Backround Introduction

Personality refers to enduring patterns of behavior that distinguish individuals. Theories of personality have defined it as the integration of parts of the mind (Freud) or the dynamic organization within a person that determines their adjustments to the environment (Allport). Early thinkers like Hippocrates, Plato, and Aristotle proposed that personality types were influenced by factors like temperament and the balance of bodily fluids or humors. Later theorists like Gall and Sheldon studied links between personality and brain structures or body types. A personality theory consists of related assumptions that allow hypotheses to be logically deduced and tested. Theories can be developed through deductive or inductive reasoning and take a multidisciplinary approach.
