Introduction to Criminology
INTRODUCTION
Criminology is a social science dealing with the nature, the extent and causes of crimes, the
characteristics of criminals and their organizations, the problems of apprehending and convicting law
violators, and the management of jail facilities and correctional institutions. It is a scientific study of the non-
legal aspect of crime, including juvenile delinquency. In its wider sense, it embraces penology, it is primarily
the study of the causation, correction, and prevention of crimes, seen from the viewpoints, of such diverse
disciplines as anthropology, biology, etiology, (the study of character), ethics, psychology and psychiatry,
sociology, and statistics. It also include the study of crime detection, involving such instrumentation as Police
Photography, Forensic Medicine, Forensic Chemistry, Dactyloscopy, Polygraphy, Questioned Documents, and
the likes.
The prevalence of crimes and criminals is universal and its existence is as old as the world has existed. And
from its existence up to the present times, studies on modern techniques in crime prevention, correctional
methods and advanced studies in crime etiology had been pursued by many scholars and advocates of
criminology. Yet, until today, nothing clear and concrete had been formulated for its total remedy, - the
reason why, much have been searched and researched to discover effective methods in combating
criminalities, identifying factors that lead to the cause of crimes and identifying behavior of a would-be
offender.
Victimology as a science and as part of the study of criminology is gaining the attention of scholars and
popularity. Victimologist are greatly concerned in dissecting “victim blaming – victim defending” process in
crime. It is hope that through the scientific study of victimization, crime may be minimized.

Criminologist- Criminologist is generally referred to as a person who practices his profession in criminology. Under
Philippine law, Sec. 22, R.A. 6506, a criminologist is one who has a degree in Criminology, passed the examination for
criminologist and is registered as such by the Board and shall not practice as a criminologist in the Philippines without
having previously obtained a certificate of registration from the Board.
The term criminologist is often defined as someone who is in the study of crime, criminal behavior, types of crime, and
social, cultural and media reactions to crime; does scholarly, scientific and professional study and practice in judicial and
correctional systems, crime prevention, control and treatment of crime and delinquency, measurement of crime, and law
enforcement.
Criminology- Criminology is the scientific study of crime, criminals, and criminal behavior. Criminologists scientifically study
the following: the nature and extent of crime; patterns of criminality; explanations and causes of crime and criminal
behavior; and the control of crime and criminal behavior (Glick, 1995). The term “criminology” (from the Latin- crimen,
accusation, and Greek-logia, study) was coined in 1885 by Italian law professor Raffaele Garofalo as criminologia.
Criminology is the body of knowledge regarding crime as a social phenomenon. It includes within its scoop the
process of making laws, of breaking laws, and of reacting towards the breaking of laws… the objective of criminology is the
development of a body of general and verified principles and of other types o0f knowledge regarding the process of law,
crime, and treatment or prevention (Sutherland and Cressey as cited by Adler Mueller and Laufer, 1995).
In the broadest meaning, criminology is the body of knowledge regarding crime, criminals, and the effort of society
to prevent and repress them. This means that criminology is an interdisciplinary field of inquiry – that is, psychology,
psychiatry, sociology, law, medicine, statistics, economics, and political science in order to provide an integrated approach
In narrower sense, criminology is the scientific study of crimes and criminal behavior. In a key sense, this is the
central aspect of the definition of criminology. It specifies the very essence of this course. This means that criminology is
primarily concerned with knowing and understanding the cause of crime and criminal behavior. It seeks to comprehend the

Criminology is the science which studies crime, forms of criminal behavior, the causes of crime, the definition
of criminality, and the societal reaction to criminal activity. Related areas of inquiry may include juvenile delinquency,
Victimology, (the study of crime victims), theories of prevention, policing, and corrections (Souasa, 2008).
Criminology on the other hand, is closer to psychology than it is to criminal justice, because its studies the
minds and behaviors of criminals as opposed to their criminal actions (Souasa, 2008).
