CO - Earth and Life Science (Detailed Lesson Plan)

The document outlines a detailed lesson plan on genetic engineering. It includes objectives, content, learning resources, procedures, and activities. The procedures section describes the key steps in genetic engineering which are: 1) identification and cutting of the gene segment, 2) making multiple copies of the gene, 3) introduction of the gene into a bacterial plasmid, and 4) production of recombinant DNA. An example provided is the production of human insulin from E. coli bacteria through genetic engineering.

DETAILED LESSON PLAN

In
EARTH AND LIFE SCIENCE
I. OBJECTIVES

A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate understanding of plant and animal reproduction; how
genes work and how genetic engineering is used to produce novel products.

B. Performance Standard The learners shall be able to conduct a survey of products containing substances
that can trigger genetic disorders such as phenylketonuria.

C. Learning The learners describe the process of genetic engineering. (S11/12LT-IIej-

Competencies/Objectives 17)

II. CONTENT Genetic Engineering

III. LEARNING RESOURCES

A. References

1. Teacher’s Guide Pages Teaching Guide for Senior High School –Earth and Life Science. The Commission
on Higher Education in collaboration with the Philippine Normal University, pages
215-218.

2. Learner’s Materials Pages Earth and Life Science Activity Sheet Quarter 2 MELC 4 Week 4 – Genetic
Engineering

3. Textbook Pages

4. Additional Materials from

Learning Resource (LR) Portal

B. Other Learning Resources

IV. PROCEDURES Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Reviewing previous lesson Previously, we have discussed

or presenting a new lesson about the DNA- the genetic
material for all living things.
Being the genetic material, it
carries traits from parents to
offspring.
DNA is helical or spiral.

As a review, how does a DNA

appear?
It is composed of a sugar called deoxyribose, a
What are its components? phosphate group and nitrogenous bases –
adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine.

Very good.

B. Establishing a purpose for Today, we are going to learn

the lesson about the process of genetic
engineering.

C. Presenting Do you know any Yes. (Answers may vary.)

Examples/instances of the superheroes?

What makes them different

They have superpowers.
from other people?

If you are given a chance to be

a superhero, what superpower (Answers may vary.)
would you have and what
changes in your body will you
need?

D. Discussing new concepts Before we go further in our

and practicing new skills #1 discussion, let us first define
the following terms related to
genetic engineering:

Genetic Engineering – it is the

manipulation or change of the
genetic material of an
organism using varied
technologies.

It has applications in medicine,

research, industry and
agriculture, and can be used
on a wide range of plants,
animals and microorganisms.

Specifically, involves the

transfer of genes or parts of
DNA from one organism to
another.

Recombinant DNA - the DNA

that has been changed
through genetic engineering,
and which now contains
genetic material from two
different species

Recombinant Organism - the

organism to which the new
gene has been added,
transgenic organism or
genetically-modified organism
(GMO).

After knowing the definition of

the keywords, the next
question is – Why undergo
genetic engineering?

E. Discussing new concepts Now that we have defined

and practicing new skills #2 these terms, we are going to
proceed with the process of
genetic engineering.

The following are the steps:

1. Identification and Cutting of

Gene Segment

2. Making of Multiple Copies

of the Gene

3. Introduction of the Gene

into a Bacterial Plasmid

4. Production of a
Recombinant DNA

F. Developing Mastery (Lead Based on these descriptions, (Insert illustration)

to Formative Assessment #3 which steps corresponds to
(Two student volunteers will be asked to
the illustration shown?
arrange the steps of the process and present it
in class.)

G. Finding practical Are you familiar with insulin? Yes. (Answers may vary)
applications of concepts and
Did you know that one of the
skills in daily living
first successful applications of
genetic engineering was the
production of human insulin
from the bacterium
Escherichia coli?

Based on the steps in the

process of genetic engineering (Insert flow chart)
presented earlier, can you give
the steps involved in the
production of human insulin
and fill in the flow chart? Step 1 is identification of the human gene
needed by the human body to create insulin.

Step 2 is the creation of the gene in multiple

copies in a laboratory.

Step 3 is the insertion of the gene in the

bacterial plasmid.

Step 4 is the return of the plasmid with

segment of DNA or gene to the bacterium
creating a recombinant bacterium that is able
to produce insulin.

Step 5 is the cloning of the bacterium and the

colony of bacterium formed is placed in
fermentation tanks to produce insulin at a large
scale.

H. Making generalization and As a recap, we have discussed

genetic engineering, terms
abstractions about the lesson
related and the steps involved,
as well as cited some
examples.

What are the key terms

related to genetic Recombinant DNA, Recombinant organism
engineering?

What are the key steps in the 1. Identification and Cutting of Gene Segment
process?
2. Making of Multiple Copies of the Gene

3. Introduction of the Gene into a Bacterial

Plasmid

4. Production of a Recombinant DNA

How does genetic engineering Genetic engineering is helpful in variety of ways
help people and science, in such as in the field of medicine, research,
general? industry and agriculture and can be used on a
wide range of plants, animals and
microorganisms.

I. Evaluating learning Given the following situation,

describe the steps undergone
to produce the genetically
modified organism.

The Philippines has become

the first country to approve
the commercial production of
the nutrient-enriched Golden
Rice.
J. Additional Activities for
Application or Remediation

V. REMARKS

A. No. of Learners who

earned 80% in the evaluation

B. No. of learners who require

additional activities for
Remediation

C. Did the remedial lessons

work? No. of learners who
have caught up with the
lesson

D. No. of learners who

continue to require
remediation
