switzerland)
dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm:ss / , dd.MM.yyyy HH:mm:ss / .
For full details, see the Help topics "User Preferences Page" and "Custom
Language Preferences - Locale IDs," in the Aspen Production Control Web
Server WebHelp.

Aspen DMCplus Builder
Loss of precision occurs when copying a
ramp curve
CQ00040936
When you copy a ramp curve from an output model into an assembled model,
there is some loss of precision in the final slope. This issue is similar to a
previous known issue that was fixed in 2.0 (WPAN46NUSW), but it only
affects ramps, and, in this case, the loss of precision is not as severe.
Aspen Nonlinear Controller
Builder
Changing physical limits changes tuning
CQ00054585
Tuning parameters that are in Engineering Units, such as Equal Concern
Errors, are internally stored as a percentage of the Physical Range. Changing
Upper or Lower Limits will change the values of these tuning parameters.
Physical limits should be set up at the beginning of the project and represent
the lowest and highest values that can possibly be achieved by the variable.
Aspen Process Controller
Revised "ServiceRequest" and
"ServiceStatus" entry values in Aspen
Process Controller applications, as of
version V7.2
As of version V7.2 and later of Aspen Process Controller (APC), the numeric
values 0, 1, and 2 are changed, as follows, for the ServiceRequest and
ServiceStatus entries for input and output variables in an APC application:
Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes 21
In V7.1 and earlier:
0 - OFF: Do not use the variable for prediction or control.
1 - PREDICTION: Use the variable for prediction only, so it is included in
Controller calculations, but is excluded from controlling plant regulatory
systems.
2 - CONTROL: Use for prediction and control (not available for
feedforward variables).
In V7.2 and later:
0 - OFF: Do not use the variable for prediction or control.
1 - ON: Use for prediction and control.
2 - PREDICTION: Use the variable for prediction only, so it is included in
Controller calculations, but is excluded from controlling plant regulatory
systems (manipulated variables only).
This change can affect users who are updating between the version ranges
listed above, and have one or more external applications that use expected
numeric values provided as data output from APC applications.
MasterOnOffRequest may be turned OFF by
controller
There are certain conditions where the MasterOnOffSwitch and
MasterOnOffStatus can be set to OFF by the controller:
If the MasterOnOffStatus is ON and there is no MV in 'Control' (due to
service request, service status, or loop status), then the
MasterOnOffRequest switch will be turned OFF and an appropriate error
message logged.
If the MasterOnOffStatus is OFF and the MasterOnOffRequest is ON, the
controller will not turn ON unless there is at least one MV that can be
controlled.
Aspen Process Statistical
Analyzer
Q Stat and T Square features fail to work
after outlier deletion
The Q Stat and T Square features can fail to work after the Clean button has
been executed in the multivariate statistical analysis.
Workaround
To circumvent this, save the file (after cleaning) by using File | Save Data to
MATLAB File menu command, and then reload. Then run the multivariate
statistical analysis feature again.

Aspen Production Control Web
Server
Java™ (JRE) prerequisite for Web Server
installation
Installation of Aspen Production Control Web Server V8.7 requires that the
following third-party software be installed as a prerequisite:
32-bit (i.e., Windows x86 or i586) Java version 7 update 45 (JRE 7u45) or
later version.
Workaround
1 From www.java.com, click "Free Java Download."
(For offline environments, where no Internet connection is available, see
Notes below.)
2 For downloading, select the 32-bit (Windows x86 or i586), latest version.
Notes:
During installation, always clear check boxes that include "Optional 3rd
Party Installations."
To complete the JRE installation in an environment where there is no
Internet connection, you can obtain the "Windows Offline (32-bit)"
installation file for Java on a separate computer that has an Internet-
connection. Look for the offline installation file in the www.java.com page
for "Java Downloads for All Operating Systems."
When the JRE installation is complete, verify that it is installed by
inspecting the Windows Control Panel. The Windows Control Panel should
include a Java (32-bit) applet.
Installing APC Web Server on non-C: drive
causes Web Data Provider Service failure
CQ00553472
If APC Web Server and Aspen Local Security are installed on a drive other
than the default C: drive, it results in the Web Data Provider Service failing to
locate Aspen Local Security records that list authorized users.
