Introduction to Leadership
God has ordained that all of His Children are to be leaders. Consider the
following scriptures
Matthew 5:14
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid”
Light reveals. Light gives clarity. Light gives direction. Light defines. Light
stands for leadership.
Matthew 28:18-19
And Jesus came and spake unto them saying, All power is given unto me in
heaven and in earth. Go therefore and teach all nations…
Naturally speaking also, everyone has the potentials to lead in natural things,
Sociologists tell us that even the most introverted individual will influence ten
thousand other people during his or her lifetime! This goes therefore to show
that each one of us is both influencing and being influenced by others. That
means that all of us are leading in some ways, and in some other ways, we are
being led. No one is exempted from being a leader or a follower.
Everything God has accomplished in the world aside creation, He has done
through men yielded to Him through whom He provides leadership to others.
When God wanted to make humanity, He simply made Adam and left with him
the responsibility to reproduce and replenish the earth. When God wanted to
raise a people through whom the world will be saved, He picked Abraham.
When God wanted to save the people from the flood, He chose Noah. When
God wanted to save Israel from Egypt, He raised Moses. When God wanted to
give the world eternal life, He gave us Jesus. Jesus Himself gave us the Apostles
and till today, He still gives us ministry gifts that continues to provide
leadership in the church. God does His work through men whom He uses to
provide leadership for others.
2 Timothy 2:2
And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same
commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
“Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
Many who occupy leadership positions believe that their leadership should be
measured by how many people look up to or depend on them. They boast of
being in great demand by so many followers for so long. But that is a failed
leadership.
Hebrews 5:12
For when for the time you ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you
again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such
as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
The true leader measures his success and effectiveness by the diminishing
degree of the dependency of his followers. Effective leadership makes itself
increasingly unnecessary. The very fact that Jesus left before even the disciples
began ministry proves that He had provided excellent leadership.
Character Qualification
Leaders must demonstrate their commitment to the highest ideals and principles
of the word of God. Never compromising the standards of truth, honesty and
integrity in all walks of life. A leader must not allow himself be given to
indulgences or secret lifestyle that would undermine his character or mar his
public witness. He must be above reproach.
Every time you‟re put in a position of responsibility, you automatically become
a target for temptation. When you become a leader, you are put in a highly
visible position and you become attractive to many interests. If you want to be a
leader and you cannot control your passions, you have to wait and get trained
and discipline yourself.
Intellectual Qualification
True leaders are constantly reaching for more knowledge. If you desire to
become an effective leader, you must give yourself to study and never graduate
from the University of Life. Any effective teacher is a deep and continuous
learner. They continually discover that all they know is what they have learnt
and all they have learnt is not all there is to know. True leaders initiate their
own learning.
Mastery and absolute competence is non-negotiable for a leader, therefore he
must have passion for more knowledge.
Emotional Qualification
A leader must have his emotions in check. He must not act by impulse of based
on emotions or the rave of the moment. This is why patience will be a very
important virtue for a leader. There will always be situations that will scare
others, challenges of life will come to him just as much as they come to those he
leads, and even probably more, but he must remain composed because of his
knowledge and faith in God‟s word, so that he can truly be a leader to his
people as they will need his strength to draw from and be encouraged.
Spiritual Qualification
The leader must have answers or know how to get his answers. Of what use is a
leader who is as confused as the people he leads? A leader who does not know
how to persevere in prayer, who does not know how to wait on the Lord with
fasting, who does not know the rudiments of Bible study, who does not know
hoe to exercise his faith independently and does not know how to hear from
God himself, how will he lead God‟s people successfully?
THE SUBJECT OF LOYALTY
If such are allowed to thrive in the church, they will wreck havoc and such a
church cannot stand.
1 Corinthians 4:2
Moreover, it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful.
2 Samuel 9:1
And David said, is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I
may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?
Such acts of loyalty are loved and appreciated by everyone and people are
more inclined to follow such demonstration of character and loyalty.
