Prerequisites
Students who have completed or are exempted from the Foundation Year at VGU are eligible to
register for this course. No prior training other than the mathematical knowledge at the Vietnamese
high school level is required

Applicability for other modules

OMAT 1+2 is designed for undergraduate students. Students will be prepared mathematical tools for higher
level economic and business analyses. Mathematical concepts and applications are developed and drawn
from a wide range of fields in economics and business.
Intended learning outcomes (These are learning outcomes of the module. What are the skills, abilities, or major concepts
a student is expected to acquire in this module? If multiple lecturers will teach the module, consider which objectives are likely to be
common to each instance. )

The courses will cover univariate and multivariate calculus, both constrained and unconstrained
optimization, and linear algebra.
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
 Solve difference and differential equations.
 Solve unconstrained optimization problems involving functions of single and multiple variables.
 Solve constrained optimization problems involving functions of single and multiple variables using
the Lagrange multiplier method and Kuhn-Tucker conditions.
 Conduct comparative static analysis
 Solve simultaneous equations.

Learning activities

The course teaching methodologies will be composed of lectures, applications, homework assignments, and
self-study.
 Reading books on specific chapters in the reading list before the lecture started is compulsory
 Main lectures provide you with an overview of the material.
 Application is used for discussion of your exercises (offered on e-learning), and practicing with
exam-like problems that are distributed in class. You need to prepare exercises as your homework in
advance.

3rd edition, MIT Press

Mode of assessment
You will be evaluated based on the results of final exam.

Final examination:
There is a 120 minute written examination with multiple choices and open questions. The date of
regular exam will be announced by the secretary.
Furthermore,
 Be aware that all materials that are presented and discussed in the classes may be subject
to examination (that is, the exam is not limited to the course textbook).
 Mock exam will be made available on e-learning.
 Mind also that graphical calculators are not allowed during the examination according to
the official examination rules.
 Be aware that in the case that on-site examinations cannot be organized due to outbreaks
of diseases (e.g. nCovid pandemic), online examinations will be applied. Formats of online
exam will follow The Online Examination Regulation and The General Examination
Regulation.

Attendance and Absence

Based on the new regulation at Faculty of Economics and Management - VGU, in each class, all
students will be checked the attendance. Students can miss max. 20% of the lectures without any
penalty. Students who have the attendance rate of less than 80% of total lectures may not fulfil
the requirement to take part in the final and retake exams.
