Instructions: Read the article “Facebook says 87 million may be affected by Data Privacy
Scandal” by Agence France-Presse. After reading, write your answers to the following
questions.
Questions:
1. What is this data privacy scandal all about?
The Facebook data privacy scandal centers around the collection of personally
identifiable information of "up to 87 million people" by the British political consulting and
strategic communication firm Cambridge Analytica. Zuckerberg took responsibility for this
matter and estimated that the accounts that have been affected were based on the
downloaded academic researches that demands sync-in to personal profiles. It was stated
there that facebook has failed in protecting the data privacy of users.
2. How does this Facebook privacy scandal relate to Heidegger’s notion of revealing
of modern technology as challenging forth?
Heidegger: Technology contributes to an inauthentic life, primarily because the
dignity of the human being has been inadequately taken into account. He says that man
should be seen as a human being, instead of only moving lumps of matter in which
something can be done, should be cherished, valued, cared for and sustained. Just those
things that will make life easier should be created by man and not what will ruin life. The
Facebook privacy scandal is connected to Heidegger’s notion of revealing modern
technology as daunting because it posed questions about the privacy and human rights of
Facebook users because Facebook inappropriately exchanged the personal data of 87
million users.
3. How are Facebook users ‘enframed’ in this particular data privacy scandal?
The company is entrusted to its personal details by the users using Facebook. They
hoped the details would remain confidential and would not be leaked. A number of
Facebook users are influenced by this dilemma as it raises questions about the safety of
those users. The users' personal data is obtained by other organizations, and these details
have been used to infer the kind of advertising on the news feed of the users. This adds to
people concerned about the state of their privacy.
4. How do you think Facebook can be used in a way that is more consistent with
Heidegger’s idea of poesies or a bringing forth of technology?
Heidegger stated that both nature (physis) and art (poiesis) are ways of “bringing-
forth” — of unconcealing that which is concealed. He explains that the term technology,
derived from the Greek word techne, once also meant the "bringing-forth of the true into
the beautiful" and the "poetry of the fine arts." Facebook is a platform that allows users to
communicate through the internet to others. It is easy to connect, so it is less a challenge to
spread vital news now that this kind of technology is available. In addition, Facebook has a
function where users can connect via video chat to other users. This provides them the
chance even at long distances of face-to - face contact.
5. How can the Heideggerian notion of questioning guide Facebook users toward a
beneficial use of social media?
The Heideggerian notion of questioning will lead Facebook users into a genuine use
of social media by confronting the technology itself. Users would ask what the invention
actually is. They should decide what the initial purpose would then be for their advantages
and drawbacks. In the Heideggerian inquiry concept, consumers may decide whether their
use of technology is legal or whether or not it is for a positive cause.
