Assignment:
1. What is Mathematics?
Mathematics simply means to learn or to study or gain knowledge.
The theories and concepts given in mathematics help us understand and solve
various types of problems in academic as well as in real life situations.
The concepts, theories and formulas that we learn in Math books have huge
applications in real-life. To find the solutions for various problems we need to learn
the formulas and concepts. Therefore, it is important to learn this subject to
understand its various applications and significance.

MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD
Lecture Notes
1. What is Mathematics?
- the study of numbers and operations
- a tool collection of skills that helps us answer questions of how many, how much,
and similar questions
- a science of logical reasoning, drawing conclusion from assumed premises, or
strategic reasoning
- the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combination, and of
space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformation, and
generalizations (lexical definition)
- is recognized as the universal language in the world since it is the only language
that is generally understood across the world including different cultures, nations,
and languages
- Mathematics in the modern world refers to the study of patterns (discernible or
noticeable regularity in the world or in the manmade design) and numbers in
nature and the world of mathematical operations involving statistics, linear
programming and mathematics of investments.
Types of Patterns
1, 2, 4, 7, 11, 16…
a, c, e, g, i…

m, l, j, i, j, f, d, c…
Golden Ratio is the ratio of two consecutive Fibonacci numbers as N becomes large, in
mathematical equation, limit of capital f sub n all over n-1 (golden ratio value =
1.618033988)
Why this is called golden ratio? It is called because majority of the said ratio is prevailing
in the human body.

Dr. Kendra Schmidt asst. professor of Biostatistics uses golden ratio to study the facial sex
appeal. Beauty or six appeal is related to the proportions of facial features which happen to
follow the golden ratio.
First, Dr. Schmid measures the length and width of the face. Then, she divides the length by
the width. The ideal result—as defined by the golden ratio—is roughly 1.6, which means a
beautiful person's face is about 1 1/2 times longer than it is wide.

Examples:
a. The set of all students in SSCTI enrolled in MMW this school year: 2022-2023 is a
well-defined set.
b. The set of all honest students enrolled in MMW is not a well-defined set.
The objects in the set are called elements. Epsilon Greek letter /member of the set
Sets are denoted by capital letters, while the lower letters enclosed in braces usually are the
elements.
Roster method/Tabular method – indicates a set by listing the elements enclosing them in
braces
Rule method/Set Builder Form – where the elements are defined by a particular property
which each element satisfies
