MICROSCOPE

The document provides information about the parts of a compound microscope and their functions. It includes a table labeling the parts of the microscope and describing their classifications as mechanical, magnifying, or illuminating. Proper techniques for handling and caring for the microscope are described, such as holding it with both hands and cleaning lenses with lens paper. The document explains that magnification is the degree to which an image is enlarged and discusses why the coarse adjustment knob should not be used with high power objectives. Total magnification is calculated by multiplying the objective and ocular magnifications.

Parts Descriptions and Functions Classification

(Mechanical, Magnifying,
Illuminating)

This part of the microscope is used to look Magnifying

Eyepiece or Ocular through the microscope and examine the
specimen using the lenses that magnifies the
object so that it can be seen through the naked
eye. The standard and most commonly used
magnification of eyepiece is 10X.

the body tube separates the objectives and the Mechanical

Body Tube eyepiece

The arm acts as a bridge that attaches the base to Mechanical

Arm the head and the eyepiece tube to the base. The
function of the arm is to act as a handle of our
one hand when we need to carry the microscope.
It also acts as a pillar to the head of the
microscope.
scanner or scanning objective lens is a type of Magnifying
Scanner lens that gives the lowest magnification power. It
is suitable enough for viewing the conspectus of
a whole slide.
This type of objective covers large area and is Magnifying
Low Power Objective very useful when used to examine large
specimens and it is also helpful when aligning
the microscope. The total magnification of low
power objective is 100x.

It is best suited for viewing finer details in a Magnifying

High Power Objective specimen sample. Its total magnification is 400x.

This type of objective gives the highest Magnifying

Oil Immersion Objective magnification. It is a specifically designed
objective that can be used to increase the
resolution of the microscope. You can achieve it
by immersing the specimen and the lens in a
transparent oil of high refractive index. Its total
magnification is 1000x.

It holds the specimen slides in order to make it Mechanical

Stage Clip immovable.

It is where the specimen is placed for us to Mechanical

Stage observe in the microscope.

We can find the illuminator at the base of the Illuminating

Illuminator microscope and it is the microscope’s light
source.
The iris diaphragm is used to tune the amount of Illuminating
Iris Diaphragm light which passes through the condenser and
then to the specimen.
Holds more objective lenses and used to revolve Mechanical
Revolving Nosepiece the objective lenses to change the magnification
power.

a high-speed control knob that is used to Mechanical

Coarse Adjustment Knob quickly focus by adjusting the objective lens or
stage up and down.
a slow-moving control knob that is used to focus Mechanical
Fine Adjustment Knob on the specimen more clearly. It is usually used
for focusing when using high powered lenses.
it acts as the support of the microscope and is Mechanical
Base used to hold the microscope when it is needed to
be transported.
3. Answer the questions
a. Explain the proper technique on how to handle, and care the compound
microscope.
The proper technique on how to handle the compound microscope is that when carrying the microscope, we always need to
remember that it is necessary to hold the microscope with both of our hands. Grip the arm of the microscope with one hand and
lift the scope while the other hand is under the base of the microscope to provide support. Always keep in mind that your hand
shouldn’t touch the lens since it might scratch the glass. As for placing it on the table, make sure that the table is clear and flat
then make sure to place the microscope in the middle to avoid sudden fall. After using the microscope, it is important to clean it
immediately after use to avoid the risk of spreading germs and viruses. Before cleaning, turn off or set the microscope first to
the lowest magnification setting. Afterwards, clean all the surfaces using a compressed air and if possible, wipe the tube, arm,
stage, and base using a damp cloth. When cleaning the lenses, use a lens cleaning solution and lens cleaning paper and start
wiping from the center to the side in a circular motion. After cleaning, don’t forget to wrap the cords and always cover it with a
microscope cover and carry it with care and put it in a storage area that can protect the microscope from direct sunlight.

b. The degree to which the image of a specimen is enlarged by a microscope is

termed as
Magnification

c. Explain why you should not use the coarse adjustment knob for focusing when
the high power objective or oil immersion objective are being used?
It is not appropriate to utilize the force adjustment knob for focusing when
the higher power objective or oil immersion objective due to the fact that if
you focus the high power objectives with the coarse focus knob you risk
slamming the objective into the slide it can result to the damage to both
objective.

d. The magnification of the scanner is 4X, Ocular lens and Low power objective are
10X, the High power objective is 40X, and the Oil immersion objective is 100X.
What would be the total magnification of each of the lenses?

Magnification Ocular lens Total Magnification

Scanning 4x 10x 40x

Low power 10x 10x 100x

High power 40x 10x 400x

Oil Immersion 100x 10x 1000x

The appearance of letter ë in low power objective is smaller since low power
objective gives a wider field of view of the slide resulting to a smaller image
of the specimen, while in the high power objective, the letter ë is much more
larger since high power objective zooms the lens resulting to narrower view
of the overall slide but gives a bigger view of the specimen

Is the process of enlarging the apparent size and physical size, of

something

In a compound microscope the total magnification is the

product of the objective and ocular lenses.

Is the ability to distinguish two objects from each other

When one objectives lens is in focus, then the other

objectives will also be focus

Is a measure of its ability to gather light and resolve

fine specimen details at a fixed object distance.
