MATHEMATICS IN THE MODERN WORLD

August 15, 2022

Assignment:

1. What is Mathematics?
Mathematics simply means to learn or to study or gain knowledge.
The theories and concepts given in mathematics help us understand and solve
various types of problems in academic as well as in real life situations.

Mathematics is a subject of logic.

Learning mathematics will help students to grow their problem-solving and
logical reasoning skills. Solving mathematical problems is one of the best
brain exercises.

2. How important is mathematics in the modern world?

Math is a strong instrument for global knowledge and communication that organizes
and prevents chaos in our life. It aids in our understanding of the world and is a good
tool for developing mental discipline. Factors like logical and critical thinking,
creative ideas, abstract or spatial intelligence, problem-solving capabilities, and good
business communication skills are all encouraged in math.
- enables us to think analytically
- money management
- GPS system research and development
- you can use math to help you manage your business
- it is the international language

3. Why is math important in our life?

- a powerful tool for global understanding and communication that organizes our
lives and prevents chaos
- helps us understand the world and provides an effective way of building mental
discipline.
- encourages logical reasoning, critical thinking, creative thinking, abstract or
spatial thinking, problem-solving ability, and even effective communication skills.

Mathematics is one of the most important subjects. Mathematics is a subject of

numbers, shapes, data, measurements and also logical activities. It has a huge scope in
every field of our life, such as medicine, engineering, finance, natural science,
economics, etc. We are all surrounded by a mathematical world.

The concepts, theories and formulas that we learn in Math books have huge
applications in real-life. To find the solutions for various problems we need to learn
the formulas and concepts. Therefore, it is important to learn this subject to
understand its various applications and significance.

Lecture Notes

1. What is Mathematics?
- the study of numbers and operations
- a tool collection of skills that helps us answer questions of how many, how much,
and similar questions
- a science of logical reasoning, drawing conclusion from assumed premises, or
strategic reasoning
- the science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combination, and of
space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformation, and
generalizations (lexical definition)
- is recognized as the universal language in the world since it is the only language
that is generally understood across the world including different cultures, nations,
and languages
- Mathematics in the modern world refers to the study of patterns (discernible or
noticeable regularity in the world or in the manmade design) and numbers in
nature and the world of mathematical operations involving statistics, linear
programming and mathematics of investments.

Types of Patterns

a. Fibonacci is a sequence (or series) of numbers where the succeeding number is

obtained by adding the two preceding numbers.

Leonardo Pisano Bigollo – Italian trader

Example: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21… petals of flowers

b. Symmetry comes from a Greek word meaning to measure together and is widely used
in the study of geometry, where half of it is the exact mirror image of the other half.
c. Tessellation refers to patterns that are formed by repeated cubes or tiles
d. Fractals refer to never-ending that repeat indefinitely into smaller scales

2. How important is mathematics in the modern world?

o helps us have better problem-solving skills
Oscar has 20 animals in the farm. It composes chicken and pigs. How many
numbers of chicken and pigs Oscar have if the total number of feet is equal to
56?
number of chickens: 8 8(4) = 32
number of pigs: 12 12(2) = 24
o helps us think analytically (ability to think critically above the world around
us) and have better reasoning abilities

3. Why is math important in our life?

- Learning mathematics is good for your brain. Research conducted by Dr.
Tanya Evans of Stanford University indicates that children who know math are
able to recruit certain brain regions more reliably, and have greater gray matter
volume in those regions, than those who perform more poorly in math.
- Math helps you tell time. Knowing math, and particularly, fractions, can help
you better tell time.
- Mathematics helps you with your finances. Math can be helpful for balancing
your budget because you will have a good understanding of how to make sure that
your costs are less than the money you have.
- Mathematics makes you a better cook.
- Math helps us have better problem-solving skills. Math helps us think
analytically and have better reasoning abilities.
The following are strategies used in solving given problems:
a. use diagram of figure
b. make a table or chart
c. organize a list of information
d. look and observe a pattern
e. apply working backwards principle
f. modify to simpler form
g. apply trial and error method/guess and check
h. use common sense or logical reasoning
i. transform the expressions to mathematical equation
j. apply simulation/experiment
k. apply ratio and proportion
l. apply Venn diagram
- Practically, every career uses math in some way. Obviously, mathematicians
and scientists rely on mathematical principles to do the most basic aspects of their
work such as hypotheses testing.
- Math is all around us and helps us understand the world better. Learning and
appreciating math can help you appreciate things that you would not otherwise
notice about the world.
- Math can make you popular.
- Math can help you shop for a good sale. Knowledge of percentages and how to
calculate them quickly can help you save time when shopping at a sale at the mall
– for example, to quickly calculate a discounted price, or to determine whether
you’ve been correctly charged when paying for a shirt at the store.
- Math is the universal language. Sure, it is mostly equations, numbers, and some
Greek letters, but math is understood the same virtually all over the world.

Golden Ratio is the ratio of two consecutive Fibonacci numbers as N becomes large, in
mathematical equation, limit of capital f sub n all over n-1 (golden ratio value =
1.618033988)

Why this is called golden ratio? It is called because majority of the said ratio is prevailing
in the human body.

a. length of the arm and the height

b. distance of the fingertips to the elbow
c. person’s height to the height to his/her navel
d. length of the forearm and the hand

https://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/measuring-facial-perfection-the-golden-ratio

Dr. Kendra Schmidt asst. professor of Biostatistics uses golden ratio to study the facial sex
appeal. Beauty or six appeal is related to the proportions of facial features which happen to
follow the golden ratio.

First, Dr. Schmid measures the length and width of the face. Then, she divides the length by
the width. The ideal result—as defined by the golden ratio—is roughly 1.6, which means a
beautiful person's face is about 1 1/2 times longer than it is wide.

Expression vs Sentences in Mathematics

A mathematical sentence states a complete thought in the English language and ordinary
sentence must contain a subject and a predicate.

Examples:

Mathematical expression is a name given to a mathematical object of interest.

Examples:

Sets and Basic Concepts

A set is an undefined term. It is an intuitive concept but in the study of mathematics5, we

describe a set as a collection of well-defined distinct objects. Well-defined means that the
criteria of membership in a set are adequate to describe whether or not any given object
belongs to the set.

a. The set of all students in SSCTI enrolled in MMW this school year: 2022-2023 is a
well-defined set.
b. The set of all honest students enrolled in MMW is not a well-defined set.

The objects in the set are called elements. Epsilon Greek letter /member of the set

Sets are denoted by capital letters, while the lower letters enclosed in braces usually are the
elements.

Methods of Describing the Set

Roster method/Tabular method – indicates a set by listing the elements enclosing them in
braces

Rule method/Set Builder Form – where the elements are defined by a particular property
which each element satisfies

Set Classification

The set can be classified into:

1. Finite Set – if it possible to write down a complete list of all elements

2. Infinite Set – if it is not possible to write down a complete list of elements of the set.
A set with no element is an empty set denoted by {} null set.
Single tone set/unit set

A set is a subset of a given set.

It is the given set.

It is the empty set.

Each member of the set is also an element of the given set.
