Architecture

This document provides information about employment and employability in architecture. It discusses the status of employment in the field locally and globally. Specifically: 1) Employment of architects is projected to grow slower than average but they will be needed for construction, renovation, and green building projects. 2) Most survey respondents were employed locally in Ilocos Sur but many also found work in Manila and overseas. 3) Competition is high for architecture jobs in the Philippines, especially in urban areas where many universities train graduates. Understanding green design trends can improve employment prospects.

WHAT
IS
ARCHITECTURE?

Architecture is art, passion, history and

everything. It is everywhere, from a simple
chair, table, garden, to a bridge, buildings,
and infrastructure.

Architecture is everywhere. Each and every

building: home, school, office, hospital and
supermarket were designed for their
particular purpose. It is of vital importance
that these buildings, and in turn the
environments they form and the
neighborhoods and cities they are a part of,
are designed to be the best possible
buildings for their specific context, use and
the people who use them. ("What is
architecture?" n.d., para. 1)

The architecture of the
Philippines (Filipino: Arkitekturang
Pilipino, Spanish: Arquitectura Filipina) is a
reflection of the country's historical and
cultural heritage. Most prominent historic
structures in the archipelago are based on a
mix of indigenous
Austronesian, Chinese, Malay, American,
and Spanish influences.

WHAT
IS
ARCHITECTURE?

The Bachelor of Science in Architecture

(BS Architecture) is a five-year degree
program in the Philippines that is
concerned with the design and the
planning of architectural structures such
as residential and commercial buildings,
roads, dams tunnels, bridge, and the like.

By studying Architecture, you will not

only learn how to design buildings that
are pleasing to the eyes, you will also
learn how to plan structures and facilities
that are functional, cost-effective, flexible
to change, and most importantly,
resilient against natural and man-made
disasters.

There are 7 common types of architects.

First, residential architects, is for clients
who want to have a customized house.
Second, commercial architects are about
a successful design of a commercial or
public building is highly dependent on a
flowing and self-guiding circulation that
optimize the experience for the building
users. For example, a well-designed
shopping mall lets the buyers find their
way and get what they need easily,
without getting lost or walking more
than they should. Third, Interior Design is
about designing and styling the interior
of an apartment, an office, or a restaurant
requires artistic sense and technical
knowledge.

continuously work on innovating effective
green design methods that leave a
minimal impact on the environment.
Fifth, Landscape architects, is concerned
with outdoor spaces like parks, gardens,
neighborhoods, campuses, and public
spaces. Sixth, urban designer, a broad
subject that employs other
specializations like building
architecture, landscape design, and
green design. Lastly, Industrial architect,
they fully understand the different
industrial processes, and accordingly,
design efficient and functional buildings
that can hold them.

Architecture, just like the other jobs, also

have pros and cons. Here are the
following cons, you will go through a lot
of training, you will work for long hours,
you´ll never be rich, you're not
guaranteed a job when you graduated,
the responsibility can cause anxiety.
There a lot of cons there but here are the
following pros to counteract those cons,
youŕe making a difference, you won get
bored, architecture is a passion, you will
learn a lot about design.

SUMMARY

ARCHITECTURE IS A 5 YEARS COURSE,  PREPARATION &

THERE ARE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS OR
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE TO ACQUIRE TRAINING
THIS JOB BUT ATTENDING SEMINARS
WOULD DEFINITELY BE AN ADVANTAGE,

ARCHITECTURE ONLY SUITS THOSE WHO

SERIOUSLY LOVE THIS JOB. YOUR BENEFITS
SALARY WON'T MAKE YOU RICH, BUT
YOUR PASSION AND THE JOY OF SEEING (STRENGTHS &
YOUR WORK BEING APPRECIATED BY
ANYONE WOULD BE THE GREATEST
OPPORTUNITIES)
TREASURE INSTEAD OF MONEY.
SOMETIMES YOU JUST WOULD'NT CARE
ABOUT YOUR SALARY WHEN YOU REALLY
ENJOY THIS JOB.

SLEEPLESS NIGHTS, PRESSURE,
DIMINISHING HEALTH. THOSE ARE THE CHALLENGES
COMMON HEALTH RISK OF THIS JOB. YOU
WOULD ALSO NEED A GREAT TIME (WEAKNESS &
MANAGEMENT TO BALANCE WORK AND THREATS)
YOUR PRIVATE LIFE. ARCHITECTURE
WOULD GIVE YOU A LOT OF REASONS TO
QUIT THIS JOB BUT YOUR LOVE AND
PASSION WOULD SURPASS THEM ALL
PAGE 46
SUMMARY

THERE ARE A LOT OF SKILLS NEEDED, SKILLS &

ESPECIALLY TECHNOLOGY IS GREATLY
IMPROVING AS YEARS GO BY. BUT THE MOST VALUES
NECESSARY SKILL IS TO IMPROVE SOFTWARE
SKILLS (ADOBE, AUTOCAD) AS IT WOULD BE
A GREAT EDGE IN THIS COMPETITIVE
INDUSTRY. HARDWORK WOULD PLAY A BIG
PART.

ONCE YOU ENTER ARCHITECTURE YOU

VIEW IN LIFE WOULD CHANGE. WHEN EXPERIENCES
ENTERING A HOUSE OR CAFE, THE VERY
FIRST THING YOU WOULD DO IS & BELIEF
APPRECIATE AND THINK OF A PLAN TO
IMPROVE SOMETHING. IT WOULD BE
VERY FUN BUT IT'S NOT WHEN IT COMES
TO MANAGING WORK AND PERSONAL
LIFE.

THERE ARE NO SPECIFIC

REQUIREMENTS TO GET THIS JOB ASIDE REQUIREMENTS
FROM HANDING A RESUME'. BUT
ATTENDING SEMINAR AND PRACTICING
YOUR SOFTWARE SKILL COULD HELP YOU
TAKE A LEAD.

PAGE 47
SUMMARY

ARCHITECTURE IS A TOUGH JOB. YOU'LL RESPONSIBILITIES

HAVE TONS OF PEOPLE RELYING ON YOU.
TOO MUCH RESPONSIBILITIES ON OTHERS
BUT THE RESPONSIBILITY THAT YOU SHOULD
TAKE PRIORITY IS YOURSELF BECAUSE
THERE WOULD BE DAYS WHEN YOU'LL HAVE
NO SLEEP AT ALL, AND SOME TIMES WHEN
YOU'LL HAVE NO TIME FOR YOU FAMILY AND
YOURSELF

TAKE YOUR STUDIES SERIOUSLY

BECAUSE HARDWORKS ARE ALWAYS ADVICES
RETURN THRICE IN THE FUTURE. NEVER
GIVE UP ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU KNOW
THAT THIS IS REALLY YOUR PASSION.YOU
CHOSE THIS, YOU LOVE THIS, SO WORK
FOR IT AND ACHIEVE IT.

THERE WERE A LOT OF FAILED

EXPECTATIONS BUT IT DOESN'T REALLY THINGS LEARNED
MATTER BECAUSE THE MOST IMPORTANT
PART IS THIS IS OUR PASSION. WE
DREAM FOR IT SO WE' LL WORK FOR IT.
NOTHING WOULD ALWAYS GO YOUR WAY
BUT MAYBE ALONG THE ROAD WE'LL
SOON FIND THE BEST THING AND REACH
THE END SUCCESSFULLY.
