Learning Experiences

Co-curriculum Project is a course subject where I can learn how and what are the stages of the project. Firstly,

the group has to be formed and select the committee members such as leader, secretary, treasurer, coordinators.

Conduct a meeting and proposed a project plan with the objective defined. At first the project plan is cleaning

beach at Queensbay Mall Penang, but due to increasing covid 19 cases at Bayan Lepas, we decided to change

the plan to Walkway Cleaning Project for Karpal Singh Drive. From the project selecting process, I learn that

selecting the suitable project is very important so that we can work as a team to achieve the goals and benefited

others.

We learned how to choose a cost-effective project which involved every group member. Walkway cleaning

makes me aware that it is important to keep the walkway clean and healthy, free from pollution. And the

importance of maintain cleanliness of environment for the sake of pedestrians. The aim of this project is to

reduce the amount of litter on walkway and raising awareness of pedestrians regarding the impact of litter on

walkway that will affect safety and tourism view or environment in a negative way. Every group member will

get involved in these activities such as walking along the walkway to pick up all the litter. We also learn how to

dispose different categories of waste in the correct way.

Getting the resources for the project is also one of the skills l have learned. We need to know where and how to

get our resources at a very minimum cost. We were rather lucky; some group members are very supportive by

sponsor thermometer and sanitizer for free of charge. The rest costs of hand gloves, shirt sticker, plates and

green garbage bag were shared equally by all group members that further help reduce financial burden of

everyone. The cost of these activities is minimum because we obtained support and sponsorship. √

After going through many discussions and brainstorming sessions through zoom meeting and WhatsApp

communication channel, finally we plan and decided to carry out Walkway Cleaning Project for Karpal Singh
Drive on Sunday morning of 7a.m to 11a.m during 4 October 2020. From this task, I learned that the co-

ordination and teamwork among the members are very important. We need to encourage and inspire one

another to achieve the target. I learned that in order to perform well as a group, we need to identify the roles for

every member in the group. We need to communicate effectively and appreciate diversity of ideas. As safety

coordinator that take care of safety and security of every group member, I also need to be more tactful by

monitor safety protection of every member effectively from beginning until the end of project by make sure

every group member taking any safety precautions steps and SOP needed during covid 19 diseases. For

example, make sure every group member wearing mask, take and record body temperature of every group

member on a notebook, maintain safety distance from each other and using sanitizers to clean hands after finish

project.

Reflection

Pre project execution

At the beginning, every group member is free to choose which role position to take in project. I offer to be a

safety coordinator that take care of safety and security of every group member. As a safety coordinator, my

responsibility is to be more tactful by monitor safety protection of every member effectively from beginning

until the end of project by make sure every group member taking any safety precautions steps and SOP needed

during covid 19 diseases. My tasks including make sure every group member wearing mask, take and record

body temperature of every group member on a notebook, maintain safety distance from each other and using

sanitizers to clean hands after finish project.

I realized that taking any safety precautions steps and SOP needed during covid 19 diseases is one of factors we

need to consider in order to come out with the proposal. It is important to make sure every group member

diseases transmitted. After submitting the project proposal, we started looking for our resources. We split our

Project execution

During the walkway cleaning session, I learned that the teamwork is very important. For example, one group

member needs to take and open garbage bag widely for other group member throwing rubbish inside garbage

bag. There is such a long walk way that will be difficult to be finished cleaning up by one person, this project

definitely needs a team to carry out. All group members passionate and cooperative to make this happened. The

positive thing about these activities not only a project to cleaning walkway but also build the strength of the

relationship between group members. The best thing during this activity we had fun and enjoy doing it. These

activities enable every group member to show their cooperative and hardworking in picking rubbish.

During the walkway cleaning sessions, I realized that weather is also one of the factors which will affect us

when carrying out the project. Luckily, there is only a bit of cloudy little raining only for a very short period,

the rest time is bright sunny good day. Distribution of tasks among the group members is important as well. We

need to complete our tasks within the scheduled time. Based on schedule we use first half hours from 7 to 7.30

a.m to wait everyone arrive at meeting point of in front of family mart. We then use another half hour from 7.30

a.m to 8 a.m for every group member start eating group prepared breakfast of bihun and sandwich. We then

start walking together from family mart to walkway to completely clean the walkway from 8 a.m to 10.30 am.

While another left last half hour used to discuss individual proposal, distribute tasks of group members for final

project and presentation. We are so lucky as MBPP staffs coincidently clean the walkway at that time also, so

with more people help and experience make our work easier and in order.

Post project execution

The whole point of the project is to deliver everything that we planned, from the result we can say it’s a great

success. The key activities in project achievement are making the walkway clean from litter. We can feel the

satisfaction from the hard work performed. All group members enjoy working as a team happily. We are proud

to make a better place for Karpal Singh Drive walkway visitors and pedestrians to relax and enjoy at the clean

and beautiful beach and walkway. We walked along the walkway beside beach and picked up all the thrash.

The project has created awareness among the public about the importance of keeping a clean and healthy

environment.

We hope that this activity can stir awareness and educate the local community to maintain and sustain a clean

and healthy environment by avoid littering the walkway. I have also learned that everyone has the responsibility

to keep the environment and walkway clean from any pollution and maintain a good environment. Great

teamwork is the most important factor to make all this happen.

I realized that the final report, presentation slides and project preparation also quite challenging. We need to

gather all information, summarize it into the report and slides. The content needs to be checked and edited to

avoid errors and mistakes.