After the installation is completed and the server is reboooted, the Windows
Event Log will include an Error log record for aspenapcweb indicating
"Failed to start WebDataProvider service..." Also, the server administrator
may encounter numerous difficulties while attempting to complete various
post-installation configurations.
Each user who attempts to log on to APC Web Server will be denied access.
Instead, each user will be greeted with an error message stating "Your
session failed to start..." and "The Aspen ACP Web Data Provider Service was
unable to validate the current user."
Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes 23
Workaround
The APC Web Server administrator must manually configure folder security
permissions that are missing if installation of APC Web Server (including
Aspen Local Security) was specified for a drive other than the C: drive.
1 Use Windows File Explorer to locate the following file folder:
<X:>\Program Files (x86)\Local Security\Access97
...where <X:> is the non-C: drive where APC Web Server was
installed.
Right-click the folder to display its Properties dialog box, Security tab.
2 Add the following groups to the Group or user names list and, for each
added group, enable Full Control permissions:
o Everyone
o IUSR
o NETWORK SERVICE
o IIS_USRS (<HostName>\IIS_USRS)
3 After you finish adding the groups listed in step 2, verify that the
completed Group or user names list includes all of the following groups,
and the following groups have Full Control permissions set for the folder:
o Everyone
o IUSR
o SYSTEM
o NETWORK SERVICE
o Administrators (<HostName>\Administrators)
o IIS_USRS (<HostName>\IIS_USRS)
4 Reboot the server, and verify that the Aspen APC Web Provider Data
Service has started.
Permission denied message when saving a
plot
When using the High Performance Trends (HPT) to save a plot, you may
receive a "permission denied" message if your logon account does not have
write permissions to the folders where plot files are saved on the web server.
Workaround
The APC Web Server administrator must configure folder security permissions
for the following two file folders on the APC Web Server:
C:\inetpub\wwwroot\AspenTech\Web21\Plots
This Plots folder is visible to all APC Web Server users. It is automatically
created during APC Web Server installation so that HPT plot files can be
saved here.
Right-click the folder, and from the Properties dialog box, Security tab,
change the folder security to allow Full Control for either a group of
users or specific users as needed.
24 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes
You can also allow Full Control for the "Authenticated Users" group.
This provides folder access to a wider range of users, but is less secure.
Note: The "Authenticated Users" group can be added to the Group or
user names list if you click the Edit... button under the Group or user
names list, and access the Advanced dialog boxes to search for the
"Authenticated Users" group in the Location that is the local machine.
C:\inetpub\wwwroot\AspenTech\Web21\WebControls\Plots
This file folder, and the subfolders automatically created within it, are
visible to individual APC Web Server users.
You will need to create this particular Plots folder before you can set the
folder security permissions.
After you create the folder, set its folder security permissions as described
above.
Important: If you perform the above steps locally on the APC Web Server
machine, then use the Run as administrator command to start the web
browser before you try to verify the success of adding the Plots folders
security permissions.
Some applications with the same name do
not appear
If different types of applications are identically named and hosted on the
same online applications server (for example, an Aspen IQ application and an
Aspen DMC controller both named "ABC"), then only one of the applications
will appear in Aspen Production Control Web Server pages.
This is a limitation of the web repository, which uniquely identifies
applications by host and name. Therefore, only the first application reported
is displayed, and the second one is ignored.
Workaround
Ensure that all applications hosted on a single online applications server
are uniquely named, regardless of application type.
If identical naming is necessary, then place the applications on separate
servers.
No search results from High Performance
Trend (HPT) search feature
If no results are shown for the Type-ahead or Search features of the High
Performance Trends (which is used in various History tab dialogs for Aspen
Watch plots), the search database may need populating.
See the procedure in the Aspen Production Control Web Server WebHelp
topic "Configuration Tab" | "Supporting Dialog Boxes" | "IP.21 HPT
Search Data Management - Dialog Box".
Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes 25
Plots not showing when "Enforce single-
window environment" is enabled
The User Preferences option to Enforce single-window environment in
Aspen Production Control Web Server supports environments where pop-up
windows are not allowed. (The option is a new feature, added in V8.4.)
