Exercise # 1 Ailyn O. Labajo

This document contains an exercise on classifying data into quantitative and qualitative variables and identifying their appropriate level of measurement. It provides examples of classifying income, citizenship, education level, temperature, and number of children as quantitative or qualitative variables and identifying whether they are measured at the nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio level. It also gives examples of characteristics of store customers, voter attitudes, stock preferences, company divisions, and steel alloys that can be measured and classified according to the different scale levels.

Exercises in Inferential Statistics

NAME : AILYN O. LABAJO

PROFESSOR : DR. MALABAGO K. NOLASCO
EXERCISE NO. 1 : CLASSIFICATION OF DATA

APPLYING CONCEPTS

1. Identify the following as Quantitative or Qualitative variable. Indicate the level of measurement
required (minimum level).

1.1. Income per month of employees

Answers Reasons
Quantitative Ratio- Differences between from Salary Grade of the
employees can be measured (ex SG11, SG 12, SG 13…)
Interval- Ranges of Salary according to the employee’s
position or level (ex. 20K-25K, 26K-31K, 32K-47K …)

1.2. Citizenship
Answers Reasons
Qualitative Nominal- Simply identifying someone’s citizenship and
consolidating it into organized data (ex. Filipino-5 , Japanese-
10, Chinese-8)

1.3. Educational Level of Respondent

Answers Reasons
Qualitative Ordinal- Identifying the Educational Level of Respondent and
arranging from the lowest to highest level (ex. Elementary,
HS, College…)

1.4. Air temperature of the Sahara Desert

Answers Reasons
Quantitative Interval- Differences of the temperatures can be measured and
the value of 0 is arbitrary because negative values of
temperature do exist (ex. 13 degree, 26 degree, 39 degree…)

1.5. Number of Children in the Family

Answers Reasons
Quantitative Ratio-It makes difference between ages of the children in the
family known along with information on the value of true zero
and it produces the order of the children (ex. 1st- 10, 2nd -8,
…)

2. Below are some objects of varying degrees of abstraction. Provide characteristics or properties
of each of these objects that can be measured and classified according to the four basic types of
scales.
