Kyokushin Symbols
The two symbols of Kyokushin Karate are the Kanji, which means Kyokushinkai , and the round symbols
named Kanku. The Kanji is worn on the left side of the uniform ( dogi ) of all Kyokushin practitioners. The
Kanku badge is usually worn on the left arm of the dogi.
Additionally in our organization we have the IFK symbol which is worn on the right arm of the dogi.

Kanji

The Kanji is the symbol that is universally known to represent Kyokushinkai and
incorporates the three kanjis from Kyokushinkai :
Kyoku - Ultimate ; Shin - Truth ; Kai - Society

Kanku

The Kanku symbol is taken from the kata Kanku Dai - sky gazing form , where
the hands are raised above the head with the thumbs and index fingers touching
as the practicioner focuses their gaze through the hands.

IFK

The logo of International Federation of Karate - The central symbol a

rising wave, which is taken from Saiha Kata and it symbolizes overcoming
all obstacles .
What is Karate

For most of the people Karate is just a generic term for all martial arts that use kicking and
striking.
This is not entirely correct ! Karate is a Japanese traditional martial art and it is not the
same with other stand up martial arts like Taekwondo ( Korean ) , Kung Fu ( Chinese ) ,
Muay Thai ( Thai ).
Karate means literally Empty Hand and it was introduced in Japan by Gichin Funakoshi ,
who is considered the father of Karate .
How did Karate get to Okinawa ? According to legend, in the sixth century A.D., the Indian
monk Bodhidharma traveled from India to China to teach the Liang dynasty monarch the
tenets of Zen Buddhism. To endure this arduous journey, he developed the physical and
mental powers for which he was later renowned.
These methods then later were borrowed by the people from the Ryu Kyu islands ( today
Okinawa ) and further developed in many different styles.
Some of the most known Karate style today are : Shotokan, Goju Ryu , Shito Ryu, Ishin
Ryu and of course Kyokushin Karate.
The differences between these Karate styles are mainly how techniques are executed but
also how kumite ( fighting ) is conducted. Some Karate styles teach non-contact or semi-
contact fighting. In Kyokushin Karate we are ferm believers in contact type of kumite !
One can not learn to fight and therefore efficiently defend himself if training is done
without contact. Of course the level of contact varies from very little contact for kids and
beginners to full-contact for advance students.

What is Kyokushin Karate ?

To some, it is a way to develop and maintain physical strength and learn

effective self-defense techniques. To others, it is much more than that.
Kyokushin karate is a way of life that transcends the physical aspects of
training. Kyokushin karate is Budo Karate. The philosophy of Budo is
evident in the name that Mas Oyama chose for his karate style, Kyokushin,
which means "Ultimate Truth". It is also reflected in the Dojo Kun, in Mas
Oyama's Eleven Mottos, and in the Spirit of Osu.
Kyokushin or Kyokushinkai was developed in the 1950's. The first official
Honbu (headquarters) was founded by Masutatsu Oyama in 1964.
Kyokushinkai is Japanese for "the society for the ultimate truth". It is
considered one of the most challenging forms of Karate. Developed by
Masutatsu Oyama, this is probably one of the hardest form of Karate today,
placing great emphasis on combat effectiveness. The Kyokushin system is
based on traditional Karate like Shotokan and Goju Ryu, but incorporates
many elements of combat sports like Boxing and Kickboxing in Kumite.
Many techniques like Hiza-Geri (knee kick), Mae Oroshi Kakato Geri (axe kick) and Gedan Mawashi Geri
(low kick) aren't found in other traditional Karate styles. Today, many Kyokushin fighters appear in
Kickboxing events like K-1 and even MMA .
After the death of Masutatsu Oyama in 1994, the International Karate Organization (IKO) splintered into
several groups . Some also joined Hanshi Steve Arneil who left the IKO in 1991 to form the International
Federation of Karate (IFK). Many Kyokushin groups throughout the world have chosen to focus their
experience around the philosophy of Kyokushin as a method of self-improvement and discipline. The
Kyokushin way teaches its students that the most important aspects of training are not the ability to knock
down an opponent. Instead, the person must contemplate the technique and understand that the true meaning
of the Kyokushin way is not in violence, but the mastering of oneself.
