History of Jet Engines
Dr. Hans von Ohain and Sir Frank Whittle are known to be the co-inventors of the jet
engine although they were working separately. The designer of the first operational
turbojet engine is known to be Von Ohain, but Whittle was the first to register a license
for his prototype. Each of their contributions shaped the jet engine we know today.
Frank Whittle
Sir Frank Whittle was an English aviation engineer and pilot who first considered using
a gas turbine engine to power an aircraft when he was just 22. In January 1930, he
obtained his first turbojet propulsion patent. He started developing his first engine in
1935, which then became a success after being tested on April 1937, demonstrating
effectively the efficacy of the design of the turbojet.
Dr. Hans von Ohain
Hans von Ohain was an aircraft designer who worked for Ernst Heinkel, specializing in
advanced engines, to build the first jet aircraft in the world. He investigated a new type
of aircraft engine that did not require a propeller. He patented a jet propulsion engine
design in 1934, very similar in principle to that of Sir Whittle, but differs in internal
arrangement. He designed a factory-tested demonstration engine in 1937 and a
completely working jet aircraft, the He 178, in 1939.
