Pickling Passivation Procedure

This 5-page document outlines procedures for pickling and passivating stainless steel materials. It describes cleaning and degreasing to remove surface contamination before pickling. Pickling can be done using chemical cleaning or a K-2 paste/spray. Passivation is then done using a K-2 solution. Inspection requires a white metal surface under lighting of 100 lx minimum. Protections after include avoiding recontamination, separate storage, and plugging openings. Safety precautions address chemical purchasing, training, ventilation, and emergency eye rinsing. Manufacturer recommendations must also be followed.

1. SCOPE
This standard procedure covers the requirement for cleaning & degreasing, to remove surface
contamination & pickling of SS, DSS & SDSS materials.

2. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS

2.1. ASTM –A 380.

3. RESPONSIBILITIES

Engineer:-Production shall be responsible for arrangement of equipment’s, materials and movement

of all these spools/materials & to carry out all the operation according to this procedure to the
respective pickling and passivation areas. In each stage after completion of operation engineer
production shall offer the spool for QC Inspection. Engineer: - Inspection QC shall inspect the
entire surface thoroughly for each stage as per procedure.

4. PROCEDURE

4.1 Following method can be used for pickling and passivation.

4.1.1 Pickling & passivation using chemical cleaning as recommended in ASTM- A380
(BOTH ID AND OD SURFACES)
4.1.2 Pickling and passivation using by K-2 paste or spray.
4.1.3 Pickling and passivation in ID by chemical solution.

4.2 Pickling and passivation using K-2 solution (OD &ID weld surface to remove the complete
heat tint)

4.2.1 Cleaning
The weld surface shall be free from oil, grease, dirt, paint, rust, scales, particles of iron
and other metals, welding flux etc. This can we achieved by using soak cleaning
powder.

4.2.2 Pickling
4.2.2.1 The steel temperature at the time of application of K2 paste or spray shall be 20
to 40 Deg C
4.2.2.2 K2 paste shall be used for cleaning only weld surface required to clean. K2
paste shall be applied on weld seam & surrounding are (heat effected zone) by
brush.
4.2.2.3 K2 Spray shall be used for cleaning large fabricated equipment. K2 Spray shall
be sprayed with pressurized plastic spray bottle or spray pump.
4.2.2.4 After applying K2 paste or spray item shall be left for 30 to 50 mints.
4.2.2.5 After 30 to 50 mints surface shall be washed thoroughly with water. Leave the
surface to get dried completely.

4.2.3 Passivation
The steel temperature at the time of application of K2 passivation shall be at 20 to 40
DEG C. K2 passivation solution shall be applied uniformly and leave the surface for 20
to 30 minutes. Rinse the surface thoroughly with water. (ONLY POTABLE WATER
SHALL BE USED).

5 INSPECTION
All passivated surfaces shall have a white metal surface. To perform the inspection lighting
arrangement shall be installed. (100 lx is recommended).

6 PROTECTION AFTER PICKLING

6.1 Avoid any contamination of newly passivated areas. The area shall be closed immediately after
cleaning is completed.
6.2 All passivated spools shall be stored away from CS materials.
6.3 All opening shall be closed with polyethylene, nylon, ss cap, plug or seal etc.
6.4 Handling shall be carried out by using lint free cotton hand gloves.
