How To Teach Accounting To High School Students

The following are Tips on teaching accounting in secondary schools or colleges. These tips should never
be underestimated because non-compliance can lead to a disastrous outing.

1. Every chapter is new and different from the previous chapter

So before starting any new topic or any chapter, study all the contents of chapter carefully to equip
yourself of basic knowledge of the new chapter before entering into the classroom.

2. Start a new chapter with fundamental theory or background of the topic

Don't try to skip theory and go straight to practical because some average or slow learning students can
not follow all practical without understanding the theory aspect of the topic first. For example, a teacher
who wants to teach balance sheet should first define balance sheet, explain the meaning of assets and
liabilities before going to the practical aspect. Going straight to practical might make it difficult for the
students to understand the entire topic.

3. Do not be too bookish

Try some practical example of accounting from our day-to-day life and your market business's
accounting (trading, profit and loss account) or your country's companies accounting. Furthermore,
teach what the students can relate with. Don't teach too much theories, unless you want the students to
dislike the practical aspect.

6. Often see the interest and suitability of your students before continuance in your topic and try
to link your topic with the interest of students. Because the students won't forget those topics
learnt under their interest in their whole life.
5. Give the students some tasks to do

After solving some practical question in the classroom, give the students some questions to try on their
own in the class. Watch them very closely so they don't copy from their peers in class. Also give them
some take home tasks so they can check what they learnt in the class. Those take home tasks should
also the reviewed the next time the students have accounting so they can do corrections in areas they
got wrong.

This character is mainly exhibited by accounting teachers and other subjects involving calculation. I
came across some accounting teachers who abandoned all difficult problems in accounting subject just
because they don't understand it. Or they will give it to the students as homework. Dear accounting
teachers, as a teacher, it doesn't means you are an expert or a genius in accounting, you are also a
student. So as a student, you must learn everyday. You can also enroll in tutorials, seminars etc so you
can learn more.