A leader must also show his loyalty by being loyal to his spouse and
being committed to their marriage. Marriage is a real test of ones
leadership, commitment and loyalty, so if your followers see that
example, it ministers same to them.
1 Timothy 3:2,4,5
A bishop must be blameless, the HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE, vigilant,
sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach; One that
RULETH WELL HIS OWN HOUSE, having his children with all gravity;
(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care
of the church of God?)
A leader must also be loyal to his own vision. A person who comes from
time to time to change what he said God told him cannot be trusted.
Nobody wants to follow an unpredictable and continually changing
leader, who changes his vision always.
Proverbs 24:21
My son, fear thou the Lord and the king: and meddle not with them that
are given to change.
A leader breeds loyalty in his followers by being loyal to God. Like
attracts likes. A leader who is disloyal to the revealed word of God and
clearly written scriptures will breed followers who are disloyal to him and
all forms of godly authority.
If you want your ministry to be marked by much loyal men and women serving
faithfully and doing their best to serve the course of the gospel and the vision
God has committed to you, then you must have a system that encourages and
celebrates faithfulness and loyalty. Whatever happens at the top will be
cascaded through the ranks – loyalty or disloyalty.
Matthew 6:22-24
The light of the body is the eye. If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body
shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of
darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that
darkness!
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the
other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve
God and mammon.
Notice Jesus says “if your eye is single, your whole body is full of light…” then
He gives the opposite of that case and instead of Him to say, “but if your eye be
double” or “if your eye be multiple” or “if your eye be divided”, He rather says
“But if your eye be EVIL, your body will be full of darkness”.
So, from Jesus‟ statement, we see that the opposite of a “single eye” is an “evil
eye” in the same way that the opposite of light is darkness.
No one can have dual commitments and still be said to be loyal. Loyalty
requires or rather, demands a full and complete commitment to a course without
turning back. Once you are loyal to your wife and some other woman
somewhere else outside your home, it ceases to be loyalty. Once you are faithful
to your husband MOST OF THE TIME, it ceases to be faithfulness at all.
Loyalty demands full devotion and total commitment.
Another example is the local assembly you are loyal to i.e the church you are
committed to. You can‟t be committed to two churches. If you say you belong
to a church, then your allegiance must be to that church, her leadership and your
pastor. You must see one person as your pastor and your church as your only
church, fully involved in it. You cease to do your own thing outside what your
local assembly is doing. You learn to sink your opinions into the cooperate
decision and run as one body with the other brethren and pastor. Don‟t forget,
loyalty has a single eye.
Your allegiance, your commitment, your loyalty must not be divided.
2 Samuel 1:1-17,20
Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the
slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag; It came
even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from
Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he
came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance. And David said
unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of
Israel am I escaped. And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray
thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and
many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are
dead also. And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest
thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead? And the young man that told him
said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon
his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. And
when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered,
Here am I. And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an
Amalekite. He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me:
for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me. So I stood
upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he
was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that
was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord. Then David took
hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:
And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan
his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because
they were fallen by the sword. And David said unto the young man that told
him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an
Amalekite. And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth
thine hand to destroy the LORD'S anointed? And David called one of the young
men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died. And
David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified
against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD'S anointed. And David lamented
with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:
Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of
the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.
If you‟re loyal to someone, you cover their mistakes and never discuss their
mistakes to strangers or his enemies. You believe his heart is right but only
made a momentary mistake. You take decisions for his best interest even if he
will never learn of it forever. This is true loyalty. This is how God expects us to
be loyal to our brethren, to our church and to our pastor.
5. Loyalty is constant.
What if the object of our loyalty changes, stops being loyal to us and walks
away from the principles of what is good and right?
Well, loyalty doesn‟t forget past favours and although may not have the access
to the former, it never judges by the present wrongs while forgetting the past.
