Introduction to Visual
Graphic Design

Graphic design can refer to a number of artistic and professional disciplines which
focus on visual communication and presentation. Different techniques are used to create
and combine images and words to create a visual representation of ideas and messages.

We often heard the term Visual Designers and Graphic Designers specifically in the
design industry. These two may sounds similar but they are also different in some ways.

6
Visual Design vs. Graphic Design
Visual design was born out of a mixture of graphic design and user interface design.
It focuses more on the visual appeal of a website or any type of digital design. Visual
Designers intend to answer the question “Does the finished product look good?”.
On the other hand, Graphic design was born of art and technology. As a profession,
it has been around much longer than visual design. Graphic designers started out designing
for print publications like books, magazines, newspapers, brochures and many others. They
are also responsible in creating page layouts, advertisements and even marketing materials.
Graphic designers intend to answer the question” How best to do it?”

HOW GRAPHIC DESIGN STARTED?

Throughout the history, several peoples have filled the needs in giving visual form to ideas
and concepts, store knowledge in graphic form and bring order and clarity to information.
The word “graphic” derives from the ancient Greek word graphein which means “mark-
making” (covers written and drawn marks) while” design” from English to Renaissance word
dessiner to Italian word disegno which means drawing, planning, sketching and designing. In
1922, outstanding book designer William Addison Dwiggins coined the term graphic design
to describe an individual how he organized and managed visuals in his works.
The development of writing and visible language had its earliest origins in simple pictures. Early
people used pictures as a basic way to record and transmit information.

10
A. Before the printing press: Prehistory to Renaissance

• Cave paintings - 38,000 BCE

A high level of observation and memory is evidenced in many prehistoric drawings.

Prehistoric people from Africa, North America and New Zealand left petroglyphs.
Petroglyphs are carved or scratched signs or simple figures on rock that represent ideas
or concepts. Here are some of the creations during those times:

• Sumerians written language - 3300 to 3000 BCE

Sumerians created the first written language as a means of recording trader
inventories to ensure couriers didn’t steal anything on deliveries.

The earliest seals were engraved with Early Egyptian use hieroglyphics or simple

The Egyptians were the first people to produce illustrated manuscripts in which words
and pictures were combined to communicate information. This was the Book of the dead.

B. The birth of Graphic design: Renaissance and Industrial Era

With the arrival of printing press in Europe, people was able to recreate text, art and
design on a great scale and for relatively cheap.

• Invention of the Gutenberg press -1439

Johannes Gutenberg brought movable

type press to Europe that help people not
to rely longer on lengthy scholarly
reproduction of books, opening up
literature and making it affordable to the
masses. This paved way for commercial
uses of design which led in the era of

ideologies in his influential” Thoughts on Design” which largely

D. A glimpse into the digital area

The mass adoption of home computers is a technological advancement in this time.
Mass communication and the accessibility to different art styles and digital software takes
place in creating art methods.

Adobe Photoshop was then released in 1990. The

nature of branding also evolved to meet the changing times.
When internet became famous, trends like flat design which
incorporates bright colors and cartoonish figures has been
visible.

paintings of the prehistoric people to development and use of digital software
was quite impressive. Now, let us review the history of Graphic design by

HOW TO BE A GREAT GRAPHIC DESIGNER

The job of a Graphic designer may be easy but finding a great one can be more
challenging. Here are some of the qualities a great Graphic designer must
possess:

1. Creativity – A Graphic designer must be imaginative. Creative people don’t just

follow the latest trends but they always seek inspiration in everything.
2. Consistency – A Graphic designer must be able to incorporate a brand’s identity
into all new inspiring design and ideas. If the brand identity isn’t clear, he will create a
new one.
3. Problem Solver – A Graphic designer is not afraid of challenges and will most likely
discover new ideas and ask queries that most of us will overlook.
4. Love to Learn – Designing is a lifelong process. A Graphic designer will keep new
developments to get ahead of the latest trends.
5. Able to take Criticism – Everyone has different vision in mind, criticism should not
be taken personally. A Graphic designer will take criticism positively and learn what
works well and what doesn’t work.
6. Patience – Designing can be time consuming. A Graphic designer must have the
patience to continue working on the ideas set by the client. He must give what the
clients want within the given time frame.

When someone gets a Graphic design job, be it a poster design, book design or any
type, he must consider the following things:

1. The objective of the communication

What is the information that needs to be passed on? When the audience reads your
materials (book, webpage or ads) what’s he supposed to get out of it?
The use of visual language as a communication has been an essential tool
throughout the human history. It usually grabs the audience attention and maintain their
motivation to be involved. If the visuals are not properly used, they will be ineffective.

An advertisement (via pikrepo.com) and a newspaper (via guardian.com) have

different objectives of communication.

2. Visual Hierarchy

What needs to be said first and then next and then after that? Designers try to
arrange content so that the highest priority content must be seen first on any given page.
Then, they present the rest of the content from highest to lowest priority.
The way we see information is affected by several factors that contribute to how we
rank the hierarchy of the content within the layout. This will be discussed on the next lesson
about Elements of Design. These are:
• Size • Repetition
• Color • Proximity
• Contrast • White Space
• Alignment • Texture and Style
Every day is a battle to seek people’s attention in a sea of information. Just like a
billboard along the highway. It must capture people’s attention and transmit desired
information at a very fast pace. Thus, each design elements must be considered to produce
effective communication. This will automatically make your viewer’s eye go through the page
in a certain way.

3. Target Audience

Who are you speaking to? Knowing the demographic information and considering the
audience age, gender and most likely what may be appealing to a group that may have any
special interests.

Book cover via Canva.com

4. Tone of voice

Visuals can better resonate with viewers than simply speaking to them. Images can
communicate powerful emotions in a short way that language alone would take much longer
to communicate.

WHAT DOES A GRAPHIC DESIGNERS DO?

18
To be recognize is the end goal of graphic designers. By using different media, they have to
connect a particular idea or identity to be used in the advertising and promotions of product
or services. So what does a Graphic designer develop?
