TITLE: Grade 5 Math

TOPIC: Gives the place value and the value of a digit of a given decimal number through ten

thousandths.

Treatment: Narrative Lecture

RUN TIME: 30 minutes

SCRIPTWRITER: Eunice D. Segdan

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: After this episode the grade 5 learners are expected to

Read and writes decimal number through ten thousandths.

1. OBB.

2. FADE IN TO MEDIUM SHOT, NORMAL ANGLE OF THE TEACHER, TEACHER EUNICE:

3. Good day Grade 5 learners!

4. This is your school on air in Mathematics, I am very glad to be with you for today’s discussion.

5. This is teacher Eunice D. Segdan from Villa Flor Elementary School, SDO Cauayan City.

6. Before we start our lesson, be sure that you have with you your module, pen and

7. Notebook, and you must be in a place where you are comfortable enough for you

8. To be able to focus on our discussion for today.

4. Today’s lesson focuses on the place value and the value of a digit of a given decimal number

through ten thousandths. But before that let us

5. have a short review about your past lesson on reading and writing whole numbers

6. TEXT OVERLAY ABOUT THE REVIEW

7. On your past lesson you have learned about the whole numbers.

8. What do we mean by whole numbers? (pause)

9. It is any numbers that has no fraction no decimal part and no negatives.

10. Let’s answer this activity.

11. INSERT ACTIVITY

Directions: Encircle the whole numbers.

1. (23) (-2) (0) (1) (159)
2. (1/2) (250) (23.5) (-20)
3. (-256) (1/4) (1.34) (100)

12. So in number we encircled 23,0,1 and 159 because they are whole numbers.

13. And for number two and three we have 250 and 100 as our whole numbers

14. The rest are not whole numbers, since they have signs

15. The negative sign, decimal part and fraction.

16. Now let us read the following then try to write it in standard form on your paper.

1. Three thousand eight hundred.

2. One hundred twenty-four thousand.
3. Fifty-two thousand eight hundred ninety-nine.
4. One million five hundred twenty-two thousand one hundred one.
5. Five hundred fifty-five thousand.

17. INSERT ANSWER

1. 3,800
2. 124,000

18. Good job!

19. FADE IN TO MEDIUM SHOT ANGLE OF THE TEACHER

20. Now, let us move on with our discussion for today. As I have mentioned earlier it is about the

place value and the value of a digit of a given decimal number through ten

thousandths.

21. What is decimal number? (pause)

22. Decimal numbers are number that has a decimal point followed by a digit that show a value

smaller than one.

23. TEXT OVERLAY: SHOW EXAMPLE OF DECIMAL NUMBERS

24. CUT TO NORMAL ANGLE OF THE TEACHER

25. When we say place value, it is the value represented by a digit in a number

26. on the basis of its position in a number.

27. While value is the actual value of the digit in the number.

28. Now let us examine the decimal place value chart.

29. The given numbers are 225.2468

30. SHOW PLACE VALUE CHART.

34. The period is the decimal point.

35. The numbers to the left of the decimal point are the whole number.

36. The numbers to the right of the decimal point are the decimal number.

37. Let us determine now the place value and the value of each digit in a number.

38. The numbers 225 are the whole numbers.

39. The place value of the first digit to the right of the decimal point

40. which is 2 (two) is tenths.

41. And Its value is (0.2 two tenths)

42. We used the word tenths to name the position of two (2) in a number

43. And we used the number 0.2 (two tenths) to refer to its value

44. The place value of the second number to the right of the decimal point is hundredths.

45. And the value is 0.04(four hundredths) it is because number is 4.

46. The place value of the third number to the right of the decimal point is thousandths.

47. And the value is 0.006 (six thousandths) because the number is 6.

48. The place value of the fourth number to the right of the decimal point is ten thousandths

49. And the value is 0.0008 (eight ten thousandths).

50. SHOW THE TEACHER PRESENTING THE LESSON

51. To further understand the concept, let us study more examples. Write the place value and
value of the underlined digit.

4. SHOW THE ANSWERS

5. Now let us check your answers. In number one we will determine the place value and the

value of the underlined digit which is 6.

6. Based on the chart the place value of number six (6) is tenths.

7. And its value is 0.6.

8. In number two the underlined digit is 4.

9. number 4 is the second number to the right of the decimal number

10. So place value of number 4 is hundredths.

11. And its value is 0.04.

12. For number three the underlined digit is 5.

13. As we can see in the chart number five is in thousandths.

14. Therefor the place value of five is thousandths.

15. And its value is 0.005.

16. Did you get all the correct answers? You did a good job!

17. TEXT OVERLAY: GENERALIZATION

18. You must keep in mind that

24. The third digit to the right of decimal point is in the thousandths place.

25. The fourth digit to the right of decimal point is in the ten thousandths place and so on

26. Now let us move on to our next topic which is Reading and Writing

27. Decimal Numbers through Ten Thousandths.

28. This lesson will help you on how to read and write decimal numbers through ten

thousandths.

29. Let’s use the place value chart to help you read the number.

30. INSERT

31. 5.30 is a decimal number in standard form. It is read as “5 and thirty

hundredths”.

32. Like whole numbers, we read decimals from left to right

33. The digits to the left of the decimal point are read as a whole number, and the

decimal point is read as “and”.

34. The digits to the right of the point are also read as a whole number, after which
we say the name of the place value of the digit.
35. Let’s study this example: INSERT

39. 35.527---------- Thirty-five and five hundred twenty-seven thousandths.

40. Decimals are just another way of writing fractions whose denominators

41. Are powers of ten and the proper way to read them is same as reading the

42. Corresponding fractions which they are represent.
