In or Out? The Ninth Ray Proposal

Name: Duran, Brithney Rose Course: BS CRIMINOLOGY

Your Stand: In or Out?

I have nothing against honoring the Moro people's contributions and suffering; after all, their devotion and bravery exemplified the true essence of
Filipino blood. The idea of modifying the flag's design is partially satisfied by it, despite the fact that it is reasonable. Although it was casually
inferred, it has a comprehensible meaning.

The idea of adding the ninth ray to the flag was proposed by Senator Richard Gordon. Although it was to recognize the heroic actions of our Muslim
people, it was far from the real purpose it was encouraged. In simple terms, Gordon suggested this idea to represent the heroism of our fellow
Moro people by adding another ray to represent the nine provinces that fought back to the ruling of Spanish colonialism. As opposed to the
statement, a Filipino historian regarded that Senator Gordon's proposal was a bit misleading. Instead of the rays symbolizing the bravery of the
Filipinos who fought against the foreign oppressors, it was rather the eight provinces that revolted against the authority of Spanish colonialism.
The Historian said that it originated from the colonial authorities that placed in the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution during martial law. Thus;
the provinces do not actually symbolize their fight against the Spaniards but to credit the eight rays recognized by the Spanish colonial that
triggered the Philippine Revolution. We could say that it is due to the arbitrary of the Spanish government hence, the design was not out of a whim.
It wasn’t determined out of prejudice but through the natural events of Philippine history.

In conclusion, I do not oppose the ninth ray proposal. In fact, the explanation is acceptable. However, there is no need to change the Philippine flag
because its symbol has been interpreted differently than Sen. Gordon's proposal. It must be preserved in its current form, in my opinion, because it
represents the fidelity of our forefathers who fought for their country and people. It is already a deeply ingrained symbol of Filipinos upholding the
values of bravery, loyalty, freedom, and, most importantly, history.

Your Design of the Philippine Flag

The Philippine Flag, as raised by the Ninth Ray Bill, has been redone. To symbolize balance and equality, we decided to place the sun in the middle of
the flag rather than on the left side. Like in the original flag design, the red is at the bottom and the blue is at the top. The blue field should be on
top of the flagpole during times of peace, while the red field should be there during times of conflict. The concepts of sacrifice, truth, justice, and
peace are all associated with the color blue. Patriotism, bravery, and courage are all associated with the color red. The three stars in the sky above
the sun stand for the three Philippine archipelagos of Luzon, Visayas and Minadanao.

Assessing the Importance of Primary Sources in Understanding the Grand Narrative of Philippine History

Name: Duran, Brithney Rose Course: BS CRIMINOLOGY

Instructions: Give three reasons why the Acta de la Proclamación de la Independencia del Pueblo Filipino is important to the grand narrative of
Philippine history.

1. The Philippines' Declaration of Independence is a crucial moment in our history since it represents the freedom for which our heroes sacrificed
their lives and fought the Spanish oppressors. The proclamation itself gave us Filipinos the inspiration that we had the independence to
construct our own government and policies that are governed by Filipinos, not the colonists, even though it was not formally acknowledged by
America and Spain. That is why until this day, we still use the flag created during that declaration, we sing the same national anthem, and we
retained June 12, 1898, as our National Independence Day. Even though this independence was short-lived, it still has a great impact on our
history, as it proves that we Filipinos can achieve freedom and victory against powerful opposing nations such as Spain. (Almario, 2015)

2. The Act of Proclamation of the Independence of the Filipino People, also known as Acta de la proclamación de Independencia del Pueblo Filipino,
had a profound impact on Philippine history. Pacete (2020) stated that the proclamation of independence marked the freedom of the Filipinos
from the Spaniards. On the same day, Emilio Aguinaldo announced his position as the president of the Philippines (Embassy of the Philippines,
2014). After the protracted period of colonization, it was undoubtedly a significant event that increased Filipino nationalism at the time and
demonstrated their capacity to establish their own government in the face of the colonizers.

3. A turning point in the history of our country occurred with the signing of the Philippine Declaration of Independence. The Philippines were
declared independent by President Aguinaldo, ending its foreign domination. Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista's Act of Philippine Independence
was a crucial source for establishing the reality of this historic occurrence. It not only attests to the declaration's veracity but also gives the
reader more information about the situation and the signatories. The publishing of the book and the declaration marked the start of a period
when the Philippines would have its own ruling party. a system of government in which the entirely autonomous Spanish government has very
little control on policy. In Philippine history, this event is crucial because it demonstrated that the Filipino people will no longer accept or
submit to foreign rulers. The declaration also served as a call to arms for the Filipino people. According to Bautista and Aguinaldo, such a step
would motivate people to resist the Spaniards with greater zeal. The vow, like Churchill's "We Will Fight in the Seas" address to the British
people, was designed to encourage patriotism and independence in the Filipino people.
