Reaction Paper on Connected but Alone by Sherry Turkle
Connected but Alone is a video from Youtube released from April 2012 of TED
talk by Sherry Turkle, a sociologist and a psychologist. Turkle brings up one point
saying, “We expect more from technology and less from each other” because
technology appeals to us where we are most vulnerable. Our little devices are so
psychologically powerful that they not only change what we do, they change who
we are. She suggested that we should develop a more self-aware relationship with
technology, with each other, and with ourselves. I definitely agree in most part with
her, technology has big effects to ourselves, our lives and our relation towards
others that is why we should use technology efficiently by practicing solitude.
Turkle mentioned that the power of technology do not only change what we
do, they change who we really are. People customized their lives wherever they

really don’t know who we are anymore.

People are beginning to lose the genuine face to face interaction with a
human and the interactions takes place through screens. A great example of this is

when Turkle describes the old woman in the nursing home talking to the robot. The
woman feels as if the robot understands what she is going through and she is

comforted by that, when in fact the robot has no true real life experiences and can’t
fully grasp the meaning of emotions besides their hard definitions. Turkle suggests
that just because we grew up with the Internet, we tend to see it as all grown up, but it is
not there is time for us to reshape how we build it and use it.

If society continues down this path, of trusting technology over real human
experiences, the future is at risk. We as a society have begun to lean on technology
and immerse ourselves into the life of being connected rather than real human
interaction. Focus on the many ways technology and develop a more self-aware
