GANITO KAMI NOON, PAANO KAYO NGAYON?
THEY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO BE FILIPINO
THEY STRIVED HARD TO BE PART OF THE HIGH SOCIAL CLASS BECAUSE THEY WANT TO BE
TREATED IN A MORE SPECIAL WAY.
The film Ganito kami noon, paano kayo ngayon? Movie title: Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo
N'yon? portrays early Filipino life at the time of the end of Spanish colonization and the
beginning of American colonization. The movie emphasized how Filipinos worked hard to
understand their own identities as well as the social challenges prevalent at the era. From
Nicolas Ocampo's perspective, popularly known as "kulas," we watched how he struggled with
his sense of Filipino identity. . Throughout his journey, he met various characters from whom he
learned that Filipinos are Spaniards living in the Philippines, as stated by Padre Gil and Lim the
merchant, but for Don Tibor, Filipinos are those who are willing to accept responsibilities, and
for that, kulas asks him? Is it true that I'm Filipino? And Don Tibor replied, "Not yet."
Consider how the main character was confused about his own identity while he is in his own
country. The colonizers' ideologies greatly influenced the Philippines at the time, and it is for
this reason that the people's burning filipinism was extinguished. I also saw in the character of
doing how much effort she put in just to be a member of the upper social class. That made me
realize that in those early days, only the elite class got to experience the best of everything,
while those who lived in the provinces were treated as nobody.
The entire film depicted the lives of early Filipinos in a very realistic manner, with characters
speaking in both Spanish and Chinese. Filipinos are treated as slaves in their own country, and
they are fighting for justice while the rich hold it in their hands. I also like how the background
music fits in with the plot of the story.
As a modern youth, I realized that our ancestors fought for the freedom we enjoy and celebrate
today. We owe a lot to them because they were willing to give their lives so that future
generations could live in freedom and with their own identity as Filipinos.
There is a part of me that refuses to forgive those who colonized us. Those who owned our
country and attempted to distort our culture and traditions, but we now live in the present and
must accept that we were greatly influenced by those colonizers. We live today with their
cultures and traditions imprinted on our history.
