DIDACTIC UNIT 11: DELICIOUS!

Centre of interest: knowing facts about food and healthy eating.

Duration: 7 sessions of 60 minutes.

Teaching objectives:

o To recognize and produce vocabulary related to food, tastes and typical dishes in
the UK and in Spain.
o To talk about plans and future intentions.
o To reflect on the future and talk about predictions.
o To practise expressing spontaneous decisions.
o To understand and participate in dialogues to order food and drink.
o To revise the use of pronouns to avoid repetition in writing
o To learn about food habits in different cultures.

Basic competences:

o Competence in communication with language, in describing food habits, talking


about plans, making predictions on the future and participating in dialogues to
order food in a restaurant.
o Social and civic competence, by ordering food properly and politely, by
respecting turns and by showing a supportive attitude in the presentation of
works and performances in the classroom.
o Competence in personal autonomy and initiative, as well as entrepreneurship,
by showing personal creativity in the production of oral and written texts and by
sharing responsibilities and contributing with their own ideas in collaborative
works.

Contents:

 Block 1. Listening, speaking and conversing:


o To understand general and specific information from oral dialogues related to
food.
o To listen and practise the pronunciation of contracted forms.
o To reproduce a dialogue to order food and drink in a restaurant.
o To ask for and give information about one’s eating habits.
o To talk about plans, intentions and predictions on the future.
 Block 2. Reading and writing:
o To read for specific and general information about typical dishes and plans for a
party.
o To write questions to complete an interview with a futurologist.
o To write an email talking about plans by using pronouns to avoid repetition.
 Block 3. Knowledge of the language.
* Linguistic knowledge:
o To use vocabulary related to food, drink, tastes and meals.
o To distinguish the use of “Be Going to” and “Will” for plans, intentions and
predictions related to the future.
o To distinguish the pronunciation of the contracted forms of “will” and “will not”
(‘ll / won’t).
* Learning to learn:
o To pay attention to contextual elements to guess rules and infer information
o To create a dictionary for self-study compiling new vocabulary, new rules for
pronunciation and new structures and functions.
o To compare equivalent forms used to express future in English and Spanish.
 Block 4. Socio-cultural Knowledge.
o To show respect and interest for English speaking countries’ diet.
o To identify food and drink and typical dishes that contributes to a balanced and
varied diet.
o To use linguistic formula to show an appropriate level of politeness and
formality according to the context.

Interdisciplinary links:

o Natural Sciences, by recognizing categories of food as basic requirements for


life and their incorporation into a varied diet for appropriate growth.

Values:

o Heath education, by providing material that encourages keeping a healthy


lifestyle by means of a balanced diet and daily physical activity.

Evaluation criteria:

* Objectives:
o Using “Be Going to” to express plans and intentions for the future with
precision.
o Using “Will” correctly in making predictions for the future and expressing
spontaneous decisions.
o Using as much vocabulary as necessary to talk about food habits and to provide
some details about some typical dishes from English speaking countries.
o Reproducing dialogues to order food and drink in a restaurant by imitating
written and oral models without major mistakes.
o Using pronouns with precision to avoid repeating nouns and names in written
productions.
* Competences:
o Showing interest during their classmates’ presentations to contribute with votes
for the best works in the classroom.
o Contributing with personal ideas in the elaboration of a typical Andalusian
menu and the recreation of a simple dialogue ordering food from the menu in a
role play.
