Linear Inequalities

This document provides an overview of linear inequalities for 7th grade students. It discusses solving and graphing linear inequalities in one variable algebraically. Key points include identifying inequality symbols and their meanings, verifying solutions to inequalities, and graphing both single and compound inequalities on a number line. Examples are provided to demonstrate solving, verifying, and graphing different types of linear inequalities. The purpose is to help students develop skills in working with inequalities and represent relationships through inequalities and solutions sets.

Linear Inequality - is a mathematical sentence which states that two expressions are
unequal. The inequality in one variable is linear if the highest power of the variable is
1.

Instead of using equal sign (=), inequality we use inequality symbol such as <, >, ≤,
and ≥

EQUATIONS INEQUALITIES
7y+2 = 3y 4x + 2y < 7
5m = 4m-10 11b > 9b - 7
3x + 4y = 48 6y + 5y ≥ 3
y = 8x - 2 3x + y ≤ - 8

TRY THIS!
Verify if the given values of x are solutions to the inequality.

1. −6 − 5𝑥 ≤ 9 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑥=3 𝑥 = −3 𝑥=7

2. 𝑥 − 3 > −1 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑥=0 𝑥=1 𝑥=4

1. −6 − 5𝑥 ≤ 9
𝑥=3 𝑥 = −3 𝑥=7

𝑥 =3 𝑥 = −3 𝑥=7

−6 − 5𝑥 ≤ 9 −6 − 5𝑥 ≤ 9 −6 − 5𝑥 ≤ 9

INEQUALITIES
Some expressway give a maximum speed limit of 100 kph and a
minimum speed limit of 60 kph. Driving faster than 100kph or slower than
60kph is a violation. What are the possible speeds that cars can go in this
expressway?
If the value is greater
There are two inequalities: than or equal to all
other function values.
a. Maximum speed: 100kph
𝑥 ≤ 100
Less than or equal to
the value.
b. Minimum speed: 60kph
𝑥 ≥ 60

Combining two inequalities we have:

60 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 100

Properties of Inequalities
The property that for natural numbers a and b, either a is less than b, a
equals b, or a is greater than b. Means that when you compare two
Trichotomy Property numbers one of the following must be true:
𝑎<𝑏 𝑎>𝑏 𝑎=𝑏

For any real number a, b and c:

Transitive Property 1. 𝑖𝑓 𝑎 > 𝑏 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑏 > 𝑐, 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑎 > 𝑐
2. 𝑖𝑓 𝑎 < 𝑏 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑏 < 𝑐, 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑎 < 𝑐

The same number may be added to both sides

Addition Property of 1. 𝑖𝑓 𝑎 < 𝑏, 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑎 + 𝑐 < 𝑏 + 𝑐
Inequality 2. 𝑖𝑓 𝑎 > 𝑏, 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑎 + 𝑐 > 𝑏 + 𝑐

1. The same positive number may be multiplied to both sides.

Multiplication Property 2. The direction or sense of the inequality is reversed if you multiply
of Inequality both sides by a negative number.