When the Enforce single-window environment option is enabled, Aspen
Production Control Web Server uses hovering frames within the main window
to display all pop-up content.
A conflict occurs when the Compatibility View feature of Internet Explorer
(IE) prevents certain combinations of plot type and single window mode
settings from functioning correctly.
The conflict may also occur when the User Preferences option to Use High
Performance Trends (HPT) is enabled. (The option is a new feature, added
in V8.4.1 to improve the display of graphic plots in history and history details
pages that originate from Aspen Watch Performance Monitor applications. It
represents an advancement over the legacy method of using ActiveX plots.)
Workaround
The following table shows valid combinations of enabling or disabling Enforce
single-window environment, Use High Performance Trends (HPT), and
the Compatibility View browser setting:
Enforce single-window Use High Performance
environment Trends (HPT) IE Compatibility View
ON ON (HPT plots) OFF only
ON OFF (ActiveX plots) ON only
OFF ON OFF or ON
OFF OFF OFF or ON
Internet Explorer display issues and
resolutions
The following display issues may occur when using Internet Explorer 10 (or
later version) to view Aspen Production Control Web Server web pages and
WebHelp:
ISSUE: If Compatibility View is enabled, then proper formatting of plotting
web pages is lost.
Workaround
Verify that Compatibility View is disabled for the Aspen Production Control
Web Server web site:
1 From the main menu of Internet Explorer 10, click Tools | Compatibility
View Settings.
2 In the Compatibility View Settings dialog, ensure the check box is
cleared for Display intranet sites in Compatibility View.
26 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes
3 Also, in the Compatibility View Settings dialog, ensure the Aspen
Production Control Web Server web site is not listed in Websites you've
added to Compatibility View.
If APC Web Server is on Windows Server
2012, History plots from Aspen Watch
applications may not display
If Aspen Production Control Web Server V8.7 is hosted on Windows Server
2012, History plots do not display if the following situations exist:
The client web browser is an earlier version than Internet Explorer 9
(IE9).
-or-
The client web browser is IE9 (or later), but the Use High Performance
Trends (HPT) option is disabled in the User Preferences page of Aspen
Production Control Web Server V8.7.
Note: By default, the HPT option is enabled when Aspen Production
Control Web Server detects a compatible web browser.
In the Windows Server 2012 environment, the Remote Data Server (RDS)
component, traditionally used to receive data for rendering Aspen Watch
History plots, is no longer supported by the operating system.
To address this issue, High Performance Trends (HPT) functionality,
introduced in V8.4.1 of Aspen Production Control Web Server, replaces the
RDS and ActiveX method formerly used for rendering History plots.
Workaround
If you require display of Aspen Watch Performance Monitor applications (and,
particularly, the History plots), then do the following:
Ensure that Aspen Production Control Web Server is V8.7, client web
browsers are HPT-compatible (IE9 or later), and client web browsers have
the Use High Performance Trends (HPT) option enabled in the User
Preferences page.
-or-
Ensure that Aspen Production Control Web Server is installed on Windows
Server 2008.
Note: This issue only applies to Aspen Production Control Web Server V8.7.
It does not apply to Aspen Watch Performance Monitor Server V8.7, which
operates correctly on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 or Windows Server 2012
R2.
Adaptive Modeling Dataset Viewer displays
previous version cases incorrectly
In version V8.0.1, the format of the historical data used for Adaptive Modeling
Identification (ID) cases was changed. As a result, after a cumulative patch
Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes 27
or later version (V8.0.1, V8.0.2, or V8.4) is installed, the Dataset Viewer
page (which is accessed from the Modeling page in the History tab) displays
incorrectly when it is used to display data from previous-version Adaptive
Modeling ID cases.
Workaround
If you are working with historical data that was recorded with version V8.0 or
earlier, then, after installing a patch or version that is V8.0.1 or later, rerun
all existing, previous-version Adaptive Modeling Identification (ID) cases.
WARNING: Network Card Configuration
issues
The most common cause of intermittent communication loss between the
machine hosting Aspen Production Control Web Server and the online
applications servers is an incorrectly configured Network Interface Card (NIC).
