4|Page
Work Method Statement PEBS / WMS/ 01

Anchor bolts are to be set in accordance with PEBS Pennar’s issued ‘FOR COSTRUCTION ANCHOR
BOLT PLAN’. The Following procedure shall be adopted by the Civil Contractor for Setting of the
Anchor Bolt

Mark the grid lines as indicated in anchor bolt setting plan on the reference pillars and check whether
foundation is square with the help of Theodolite or Total Station. Ensure following points are kept in
mind during setting of anchor bolts at site:
1. Ensure rigidity of shuttering and reinforcement and make sure cover blocks are in place.
2. Place the anchor bolts in respective templates. Mark centerlines on template
3. Check the level and projection of threaded portion of anchor bolts; it can adjusted by adjusting nut
below and above the template.
4. All anchor bolts should be located in concerned templates, check distances and diagonal. Nail
template to outer formwork.
5. Verticality of anchor bolts can be maintained by tying it to reinforcement; if required it can be also
tack welded with reinforcement.
6. Before pouring concrete re-check the elevations of anchor bolts using the level instrument and
ensure that the nuts are tight.
7. During concreting ensure that concrete surface under template is rough and level.
8. Remove the template after setting of concrete and clean the protruded portion of anchor bolts and
apply the grease to threads and cover it with hessian cloth to protect it from dust.
9. The gap below the base plates should be grouted by civil contractor after completing the plumbing,
alignment and bolt tightening of building.
10. Anchor bolts shall be set perpendicular to the theoretical bearing surface; threads shall be
protected from falling of free concrete and nuts shall run freely on the threads.
11. The projection of anchor bolts from the theoretical bearing surface shall strictly follow the drawing.

4.0 Receiving and Storing of material at site

5|Page
Work Method Statement PEBS / WMS/ 01

1. Upon receipt of material, the materials controller will match the packing lists and shall verify the
consignment.
2. Lifting Nylon belts with suitable SWL shall be used for unloading the material to minimize the
damage to the painted surface. Else proper packing will be provided if steel slings are used for
offloading to avoid painting damages.
3. The Material will be stored in a firm and dry area.
4. The material shall be stored above ground level with proper packing.
5. The materials shall be stacked in locations according to the building/areas, and should be at a
lifting position adjacent to the area to be erected. This is to facilitate the sorting and delivery during
the erection.
6. The materials shall be stored separately, above ground level on timber packing. They shall not be
stacked directly on top of each other but must be separated thick timber, and shall not be stacked
in contact with other steel components and must be separated by a minimum gap.
7. The sheeting material should be placed with a minimum 5 o slope to avoid a water pond.

5.0 Painting of Primary Steel:

The Painting of the structural steel will be carried out as per the paint manufacturers specification and
guidelines

6.0 Primary and Secondary Erection

6|Page
Work Method Statement PEBS / WMS/ 01

Planning the lifting operation is essential to ensure that the lift is carried out safely and efficiently. The
following points will always be considered:
 Where the load is to be picked up from
 Where the load is to be placed
 What areas are to be passed over
 Proximity of the other contractors workers
 Any obstructions in the way
 How the load is to be slung
 How the slings are to be removed
 How the crane driver will be directed
 The weight of the load
 The weather
 A pre-lift meeting will be held before lifting any structure to ensure everybody at site
understands the lifting method or step for the erection of the entire building.

 Prior to start of any lifting work, the location for positioning of the cranes and material
lay down at the erection area shall be identified.

 The crane shall be positioned and out riggers set prior to lifting. Boom length, boom
angle, operating radius and safe lifting capacity shall be assessed as per crane load chart prior to
lifting being made.

 Nylon belts or cloth slings or steel slings with suitable SWL shall be used for unloading/
lifting the materials. The load should be landed gently to ensure that it is not damaged, and that the
crane does not receive any shock loading.

 The signaler must ensure that he is in a place of safety when receiving the load,
ensuring that he cannot be crushed between the load and a fixed object or pushed over an open
edge.

