Cell Exploration Activity

This document summarizes an activity where the student learned about different types of cells and their structures. They explored objects of different sizes measured in nanometers, micrometers and millimeters. The student also labeled parts of bacterial and animal cell models and described the functions of various organelles. Finally, they compared which components are present in plant, animal and bacterial cells in a chart.

Part B: (14 pts.)

Bacterial Cell Model ‐ (you will need to return to the "Cell Biology") Label the numbered parts on each
line.

ANSWER:
1. Flagellum
2. Pilus
3. Nucleoid (DNA)
4. Plasma Membrane
5. Ribosome
6. Cell wall
7. Capsule
Part C: (20 pts.)
Animal Cell Model

1. What do mitochondria do?

Mitochondria are membrane-bound cell organelles that produce the majority of the chemical energy required for
biochemical reactions in the cell.

2. How big are mitochondria?

Typically round to oval in shape and range in size from 0.5 to 10 μm

3. What does the Golgi Apparatus do?

The Golgi apparatus is a cell organelle that aids in the processing and packaging of proteins and lipid molecules,
particularly proteins intended for cell export.

4. What is the difference between smooth and rough ER?

The Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum is recognized for storing lipids and proteins, which is the fundamental distinction
between these two terminologies. Ribosomes do not define it. The Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum, on the other hand, is
confined by ribosomes and contains proteins.

5. Where is the nucleolus found?

Found within the cell nucleus

6. What does the nucleolus do?

The nucleolus is a part of the cell nucleus that is responsible for ribosome production and assembly.

4
7.What does the cytoskeleton do?
The cytoskeleton serves as a scaffold that dictates cell shape and cytoplasmic structure, providing a
structural framework for the cell. The cytoskeleton is also responsible for cell mobility in addition to its
structural role.

8.Cytosol goes by what other name?

Cytoplasmic matrix or groundplasm

9.What is the function of the cytosol?

The cytosol serves various functions in the cell and is the site of multiple activities. Signal transduction from
the cell membrane to places within the cell, such as the cell nucleus or organelles, are examples of these
processes.

10. What is the function of the lysosome?

They break down excess or worn-out cell parts. They may be used to destroy invading viruses and bacteria.

1. What other type of cell has a cell wall?

Besides plant cells, Bacteria, fungi and algae cells have cell walls.

2. What makes the plant cells green?

Chlorophyll

3. In plant cells, what does the vacuole do?

vacuoles help maintain water balance

CHLOROPLAST VACUOLE
