THAT SUGAR FILM (2014)

1. What was your initial reaction to the film?

Damon plays a human lab rat in this documentary about the dangers of sugar overdosing. He
becomes a human lab rat and consumes a diet containing 40 teaspoons of sugar per day for 60 days,
under the supervision of a team of scientists and nutritionists (40 teaspoons is the average Oz ). The
problem is that I have to do it without consuming soft drinks, chocolate, ice cream, or candy. He only
consumes foods labeled as "healthy" but actually contain hidden sugars, such as low-fat yogurts,
granola bars, juices, and granola. Following the experiment, we will use experts to measure and
examine the changes in the body. I was drawn to the beginning of the film by clips of sweet products
such as candies, chocolates, marshmallows, cupcakes, and music. "I can't get enough" is still a thought
in my head. I've seen many documentaries, but this one stands out and I adore it. I enjoyed the film's
sound effects, animations, and creative visualizations while watching it. This film opened up a world
of possibilities for me. At the same time, I discovered that too much sweetness or sugar is bad for you.
This hits me because I've been eating a lot of sweets with anticipation over the last few months.

2. What is your relationship to sugar, do you know your daily sugar

consumption, do you consider yourself as a healthy eater
I can say that my relationship with sugar is intimate. Kidding aside, as an ice cream lover, I eat ice cream
at least once a week. When it comes to chocolate, I prefer dark chocolates. As a non healthy person I dont
measure my calories, sodium and sugar consumption. I also dont look at the nutrition facts of the food I
eat. I don't consider myself a healthy person because I dont have a proper diet, I don't exercise, I dont take
vitamins and sometimes I forget to take my maintenance medicine.

3. Do you think that sugar is a problem in the Philippines?

Why or why not?
Yes, because according to the Department of Health (DOH), Diabetes ranked 6th placed the leading
cause of death among Filipinos. This data was gather through Philippine Health Statistics in 2013.
Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) due to
insufficient insulin production and action, the hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. Uncontrolled
Diabetes leads to serious complications such as stroke, heart attack, end-stage kidney disease and
diabetic retinopathy among others. Diabetes retinopathy accounted for about 5% of global blindness in
2002. I there for concluded that sugar is one of the main problem in the Philippines. In addition, there
are a lot of people who are not aware of how much sugar they take everyday.

4. Are you going to do anything to improve you intake of

healthier foods? If yes, what whould these be?
As I've watched the video, this made me realize that our health is not valued till sickness comes.
And because of this, I will create a diet plan and always consider the nutrition facts in every food
that I will buy. If I am eager to eat something unhealthy, I will always think about the
consequences of my action.