 Webbing slings, or any sling made from synthetic fibers, will be examined before and
after every lift as they are vulnerable to being cut by sharp edges. If there is any sign of a cut or
fraying in the fabric, they should be taken out of use and examined by a competent person

Structural Stability

7|Page
Work Method Statement PEBS / WMS/ 01

The Erection of any element or assembly will start only if all necessary equipments and tackles on site,
to ensure that the stability is maintained at all times. Sufficient provision and appropriate use of
temporary guys will be made during all stages of erection to ensure the stability of all parts of the
structure as well as structure as a whole. Added care will be taken to ensure that all temporary guys are
appropriately attached and safely anchored.

The stability of effectiveness of all temporary guys and supports should be checked at the end of each
shift and re-assessed at the beginning of each shift before further erection work begins. Similarly, the
stability of erected steel work and temporary guys should be checked prior to work being stopped
because of adverse weather and again when work restarts.

Erection Sequence
Erection will start at a braced bay in order that a stable and self supporting portion of the structure can
first be erected, having the necessary internal or inbuilt restraint. Such a stable and self supporting
braced bay can then be used to stabilize and support subsequently erected steelwork. Until the braced
bay reaches the self supporting stage, some temporary support to the steelwork may be required.
Generally this will be in the form of guy wires.

Lifting of Columns
 Columns & Columns along with the triangular segment will be erected by crane placed by
attaching nylon/ rope slings. Appropriate slings with suitable SWL will be chosen with due
consideration to shock load.
 Rubber packing or wooden packing will be placed where slings are attached to column to avoid
cutting of slings by sharp edges of column.
 Temporary guys will be attached to column at ground to avoid working at height.
 Work men with necessary PPE will guide the column to position into anchor bolts and will
tighten all anchor bolts with necessary spanners.
 Spanners will be tied with lanyard and will be attached to waist belt of workmen.
 During tightening foreman will ensure that column erected in a plumb and level. To bring
column into level necessary shims will be placed below the base plate.
 Crane load will released slightly to check stability of column before fully releasing.

8|Page
Work Method Statement PEBS / WMS/ 01

 Work men in Metal scaffolding / ladder provided with fall back arrestor will remove slings.

Erection of Rafters / Mezz Beams

 The Entire rafter segment to be lifted will be placed on a level ground and will be bolted together at
ground for the clear span building
 After checking the straightness and level of the rafter assembly, the main connection bolts will be
torque tightened.
 Then the rafter segment will be lifted with the help of cranes & will be positioned on top of the column.
 Work men with necessary harness will fix the rafter with the column and will tighten all bolts with
necessary spanners.
 Only after a rafter has been securely fixed in position and stabilized as necessary (by means of roof
bracing, purlins, guys, or other appropriate means), should support from the lifting crane be released
and lifting slings removed.
 The above procedure is repeated for the lifting of columns & rafters for the balance Gridlines

Purlins & Girts

9|Page
Work Method Statement PEBS / WMS/ 01

 Purlins/ Girts will be erected manually or with the help of crane.

 Metal Scaffolding or Ladder will be provided for the approach to the top of the rafter.
 Purlin fixing will be made by work men sitting on top of rafter with necessary harness and will tighten
all bolts with necessary spanners with lanyards.
 Spanners will be tied with rope and will be attached to waist belt of workmen.
Sag angle or Purlin Bridging
 Purlin bridging may be erected by using Sag angle platform or Scaffold Plank spanning across
the purlins.
 The scaffold plank Sag angle platform will have a minimum length equal to at least three purlin
spaces plus six hundred millimeters.
 It will have clamping and blocking arrangement to prevent it from sliding on the slope.
 While working from such a scaffold plank the worker will ensure that he will all times wear a
safety harness attached by a safety line to the purlin.
 Bridging will be raised from the ground by worker sitting on plank.
 Tag line will be attached to member to prevent it from moving due to winds.
The detailed sequence of the erection will be decided based on the site conditions & will be submitted
for approval prior to the starting of erection.
