UNIT LESSON PLAN in MATHEMATICS

Grade Level: Grade-8

School Year: 2019-2020

Quarter: First Quarter

Unit description: Rational Algebraic Expressions with Integral Exponents

General Objectives:

Given a set of expressions, the Grade-8 students will be able to solve problem involving
rational algebraic expressions with integral exponents in no more than 30 minutes with at least
85% accuracy.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the chapter, the students will be able to:

 Describe and illustrate rational algebraic expressions

 Interpret zero and negative exponents

 Evaluate algebraic expressions involving integral exponents

 Simplify rational algebraic expressions

 Multiply, divide, add, subtract rational algebraic expressions

 Simplify complex fraction

 Solve problems involving rational algebraic expressions

Learning Activities:

 K-W-L Chart

The Grade-8 students will be given activity about K-W-L Chart which stands for what
they KNOW, what they WANT to find out, and what they have LEARNED about rational
algebraic expressions.
 Let the Pattern Answer It

The Grade-8 students will be provided with a table regarding zero and negative
exponents. In this activity, the students will complete the given table and interpret the
outcomes of the activity.

 Quiz Constructor

Be like a quiz constructor. Write on a one-half crosswise piece of paper three

algebraic expressions. The student will have to show and evaluate their algebraic
expressions.

 Find My Match

The students will be divided into two groups and will receive 5 strips of rational
algebraic expressions which will be match by the given 5 strips of answer also. Both of
the group will have the same rational algebraic expressions. The first group to form in
front with all the correct match will be declared as the winner.

 Pass, Pick and Try

The teacher will provide the small box with rational algebraic expressions. The
students will sing “Up and Down and Shake-Shake” and will pass the small box. When
the song stops, the students who has the box will pick one given rational algebraic
expressions and will try to answer it with the fundamental operation being used.

 Treasure Hunting

In this activity, the student will find the box that contains the treasure by simplifying
the rational algebraic expressions and will find the answer on the box. Each answer
contains direction that will guide them toward the treasure box.

 Bingo

The students in this activity will be given a set of problems regarding rational
algebraic expressions. They will be given five minutes to solve these problems and they
will write their answers on the puzzle chart to complete it. The one who can finish it first
will shout “BINGO!” and will win a prize.
Teaching and Learning Framework/Model:

In this unit, the teacher will use the 5E model: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and
Evaluate. These model focuses on allowing students to understand a concept over time through a
series established steps or phases. The first E in this model, Engage, allows the teacher to work
and give an understanding of the students’ prior knowledge and identify any knowledge gaps
through an opening question. Explore, students actively explore concepts through concrete
learning experiences and allows them to learn in a hands-on way. Explain, the teacher should ask
the students to share what they learned during the explore phase before introducing technical
information. Elaborate, focuses on giving students space to apply what they have learned which
helps them to develop deeper understanding. Evaluate, teachers can observe and see the students
whether they have a complete grasp over the core concept.

EdTech Tools Needed:

In this unit, the teacher will use some digital resources like laptop, Power point presentation
and projector including some non-digital resources: colored-paper, cartolina, marker, and box.

Instruction/Procedure/Mechanics:

In this unit, the teacher will use the following:

Laptop - used in making Power point presentation

Power point presentation - contains the lesson flow and the lesson content including
the activities.

Very good!

Teacher: In order to verify if you really

have understood our previous topic, let us
have an activity. I have here 5 mathematical
expressions and two-column table with
heading of “Rational Algebraic Expression”
on the first column and “Not Algebraic

3. Motivation

Teacher: Very good class! Based from your

answer, you have already learned what is
Rational Algebraic Expressions so we will
proceed to our next topic. But before that we
will have an activity first and those who can
guess about our topic will be given a reward.

Our activity for today is “Find My Match”

You will be divided into two groups, the
same as the previous meeting. The
mechanics of this activity is that you will
find the correct answer of the given three (3)
strips of problem about Rational Algebraic
Expressions that will match to the three (3)
strips with corresponding answers. Both of
the group will be given the same
expressions. After finding the correct match,
every group should pick six (6) persons to
hold the match strips in front. The first
group to form in front with all the correct
match will be declared as the winner and
will receive a prize.

our topic for today.

