The first one has been done for you as an example

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you

Using Conditionals in Expressing an Argument

What is It
On Parts of Conditional Sentence:
The “If clause” and the “main clause”
Conditional sentences are statements discussing known situations and their consequences. A complete
conditional sentence contains a conditional clause (if-clause) or the condition, and the consequence (main
clause) or the result.
Examples:
If Clause If she doesn’t follow game rules
Main Clause she gets hurt

2
On Type 0 Conditional Sentence
1. Zero Conditional or Type 0 conditional sentences are used when the results are always true, like a scientific
facts and general truths.
This type follows the form [If + present tense of a verb,] + [present tense of a verb]

The simple present tense of the verb is used in the if-clause or the conditional clause. In the main clause is
the consequence of type 0 conditional sentence.
In the following examples, the main clauses are single underlined, while the if-clauses are double
underlined.

1.If you cross an international dateline, the time changes.

2.If babies are hungry, they cry.

3. You get water if you mix hydrogen and oxygen.

On Type 1 Conditional Sentence

2. First Conditional or Type 1 conditional sentences are used to talk about things that might happen in the
future. They express the possibility to have the given result.
The form [If + present tense of a verb,] + [will + present tense of a verb] is followed.
The simple present tense of the verb is used in the if-clause or the conditional clause, while the simple
future tense of the verb is used in the main clause or the consequence of type 1 conditional sentence.
Examples:
1. If it hits a concrete floor, an egg will crack.

2. If you accidentally cut you finger with knife, it will bleed.

Try to do the activity below about the type 1 conditional sentence.

Remember that simple present tense of the verb is used in the if-clause or the conditional clause, while the
simple future tense of the verb in the main clause or the consequence is used in Type 1 conditional sentence.

On Type 2 Conditional Sentence

3. Second Conditional or Type 2 conditional sentences are used to express outcomes that are completely
unrealistic or will not likely happen in the future. The simple past tense of the verb is used in the if-clause or the
conditional clause, while the auxiliary modal verbs (i.e. could, should, would, might) in the main clause or the
consequence of type 2 conditional sentence.
Examples: If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world.
If Mario inherited large amount of cash from his father, he could buy land to farm.
Remember that simple past tense of the verb is used in the if-clause or the conditional clause, while the
auxiliary modal verbs (i.e. could, should, would, might) in the main clause or the consequence of Type 2 conditional
sentence.
On Type 3 Conditional Sentence
3. Third Conditional or Type 3 conditional sentences are used to explain that present circumstances would be
different if something different had happened in the past.
Examples:
1. If I had won the contest, I would have made my mother proud before she died.
2. If Mario had inherited large amount of cash from his father, he could have bought the heart of
his love.
Remember that the past perfect tense of the verb is used in the if-clause or the conditional clause, while
the auxiliary modal verbs (i.e. could, should, would, might) + have + past participle of the verb are used in the main
clause or the consequence of the Type 3 conditional.
To sum up the topic, there are the four types of conditionals as presented below.

3
Although these sentences perform different functions, they share a common feature: all conditionals
include a cause and effect relationship. The “cause” part of each sentence describes a condition or situation. This
part of a conditional is called the “condition clause,” and usually begins with the word “if” (or an equivalent phrase
like as long as or in the event that). The “effect” part of a conditional is called the “result clause,” which explains an
outcome that is dependent on the condition described in the other part of the sentence.
Conditionals have two kinds — real and unreal/untrue. Additionally, these conditions are categorized into
four, namely zero, first, second, and third. Zero and first conditionals are categorized as real, while second and
third are unreal. Notice that if the condition clause comes first, it is followed by a comma. A comma is not needed
when the result clause is first in a conditional sentence.
In general, conditionals are extremely important in the English language because they help us express
things that may happen in the present and future.
