Activity-1 7

This document appears to be an activity worksheet for students. It contains instructions for 3 experiments on how sound travels through different media (solid, liquid, air) and how temperature affects the speed of sound. The experiments involve tapping spoons on a table and in water, singing with an open/closed mouth and nose, and plotting data on a graph to analyze the relationship between temperature and speed of sound in air. The student is asked to make observations and answer questions at various steps.

Sounds in Different Media

Activity 1.____
Learning Competency: Investigates the effect of temperature to the speed of
sound.

OBJECTIVE: After performing this activity, you should be able to:

infer that sounds can travel through solid, liquid and gas
compare the sounds produced in solid (on the table), in air, and in water;

MATERIALS NEEDED:
2 metal spoons
table
basin with water

PROCEDURE:
A.
1. Place your ear on the table and tap it for three (3) times.
Q1. Is there a produced sound? Write your observations.

2. Place your ear away from the table (approx. 12 inches away) and tap it for three (3) times.
Q2. Is there a produced sound? Write your observations.

Q3. Compare the produced sound in Step 1 and Step 2. Which sound is louder?

B.
1. Fill a large basin with water.
2. Place your ear near the large basin.
3. Clink or strike the two (2) metal spoons for five (5) times.
Q4. Is there a produced sound? Write your observations.

4. Place your ear away (approx. 12 inches away) from the large basin, and clink or strike the two
(2) metal spoons for five (5) times.
Q5. Is there a produced sound? Write your observations.

Q6. Compare the produced sound in Step 3 and 4. Which sound is louder?

C.
1. Using your hand, feel your throat.
2. Try singing your favorite song for ten (10) seconds with an open mouth and nose.
Q7. Is there a produced sound? Write your observations.
3. Repeat Step 2 but with an open mouth and closed nose.
Q8. Is there a produced sound? Write your observations.
4. Repeat Step 2 but with an open nose and closed mouth.
Q9. Is there a produced sound? Write your observations.
Q10. Compare the produced sound in Step 2, 3, and 4.

Generalization:
Compare the sounds produced in solid (on the table), in air, and in water. Is there any
difference? Explain your answer.

Effect of Temperature to Speed of Sound

Activity 1.____
Learning Competency: Investigates the effect of temperature to the speed of
sound.

OBJECTIVE: At the end of this activity, you are expected to determine the effect of temperature on
the speed of sound.

MATERIALS NEEDED:
graphing paper pen ruler

PROCEDURE:
The table below shows the speed of sound in air at various temperatures. Plot the data using your
graphing paper and answer the questions that follow.

ANALYSIS:

1. Based on the graph, what is the relationship of temperature to the speed of sound in air?
2. From your graph, find the interval where the speed of sound at 15°C is located?
3. Extend the line of your graph and find the interval where the speed of sound at 25°C is located.
4. Use your graph to determine how much does the speed of sound change for the given change in
temperature.

GENERALIZATION: How would you relate the air temperature and the speed of sound?
