Matrices have many applications across diverse fields including science, commerce, social science, and more. They are used to represent linear transformations in computer graphics, model wireless signals, solve circuits problems in electrical engineering, and record family spending data in social sciences. Specifically, matrices are used to project 3D images to 2D in graphics, perform signal processing in wireless communication, model optics problems, and solve simultaneous equations in engineering. Determinants also have applications in solving systems of equations, analyzing vector products, solving business optimization problems, and providing formulas for geometric properties.

Applications of Matrices

The application of matrix plays a major role in Mathematics, as well as in other fields. It helps in
solving linear equations. Matrices are extremely valuable objects that can be found in a wide
range of applications. Matrices have many applications in diverse fields of science,
commerce, and social science. Matrices are used in:
(i) Computer Graphics
(ii) Optics
(iii) Cryptography
(iv) Economics
(v) Chemistry
(vi) Geology
(vii) Robotics and animation
(viii) Wireless communication and signal processing
(ix) Finance ices
(x) Mathematics

Few of them are explained below:

1. Use of Matrices in Computer Graphics
Earlier, architecture, cartoons, and automation were done by hand drawings
but nowadays they are done by using computer graphics. Square matrices
very easily represent the linear transformation of objects. They are used to
project three-dimensional images into two-dimensional planes in the field of
graphics. In graphics, a digital image is treated as a matrix to start with. The
rows and columns of the matrix correspond to rows and columns of pixels and
the numerical entries correspond to the pixels’ colour values.

2. Use of Matrices in Wireless Communication
We know that wireless communication is an important part of the
telecommunication industry. Matrices are used to model the wireless signals
and optimize them. For detection, extractions and processing of the
information embedded in signal matrices are used. Matrices play a key role in
signal estimation and detection problems. They are used in sensor array
signal processing and the design of adaptive filters. Matrices help in
processing and representing digital images.

3. Use of Matrices in Science
Matrices are used in the science of optics to account for reflection and for
refraction. Matrices are also useful in electrical circuits and quantum
mechanics and resistor conversion of electrical energy. Matrices are used to
solve AC network equations in electric circuits.

4. Use of Matrices in Social Science

One-dimensional information, such as a family's total monthly cost, can be
conveyed using real numbers. However, if two families' monthly spending on
three items—food, entertainment, and health (indexed by 1, 2, 3)—are to be
recorded, a rectangular array of real values, or a matrix, must be used.

5. Uses of Matrices in Commerce

Matrix Cramer's Rule and determinants are useful tools for resolving various
problems in business and economics involving profit maximisation and loss
minimization. Variance and covariance are calculated using matrices. With the
use of a matrix determinant, Matrix Cramer's Rule is utilised to find solutions
to linear equations.

DETERMINANTS

Some of the applications in various subjects are listed below:-

1)Application of determinants in computer science.

Determinants are used to solve linear equations in two or three variables by
applying matrix and determinant. It is also used to check the density or
consistency of any system and whether they are consistent.

2)Application of determinants in the engineering field.

Determinants in mathematics have some more applications in engineering
mathematics. For example, they can be used to solve simultaneous
equations and to analyse vector products. This brochure will show you how
to calculate the importance of a determinant.

3)Application of determinants in business.

Determinants and Cramer’s rule are essential tools for solving many
businesses and economic problems. It can be exceptionally frequently
used to search for an optimal explanation of the maximisation profit or
minimization loss.

4)Application of determinants in Maths.

Determinants can be used to give formulas explicit for the solution of a
system of n equations in n unknowns and the inverse of an invertible
matrix. They can also provide formulas for the area/volume of specific
geometric figures.