Loyalty remembers past favour it enjoyed and keeps blessing back for that
reason alone. But it does not keep record of wrongs done. A person who leaves
a marriage, a church, a company, a friendship and all he talks about the past
they shared is the soured stuffs, he is a disloyal person. Be careful with disloyal
people. You‟re not perfect yourself, when you fall out of favour with them, they
will treat you same way they have treated others.
7. Loyalty never forgets past favour and yet doesn‟t keep record of wrong
things done in the past – Easily forgives.
When, for instance, you see a man of God who ministers in a powerfully
anointed way, you may become confused if a disloyal friend of his has said
some bad things about him in your hearing. “How could God still use a man like
this?” you might be wondering. Your confusion will essentially cut you off
from being blessed by his ministry. What you heard about him has affected you
receiving. Whereas, the truth is God only used imperfect vessels. You miss out.
A loyal person keeps honouring even when a mistake has been made. Think
about someone who used to drink from a pool that took care of his thirst and
others too. Then one day, he decides that he doesn‟t want to drink from the pool
anymore for some reasons and instead of him to simply walk away, he decides
to urinate in it so that no one would benefit from it anymore. Who would want
to drink from a pool or pond after perceiving the smell of urine in it? This is
how disloyal people are in essence, they leave a church, and instead of leaving
peacefully and let everyone else be, they would rather try to destroy what God
is doing there and destroy peoples trust toward that ministry and the man of
God.
If you are the leader of a ministry, keep no shady part. If things happen that
need explanation, please clearly explain. Clear explanation is the antidote to
suspicions and confusions that anyone may cast in people‟s minds. Secrecy is
the breeding ground for disloyal people to sow the seeds of suspicion and
confusion in the heart of the followers.
Moses was surprised to see people coming out to rebel. The bible says among
them were famous and renown men – two hundred and fifty of them.
…two hundred and fifty PRINCES of the assembly, famous in the congregation,
MEN OF RENOWN… Numbers 16:2
It is clear these people felt they were important and indispensable. It is when
people begin to let such get into their head that they become rebellious. It is
pride that makes people disloyal and rebellious. You only rebel against a person
when you think you are as good as or even better than him. This is just what
they said to Moses “why do you make yourself different from us?” they felt
they should be equal to him.
“Why do you lift yourself against the congregation of the Lord?” Numbers 16:3
This was their accusation. God Himself ordained Moses their leader.
They had forgotten it was Moses, not them, whom God used to deliver them
from Egypt with mighty miracles. Disloyalty is dishonor. Dishonor forgets.
Rebellious people often forget whom they are dealing with. They forget that the
man they speak against has God‟s hand on him and how that he has been a
blessing to them severally in the past.
Moses sent for Dathan and Abiram, leader of the reform, rebel movement and
they sent a rude reply back to Moses “we will not come. Who do you think you
are to call us?” “You better come yourself if you want to talk to us”. Something
they couldn‟t say to Moses before (Numbers 16:12).
A spirit of pride had taken over them at their invitation. They now see
themselves equal to Moses. No one is equal to anyone. God made us all
different. Whether you like to accept it or not, some people are ahead of you
and some are behind.
You need to realize this: God is against any form of rebellion against
constituted authority whether spiritual or natural or civil, according to
scriptures, unless they rebel against the truth themselves openly. Rebellion is a
road that always ends in destruction.
Numbers 16:28-33
And Moses said, Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all
these works; for I have not done them of mine own mind. If these men die the
common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men;
then the LORD hath not sent me. But if the LORD make a new thing, and the
earth open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them,
and they go down quick into the pit; then ye shall understand that these men
have provoked the LORD. And it came to pass, as he had made an end of
speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them:
And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their houses, and
all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. They, and all that
appertained to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon
them: and they perished from among the congregation.
Do not allow pride lead you into the road of disloyalty and rebellion which ends
in destruction.
Ephesians 4:3
Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
1. A leader who „corrects‟ his head pastor‟s teachings in his absence and
teaches a different doctrine to those entrusted to him in his leadership
capacity.