Workaround
For V7.2 and later, leave the default setting for duplex/speed (Auto or
AutoDetect). It is best to let the NIC negotiate the duplex/speed settings.
Check this on both the Aspen Production Control Web Server computer
and on all Online host computers that connect to it.
For multiple NICs, use "Teaming" mode. Also ensure that the teaming
software uses a "virtual NIC" configuration, so that the team appears as a
single MAC address and IP address. If a Network Connection needs to be
disabled, Use the Network settings in Windows to Disable it (don't just
disconnect the cable).
Disable the option for Windows to "allow the computer to turn off the
device to save power."
If you are seeing strange behavior that appears to be network-related, try
re-installing or updating the network driver software for your computer.
This simple step has solved many unusual issues that have been
encountered by Aspen Support.
Slow log-on and navigation performance
If the logon time when accessing PCWS seems slow, see AspenTech Support
solution 120891.
Web site access error message occurs
If you encounter the error message "The page cannot be displayed" in
Internet Explorer, verify that the IIS Admin Service and the World Wide
Web Publishing Service are started, by using the Services dialog box from
the Administrative Tools.
Additionally, ensure that the Default Web Site is running. You can do this
from the Internet Services Manager by navigating to, and right-clicking, the
"Default Web Site" node and selecting Start if the option is enabled (the
option is disabled if it is already running).
28 Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes
Web pages do not display correctly or
appear to be missing content
It may be necessary to delete the Temporary Internet files on your client
computer before the new web pages will display correctly, especially after you
have upgraded from a previous installation. (Certain files are cached on the
client computer and need to be removed so the new files will be used in their
place.)
Workaround
In Internet Explorer, navigate to the web page that exhibits the error, and
refresh the web page as follows:
While holding down the CTRL key, press the F5 key.
Aspen SmartStep Online
Test service switch impacts proposed
moves for control mode in open loop
An open loop tester will typically show the proposed moves it would make had
the tester been ON at the current cycle. If the test group is in test mode, then
a proposed test move will be shown. If the test group is in control mode, then
the proposed control moves should be shown. If an MV test service switch
(STMVSRV) is OFF and the test group is in control mode, then the MV will be
assumed to be OFF for the control calculation, and the open loop proposed
moves will be misleading. To see proposed control moves when the loop is
closed and the test group is in CONTROL, ensure that all of the test switches
are ON.
Aspen Watch Server
Model Verification aborts with error code 2
If a Model Verification Case (submitted from the Web interface) aborts with
error code 2, check to see if Aspen DMCplus Simulate (on the Aspen Watch
Server PC) can successfully open and acquire a license within three seconds.
If needed, use the SLM Configuration Wizard to select a specific license server
for Aspen DMCplus Desktop (do not use the broadcast option). If this appears
not to be the problem, make sure you have run the Install Database
Configuration command file that sets permissions for this simulation server.
Aspen Manufacturing Suite Advanced Process Control V8.7 Release Notes 29
TSK_IQn task fails to start
You may receive an error when starting a database for one of the TSK_IQn
tasks.
Workaround
Use Windows Task Manager to check for one of the following processes, and
terminate it:
PerformAnalysis.exe
SimDriver.exe
PIDWatch.exe
Then restart the database.
Simulation task may fail to complete and
block any new request
CQ00102496
The Model Verification simulation task may fail to complete in some
situations. These situations include:
The computer is rebooted before the Model Verification job is completed.
The CCF is corrupted and cannot be loaded.
The CCF content does not match the MDL content.
When this occurs, the status of the current simulation case will show
Running and will remain that way. As the result, the case will not be
completed, and no new case can be requested.
Workaround
Perform the following steps to restore the functionality:
1 Access the Windows Task Manager dialog box (press CTRL + ALT +
DEL, and then click Task Manager...).
Then stop the following, related processes:
o simulate.exe
o SimDriver.exe
2 Change the case status from Running to Aborted by following these
steps:
o Open InfoPlus.21 Administrator.
o Locate the definition record AW_MDLSIMDEF.
o Find the record corresponding to the hung case.
o Change the value of AW_RECORD_STATUS to Aborted.
3 Resubmit the case using the Aspen Production Control Web Server
History tab.