B. Developmental Activities:

1. Presentation:

Teacher: Our topic for today is all about

Adding Rational Algebraic Expressions
with like denominators, and we have three
objectives:

• Explain the process on adding

rational algebraic expressions with
like denominators
• Show actively the step-by-step
procedure in adding rational
algebraic expressions with like
denominators
• Solve with certainty on adding
rational algebraic expression with
like denominators
Teacher: Before we start our discussion
proper, we will watch first a video about
adding Rational Algebraic Expressions with
like denominators

(Play video)

Teacher: So, in adding rational algebraic

expressions with like denominators is just
similar when adding fractions with like
denominators. Add the numerators and write
the answer in the numerator of the result
over the common denominator. In symbols:
𝑎 𝑐 𝑎+𝑐
+𝑏 = , b ≠ 0.
𝑏 𝑏

7 2 7+2 9 3
Example: 12 + 12 = = or 4
12 12

The Three Processes in Adding Rational

Algebraic Expression:

1. Adding with common variables

5 9
Suppose the problem is 4𝑥 + 4𝑥 =?
Let us add 5 and 9 which is equal to
14, then write this as the numerator
and copy the common denominator
14
which is 4x. So, our answer is 4𝑥

Since it can still be reduced to

7
simplest form, we can reduce it to 2𝑥
by dividing 2 in numerator and
denominator.
2. Adding with variables in the
numerators and denominators

8𝑦 2 2𝑦 2
Suppose the problem is 𝑦+3 + 𝑦+3

The numerators have variables, and

so do the denominators. In this case,
the denominator in each expression
is the same, so the numerators can be
added as 8𝑦 2 + 2𝑦 2 = 10𝑦 2. The
10𝑦 2
expression is then . There are no
𝑦+3

factors in common, so it is already in

simplest form.

3. Adding then factoring

𝑥 2 −2𝑥−7 3𝑥+1
Example + 𝑥2 −9
𝑥 2 −9

• Combine like terms in the numerator

𝑥 2 −2𝑥+3𝑥−7−1
= 𝑥 2 −9

• Factor out the numerator and

denominator
(𝑥+3)(𝑥−2)
= (𝑥−3)(𝑥+3)

• Write your answer in simplest form

𝑥−2
= 𝑥−3

Teacher: Did you get it class? Students: Yes ma’am.

2. Practice Exercises:

Teacher: Good to hear that students. In

your own sit, try to answer the following so
that you will be practiced. Students:

10𝑥
4𝑥 6𝑥 1. or 2x
1. + 5
5 5

6𝑎2
4𝑎2 2𝑎2 2. 𝑎+2
2. 𝑎+2 + 𝑎+2
1
2𝑥+7 −𝑥 − 3 3. 𝑥−4
3. 𝑥2 −16 + 𝑥2 −16

Teacher: Okay, are you done answering? I

Students who answered: Done Ma’am
want a volunteer to show the answer on the
board.

Teacher: Let us check your works. Oh! You

got the correct answers. Very good students.
How about the others? You get the same Students: Yes Ma’am.
answer?

Teacher: So class, after solving all the

Students: We don’t know Ma’am.
practices, why do you think solving rational
algebraic expression is important? Anyone?
Teacher: Solving Rational Algebraic
Expression is important because it can be
useful tools for representing real life
situations and for finding answers to real
problems. In particular, they are quite good
for solving work problems.
3. Generalization:

Teacher: Okay, since you already learned

how to add Rational Algebraic Expressions
with like denominators and it’s important,
we will have a short activity which is called
“Pass, Pick, and Try” in order to know if you
really understand our discussion.

I have here a small box which contains

papers with questions regarding rational
algebraic expressions. The mechanics of this
activity is you will sing a song Up and Down
and Shake, Shake, Shake. Whoever receive
the small box when I say stop, you will pick
a question from the small box. And if you
get the correct answer, you will receive a
reward. Students: Yes ma’am.

Teacher: Are you ready?

(Questions inside the small box)

1. What is the process involved in adding Students: The three process involved in
rational algebraic expressions with like adding rational algebraic expressions with
denominator? like denominators are 1.) Adding with
common variables 2.) Adding with variables
in the numerators and denominators and
3.) Adding then factoring.

2. In adding rational algebraic expression, Student: The sum should be in simplest

the sum should be in what form? form
3. What have you learned from the Student: (Based on their own opinion)
discussion or what is your realization?

C. Evaluation

more, I will give you an assignment
regarding our topic for today and you will
write your answer in a one whole sheet of
paper. Please copy this one.