A disloyal person always holds his opinions higher than and seeks to push it
down to those committed to his trust. His heart is clearly not one with the senior
pastor of the ministry. Scriptures teach to mark those and stay away from them.
They cause divisions in the church.
Romans 16:17
Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences
contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
2. A leader who thinks too much is being spent on the head and questions
how much honour he should receive.
When a person is unwilling to contribute or give to or take care of the pastor, he
has the spirit of Judas Iscariot who said what was given to Jesus was too
expensive to be given to him. Such a person can betray you because he never
thinks you are worth much. Such are disloyal men.
John 12:5-6
Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had
the bag, and bare what was put therein.
Revelation 21:5
…he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful
The truth is, no true pastor is doing the work he does because he is the best that
could have done it. He is only doing it because God put him there. Everyone in
the church should dwell in peace with that. It is God‟s choice we are in
ministry.
1 Corinthians 12:28
And God hath set some in the church…
Matthew 6:21
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
2 Samuel 1:20
Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of
the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.
10.A leader who is not accountable to the leadership and authority of the
church
A leader who believes how he lives his life is his affair alone and nobody‟s
business. Who is not consistent in submitting his ministerial reports, or runs a
shady business, or has a secret marriage of love affair, or travels constantly
without informing his leaders and has a lifestyle of secrecy to the church. The
epistles have many instructions concerning the personal life of church members
and no believer lives or dies to himself. We are all responsible to each other.
11.A leader who makes friends with those who are clearly against you or
your ministry
A leader who enjoys the company of those who hate or have no regard for you
or your ministry definitely feels same way about you. His heart is with them,
not with you. Such people should be removed from your team with an
immediate effect.
12.A leader who keeps making reference to his former ministry and doesn‟t
want to be retrained in ministry
A person who always says “In my former church we did this that way and that
this way” has not truly left their former church. They want to make this church
into their former church and if you permit that, they will leave again for the
same reason they left their former church. Such people should be watched.
Every church is different and has a unique vision within the vision of Christ and
so each one will have different patterns, systems and operation. Any one who
joins the team of the church should leave their old church behind and match
forward with the present church.
13.A leader who argues or react angrily when the head corrects them
A head leader will often have to correct his subordinates. In the church, there
will be occasions where an erring person must be corrected as the scriptures
instruct. But when a person get angry or offended when corrected, it shows
where their heart truly is. A true student will never feel insulted or irritated
when reproved.
Ecclesiastes 4:13
Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more
be admonished.
1 Kings 1:5
…Adonijah…exalted himself, saying, I will be king…
15.A leader who secretly supports someone the head rebuked for his wrong
When a person is rebuked or corrected for a wrong, watch out for those who go
around to support him and insinuating that it was wrong and unjust for him to
have been rebuked. Such people are disloyal, dangerous and a threat to the unity
of the church. The whole church is expected to stay on the side of the leadership
of the church in correcting an erring brother, not take his side.
2 Thessalonians 3:14
And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no
company with him, that he may be ashamed. Yet count him not as an enemy, but
admonish him as a brother.
16.A leader who does not follow instructions and „adjusts‟ the instructions of
his pastor to his own small group.
If the church trusted a leader well enough to put him in charge of an aspect of
the church, he is expected to be faithful and serve for the purpose and common
good of the church, not to create a faction. Adjusting an instruction given by the
lead pastor of the church is wicked thing to do. It is one of the most obvious
signs of a disloyal person.
17.A leader who finds it hard to quote his pastor or publicly honour him.
When a leader finds it hard to tell those who listen to him that he learnt this or
that from his pastor, when he finds it hard to quote his pastor‟s words verbatim
or to publicly honour him, he is not to be trusted, such people most likely have
other allegiances.
2 Timothy 1:8
Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his
prisoner…
18.A leader who does not pray for or give materially to his pastor
Paul severally encouraged the brethren to pray for him in all the churches he
wrote to. This is so because that is a sterling character of a loyal person.
1 Thessalonians 5:25
Brethren, pray for us.
