REFLECTION QUESTION
What insights did I gain from this lesson?

In reading and studying the topic structuralism and semiotics, the insight that I did gain
from this lesson is that this topic is that structuralism pattern is observable in life. We often
observe this pattern in narratives such as movies or films, wherein there is such sequence that
the protagonist will eventually reaching climax of the story or achieving happy ending. Even so,
this type of pattern and sequence is more likely relatable. For instance, in such narrative, the
hero was once living an ordinary life, just like the lives most of us are living right now. Then, have
been able to confront with an event that is the turning point of such hero’s life, in which, at some
point, we also do face that such event and we tend to choose if ever we proceed or not.
Nevertheless, the structural pattern is somehow base or relates to real life. Moreover, Levi-
Strauss mentioned of the common binary opposites. This concept always appears in narratives
in which making such narrative more enticing. Nevertheless, this concept does relate is real life,
in which in our live we do encounter with such “opposites.” Also, structuralism and semiotics do
relate to psychology. More likely, when we see, read, or hear a sign, we directly picture in our
mind the concept of it. Saussure does explain it that the sign is composed of two things: signifier
(the sound image) and the signified (the concept). So, when we tend to see a sign, our mind
proceeds with structural sequence in acquiring the picture in our mind or the so-called concept.
