Network Installation and Configuration

Overview
The MX 16-slice CT Scanner system is fully compliant with DICOM 3.0 standard and enables comprehensive
connectivity to Philips Scanners.
System communication with other stations is based on the DICOM 3.0 standard. This enables the system to
communicate with any DICOM-3 compliant products (including other vendors’ scanners, workstations and hardcopy
units). The system can send/retrieve images to/from other stations and other stations can retrieve/send images from/to
the system. The system can function both as a server and as a client. Images are transferred in the DICOM-3 protocol,
based on TCP/IP as a transport layer and on Ethernet as a data-link layer.
The communication is made through an Ethernet network meeting IEEE 802.3 specifications. The supported media
type is 10/100/1000BaseT.

Network Configuration
This chapter explains how to customize the network configuration of the system Host computer for site-specific
requirements.
In Network Configuration you define all the devices and systems that are connected to the system Host computer:
• Devices connected directly to the system (such as Local Folders, DVD Drive)
• Systems connected via the Ethernet network to the system (such as PACS/RIS, CT scanners, DICOM compatible
devices, etc.).
Perform Network Configuration by opening dialog boxes and entering the parameters that correspond to your system’s
Host computer configuration.
This manual includes the following topics:
• Network Configuration Terminology on page 10
• System Name Setting on page 13
• Configuring the TCP/IP on page 14
• Configuration Procedures on Application Software on page 18
• Data Source Function on page 30
• Images Transfer Test on page 32
NOTES • When connecting the system to the network, also configure all other systems on the network so that they
recognize the system Host computer. For configuration instructions refer to the documentation
accompanying these devices.
• When connecting the system to another DICOM compatible station (scanner/printer), the Internet Address
(IP), AE Title, and port number of the Host computer must be provided.
• MX 16-slice default port number is 104.

Network Configuration Terminology

This section includes definitions of terminology relating to Network Configuration.

DICOM
Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine. A standard defining image format and communication protocol
between medical imaging stations

Network Connection
The system can be connected to CT scanners, and DICOM-3 compliant scanners, workstations, printers and laser
imagers through an Ethernet network.

Internet Address (IP)

All devices on the network have a unique Internet Address.
The format of the Internet Address is x. y. z. and w where x, y, z, and w are integers between 0 to 255 (e.g. 192.1.1.1).
These 4 integers are divided into 2 fields:
• The first (left-most) field is called the network address and should be identical for all the nodes in the network
(unless routing is used).
• The second field is the node address and must be unique for each node in the network.
The format of the network and node addresses is determined by the following rule:
a. If x is between 0-127, the network is called a “Class A” network.
In this case, the network address consists only of x, and the node address consists of y.z.w.
b. If x is between 128-191, the network is called a “Class B” network.
In this case, the network address is x.y, and the node address is z.w.
c. If x is between 192-255, the network is called a “Class C” network. In this case, the network address is x.y.z, and
the node address is w.

Network Installation and Configuration
MX 16-sliceNetwork Installation and configuration Revision D

Netmask
A custom netmask can be defined (a logical grouping of the systems in the network). However, the default netmask
should be used unless the network administrator at the site assigns a custom netmask.

Port
The port is an endpoint on the node for a specific application. For example:
• Default http port: 80
• Default DICOM port: 104

Node
Each DICOM-3 compliant station in the network (Ethernet) is considered a node for Network Configuration purposes.
The nodes fall into four categories:
• Other DICOM-3 compliant scanners, workstations etc.
• PACS
• RIS
• Printer

Device
Each node can include one or more devices. A device can be used to:
• Import data: for example, a scanner which produces images
• Store and handle the data: for example, the local disk which stores images in PACS storage
• Export data: for example, an export device which is used to export film images.
There are three device categories:
• Local hardware: CD/CDR/DVD RW
• DICOM item storage/Query
• Local Folder

AE Title
Each device has a unique logical address in DICOM communication. This logical address is called AE Title

RIS
A Radiology Information System (RIS) is a computerized database used by radiology departments to store,
manipulate, and distribute patient radiological data and imagery. The system generally consists of patient tracking and
scheduling, result reporting, and image tracking capabilities. RIS complements HIS (Hospital Information Systems) and
is critical for an efficient radiology workflow practice.

MPPS
The DICOM Modality Performed Procedure Step (MPPS) service is used for sending all study information and x-ray
parameters, such as acquisition information, patient details, and image information, to the HIS/RIS server upon
completion of the examination.

AR Timeout
Association Request time-out in seconds used in DICOM Communication. The default is 10 sec.

DIMSE Timeout
DICOM Message Service Element, time-out (in seconds) is used in the DICOM images transferring. The default is
30sec.

Data Source Function

The Data Source function enables the user to export images in DICOM format from the Application Software. Images
can be exported to a Removable Disk, DVD, CD or to a DICOM Station (a station that accepts the DICOM format).
To create a Data Source device on the Application Software:

Basic Network Testing

The testing procedure is based on the Ping utility, this utility sends packets for the tested computer to another computer
that is connected to the same network. The other computer returns every packet it receives to the sender of the packet.
In this test, the packets are sent from and returned to the Host Computer.
The Ping utility also displays every returned packet, thus enabling the user to see if the network connection OK.

Testing
1. Log On the application software as philips_service.
2. Open a cmd window.
3. Type: Ping IP-address-of- the -other -host, and press Enter.
NOTE For instance, if the IP address of the other Host is 192.168.54.203, type: Ping 192.168.54.203
4. If everything is OK, the following appears in the cmd window:
Pinging 192.168.54.203 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.54.203: bytes=32, time=3ms,TTL=64
